The AREMA Educational Foundation Scholarship Program continues to grow each year with generous donations which allow the Foundation to award scholarships to deserving applicants. The Scholarship Review Committee, a sub-committee of AREMA Committee 24 - Education and Training, determines which scholarship(s) should be awarded to which applicant and works to select only the most qualified railway-focused engineering students.

In addition to the Scholarship Program the Foundation also supports other educational and training endeavors including Student Chapters and the Railroad Engineering Education Symposium (REES). AREMA Student Chapters have been established at the following three Universities: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Railroad Engineering and Activities Club (REAC) at Michigan Technological University and Oregon State University. The Railroad Engineering Education Symposium was first developed in 2008 by AREMA Committee 24, Education and Training. The second REES Event was held in June 2010. The overall objective of REES is to provide engineering educators with material to be incorporated into their courses and curriculum as an important first step in expanding the opportunities for railway engineering and transportation education in North America.
The proceeds of the AREMA Educational Foundation Golf Tournament will fund several scholarships for the 2011 fiscal year.

Scholarships provided by the AREMA Educational Foundation are some of the most effective ways to encourage students to consider the rail industry as a career. It has been exciting to see the increasing level of scholarships, as it really demonstrates the importance and commitment placed by the industry in securing the best talent as future railroad managers and experts. For students, the potential to apply for AREMA scholarships extends beyond financial aspects. It motivates them to deepen their understanding of the industry and to take that extra step that lifts their skills to another level. Therefore, I consider these scholarships extremely important for our program and our students and I encourage anyone, who wants to develop new railroad professionals and improve railroad engineering education, to consider a donation to the AREMA Educational Foundation. Pasi Lautala, Ph.D., P.E. Research Assistant Professor Director, Rail Transportation Program Michigan Technological University
Graduating with a degree in civil engineering is only the beginning of what I believe will be a long, rewarding career in the railroad industry. As a recent graduate, it is all too apparent that this field is overlooked by my peers. The civil engineering profession requires continuous development of knowledge and skills to better the life for all Americans, the support that Committee 24 and AREMA offers upholds this belief. Owen Smith Recipient of the New York Central Memorial Scholarship - 2009 University of Delaware Graduate
