OBJECTIVES:After studying this unit the student should be able to, 1) Define the term education. 2) Explain the etymological meaning of education. 3) State Indian and Western interpretations of education. 4) Differentiate between narrow and modern meaning of education. 5) Explain the salient features/characteristics of education. METHODOLOGY:1) Seeking students opinion through a questionnaire. 2) Discussion 3) Lecture CONCEPT OF EDUCATION: Introduction: The term education in the broad sense is not only a pedagogical one punctuating down to the basic meaning of the term, it means to plunge a mans body, mind and soul of ignorance . It enhances an individuals personality and provides him confidence to reach out to the world. ETYMOLOGICAL MEANING: -- Latin Origin a) Educare- to nourish b) Educure- to lead forth c) Educatum- act of teaching Sanskrit Origin- a) Skis shah:To discipline b) Vidhya :- vidh To know What is not education? 1) Becoming only literate is not education. 2) Getting a degree is not education. 3) Gaining knowledge. 4) Learning new skills.

1) Interpretations of education: Indian Interpretations: Tagore Enabling the mind to find out the ultimate truth which emancipates us from the bondage of dust. Gandhiji- All round development and drawing out the best in the child mind, body and spirit. Swami Dayanand Saraswati- Education is a process beginning right from the mothers womb. Conclusion:- So the Indian interpreters stressed on human capacities i.e. mental, moral, social, physical and intellectual. Western Interpretations: Aristotle : Creation of sound mind in sound body. John Dewey: The development of all the activities in the individual enabling him to control his environment. G.S.Thompson: Influence of the environment on the individual to bring a permanent change in habits and behaviour. Conclusion: The western interpreters stressed on the growth and development of the individual in relation to his environment. Narrow concept: Education is confined only to a few specific deliberate, planned, influences which have a bearing on the development of the child. Modern concept: There is a shift in the emphasis on national development from individual development. Education is not only an instrument of social change but viewed as an investment in the national development. Great educational revolutions achieve great economic evaluations. Features of education: 1) Life long process:- Process of development from infancy to maturity. 2) Bipolar process :- Interplay of educator and educand. 3)Tripolar process :Interplay of educator, educand and social process. 4) A deliberate process:- The educator is aware of his aim. 5) Preserver and Transmitter of heritage: - The cultural heritage is transmitted from generation to generation. 6) It is progressive: - Changes according to the needs and demands of the society.
