DC POWER SOLUTIONS FOR OFF-GRID AND POOR GRID SITES

The Global Energy Challenge

The global need for energy continues to rise and along with it, so does our dependence on fossil fuels. Being a finite resource and often difficult to acquire, we have seen the price of energy derived from fossil fuels sky-rocket in recent year. Worse still, it is now widely accepted that the CO2 released from burning fossil fuels is having a growing negative environmental effect on our planet. We all have a shared responsibility to reduce energy usage by being more conscientious and energy efficient. At Eltek Valere we take this responsibility seriously, which is why we are leading the green revolution within the Telecom power industry.

The impact from the Telecom Industry

The continuously expanding global telecom industry is a significant and rapidly growing consumer of energy: > > > > Global telecom networks consume more than 1% of the total global energy consumption This is equivalent to more than 160 Billion kWh per year This results in the emission of over 200 Million tons of CO2 The annual cost to carriers and their customers is more that $20 Billon

Eltek Valeres Solution

In 2008, Eltek Valere took a quantum leap forward in terms of energy efficiency with the commercial launch of the Flatpack2 HE (high efficiency) rectifier. This was the first ever rectifier with an independently certified efficiency of more than 96,4 %. This level then became the industry benchmark; effectively reducing the conversion power loss by a minimum of 50 % compared to the previous level. Now, by utilizing the HE technology, we have released the Flatpack2 HE Solar Charger; providing full functionality and high efficiency to solar powered telecom sites

The telecom consumption in perspective:

> 160 Billion kWh per year is more than the total power demand of countries like Norway or Sweden Its enough to power 16 million homes for one year The CO2 emissions produced is equal to the exhaust from 22 million cars during one year

> >

THERE IS A SUBSTANTIAL ECONOMIC COST

> Energy is a significant portion of operating expense:
Power consumption is now one of the top three network operating expenses for carriers (ABI Research)

> Broadband is driving power consumption upwards:

In 2004, NTT projected it would require 1.5 times its current energy usage to support the widespread deployment of always-on broadband connections by 2010 (NTT Group Environmental Protection Activity Report 2004)

THE BENEFITS OF SOLAR POWER

> Free Energy from the Sun

Sunlight is a constant, continual power source providing 89 Petawatts (89 x10 15 W) of free power onto the earths surface

> Renewable Energy

With todays technology, converting solar energy into usable DC power is considered renewable and a true green power source

> Replaces Fossil Fuels

Tapping into this boundless energy will help reduce the dependency on fossil fuels.

> Environmental Friendly

There are no pollutants or harmful by-products created during the solar conversion process.

> Long Life

A well installed solar array can have an operation life of between 30 and 40 years.

> Short CAPEX payback time

There is virtually no operational or maintenance costs involved in generating solar power. That means CAPEX payback times can be as short as 2 years, depending on site.

> Financial Incentives

Many regions have renewable energy initiative programs and tax benefits.

Eltek Valere Solar Hybrid Solution

Suitable for autonomous operation (solar only) or in conjunction with an AC source ensuring maximum operation and efficiency.

Autonomous Solar Solution

The Flatpack2 HE Solar Solution is the ideal choice for telecom sites that need an autonomous power solution. Based on HE (High Efficiency) technology, the Eltek Valere Solar Charger maximizes the power transfer with a > 96% operating efficiency, combined with an effective MPPT program. The charger also provides full galvanic isolation between solar panels and the telecom equipment/ batteries, thus providing a high level of surge protection and reliability.

Solar Hybrid Solution

The Eltek Valere HE Solar Charger is part of the Flatpack 2 family, thus can be fully integrated with Flatpack 2 HE rectifiers to provide a complete Solar Hybrid solution. The complete site is monitored with the Eltek Valere Smartpack controller, which provides remotely monitored and controlled, ensuring maximum operation and efficiency. The Smartpack features also include advance battery monitoring routines, as well as gen-set optimisation programs and considerable data logging options.

Maximize your Solar Investment

The energy from sunlight is free, however you should expect to get the maximum power return on your Solar Power investment. Eltek Valere Solar solutions make sure you get the most out of the solar power available by including :

> Greater than 96% operating efficiency

Based on HE technology, the Solar charger Has the smallest power conversion loss in the market today, whilst offering full galvanic isolation.

> Full Monitoring and Control

With the fully integrated Smartpack controller, the entire site can be remotely monitored and controlled. Advanced data logging options are also available.

> Maximum Power Point Tracking

The Eltek Valere HE Solar Charger adjusts its input to match the changing characteristics of the Solar Panels to ensure near 100% power transfer through-out the day.

> Sun Tracking

By adding on Solar Tracking hardware, your solar panels will track the sun during the day. This option can provide up to 40% more energy than a fixed panel installation.

Solar Hybrid Building Blocks

It is the advanced system building blocks that makes the Eltek Valere Solar Hybrid solution stand out.

FLATPACK2 HE SOLAR CHARGER > 96 % power conversion efficiency

> Advanced Max Power Point Tracking routines > Provides full galvanic isolation > Wide operating DC input range

FLATPACK2 HE RECTIFIER > 96 % power conversion efficiency

> High power density > Wide operating AC input range > Low noise operation > Wide operating temperature range

SMARTPACK CONTROLLER
> Advanced Battery monitoring routines > Gen-set optimization programs > Remote site monitoring and control options > Configurable data logging options > Password protection and site cloning features

Save OPEX via Gen-set Optimization

Running a Gen-set continuously to keep batteries charged is expensive. Not only is the Gen-set constantly using diesel, it will probably be running on a low capacity load, thus being very inefficient per litre.

Standard Efficiency to Constant Load EV Hybrid to Optimized Gen-set

In addition, there are other OPEX cost factor to consider, such as : > > > Cost to re-supply the fuel More frequent Gen-set maintenance and replacement program Possibility of fuel theft

And of course, the continuous negative environmental impact that running diesel Gen-sets cause.

Batteries instead of Gen-Set

You can reduce your OPEX cost and your environmental impact by reducing how long you run your Gen-set and instead, use some of the stored energy in the batteries. One of the standard features in the Eltek Valere Smartpack controller is the option for the user to define when the Gen-set should be running. This can be based on system float voltage or time of day (or month).

60 % less exhaust emission

Not only do you get a fuel saving by only running the Gen-set when the batteries need charging, but you also will be running the gen-set at a higher load, thus getting more usable power per litre. And with the possibility of reducing the Gen-set operating time by up to 60%, that would mean 60% less emissions exhausted into the environment.
