Slim Phatty Users Manual Addendum OS v3.

Nov. 22, 2010

Slim Phatty Operating System firmware version 3.03 Slim Phatty analog synthesizer modules shipping starting at serial #171 are shipped with version 3.03 firmware. The following information was omitted or changed from that in the manual, as the specifications have changed. ARPEGGIATOR The Arpeggiator has been changed to improve its functionality. For the Arpeggiator to be used, it must be enabled in a preset. All factory presets have the Arpeggiator enabled except for the CA CALIBRATION preset. MASTER ARPEGGIATOR SETUP MENU The MASTER menu now has a new menu page, ARP SETUP. This menu contains the following options: MODE, CLOCK, SEND MIDI, SEND CLOCK. MODE: (INTERNAL, MIDI CLOCK). This is a Global setting for the Arpeggiator Clock Source. Move the cursor to the bottom line and then move the cursor again to select INTERNAL or MIDI CLOCK with the Value knob. The Internal Clock is the arpeggiators own internal clock, separate from the LFOs internal clock. In the Advanced Preset/ Arpeggiator Menu (p40), the Clock source [CLK SRC] selections have been changed: the clock source can be GLOBAL, INT (Internal Clock), or MIDI (MIDI Clock). This way you can override the Global clock settings on an individual preset. The Factory Presets have GLOBAL selected in each preset. CLOCK: (15 possible settings). This is the Clock divider selected for the current Preset. Move the cursor under the rhythmic division and select the desired division with the Value knob. Although you can edit the clock divider here on the Master menu for convenience, note that the Clock divider is saved per preset. SEND MIDI: (OFF, ON) -- This option enables the arpeggiator to output MIDI notes corresponding to the arpeggio pattern that is playing. If set to OFF, no MIDI notes are sent from the arpeggiator. SEND CLOCK: (OFF, ON). If ON, and if the arpeggiator Mode is INTERNAL (using the Internal clock), the arpeggiator will send MIDI Clock messages synchronized to its own Internal clock rate. This is useful if you want to synchronize another piece of gear such as the MIDI MuRF to the arpeggiator's internal clock, for situations where you don't have a separate master MIDI clock synchronizing all your gear. ACTIVATING THE ARPEGGIATOR, ADJUSTING RATE (p52) To turn the Arpeggiator on and off, the Value knob push switch is used. If the Arpeggiator Clock Source is set to INTERNAL, when the Arpeggiator is first turned on the cursor is automatically moved to the Arpeggiator rate value on the second line of the LCD. When the cursor is under the Arpeggiator value, and the LFO Rate parameter is selected in the MOD section, then the Modulation knob controls the Arpeggiator rate value. Note that with the cursor under the Arpeggiator rate value, the Value knob also changes the Arpeggiator Rate. Moving the cursor to the current preset number does two things. First, if the LFO Rate parameter is selected in the MOD section, the Modulation Pot only changes the LFO Rate. This is how the LFO Rate parameter can be edited while the Arpeggiator is running. Second, changing the value knob will change the preset number, while the Arpeggiator is running. The Arpeggiator will update to the new presets values for its parameters. Note that if the Arpeggiator is ON and a preset is loaded with the Arpeggiator enable parameter OFF, the Arpeggiator will be turned OFF.

Slim Phatty Users Manual Addendum OS v3.03 (317)

Nov. 22, 2010 ADDITIONAL CHANGES TO ARPEGGIATOR BEHAVIOR When the arpeggiator is ON (running), you can change presets and the arpeggiator will continue to run. If the Arpeggiator Clock is set to INTERNAL and you change presets while the arpeggiator is running, the arpeggiator Rate will stay the same -- that is to say, any saved arpeggiator rate in the new (changed-to) preset will not be loaded to the arpeggiator, although the other arpeggiator settings (Order, Pattern, Octaves) from the new preset will be loaded. If you change presets while the arpeggiator is OFF and you then turn on the arpeggiator, the saved Rate value will be loaded along with all the other arpeggiator parameters. If the arpeggiator is in Latch mode but no notes are playing, the arpeggiator will synchronize to the exact moment you first press a key (or if in MIDI sync, to the first MIDI-clock message that is received after you press a key). This synchronization will persist for as long as Latch is turned on, regardless of when you physically play the notes after this point. To re-synchronize the pattern to a new downbeat, turn Latch off and then back on again. When the arpeggiator is on but NOT in Latch mode, any time you release all keys and play a new note, the arpeggiator will re-sync to the instant you play the first note. As long as you continue to hold any notes (that is, as long as there's no point at which no notes are playing), this synchronization will persist, but unlike Latch mode it will re-sync any time all keys are released. If the Arpeggiator is in Latch mode and synchronized to MIDI clock, if the clock is stopped, the arpeggiator will stop playing. If the clock is Resumed (MIDI Continue message), the arpeggiator will continue playing the latched pattern from the moment it left off, without resetting to the beginning of the pattern. If the clock is Restarted (MIDI Start message), then the arpeggiator will play the latched pattern from the beginning of the pattern again.

MIDI SETUP The MASTER menu MIDI SETUP page has two new options, SEND VOL CC7 and SEND 14BIT. SEND VOL CC7 enables or disables sending MIDI CC7 when the Master Volume knob is adjusted. This CC number is used by all of the Phatty and Voyager synths to control master volume, but it is also used as a volume control by a number of software synths and DAW applications. This can create a conflict if you're using the Phatty as a MIDI controller and you want to adjust the Phatty volume without affecting the volume of anything further down the MIDI stream. When SEND VOL CC7 is OFF, no MIDI is transmitted when you adjust the Phatty volume knob. SEND 14BIT enables or disables sending MIDI continuous controls at 14-bit resolution. This is OFF by default, in which case only the standard 7-bit data is sent (a single CC per parameter, with a value of 0 to 127). When SEND 14BIT is ON, the relevant parameters will all send 14 bits of data, using an additional MIDI CC to represent 128 finer increments in between each step of the primary CC value (for a total of 16,384 steps of resolution instead of a mere 128). The relevant parameters are all of the continuous, voltage-controlled analog parameters in the Phatty sound engine, such as filter cutoff and resonance, oscillator waveform and frequency, lfo rate and mod amount, or any of the envelope time parameters. In short, any parameter which is assigned a CC number in the range of 1 to 31 will send 14-bit CC data when SEND 14BIT is ON. All of these parameters now respond to incoming 14-bit CC data at all times, regardless of the SEND 14BIT state (which affects only outgoing MIDI resolution).
