WHAT IS enerVista.com?
enerVista.com is a suite of integrated services delivered over the Internet with the goal of providing the tools for total enterprise management. Services include eScada, eReporter, eExpert, eLibrary, and eEngineer. enerVista.com may be used as a compliment to an existing system or serve as a cost-effective solution where implementation costs had previously been too high. The service is provided through a leased model that requires little capital expense and can be supported through the operations and maintenance budget. As a leased service, all services are under perpetual warranty with IT support and upgrades provided at no additional cost. to enerVista.com and the entire Internet by simply plugging into the eBox. Monitoring capability can be expanded by adding additional Universal Relays. If the protective relays on the site are Internet-ready, as are the Universal Relays, plugging them into the eBox makes them available over the Internet.

SECURITY
As an application that utilizes the Internet as a medium, security of data and information is a valid concern. In addition to passcode authentication on the eBox, data from the eBox to the GE servers is protected within a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN security appliances encrypt the data to create a virtual tunnel between the eBox and the GE servers. These devices also have firewall software that is updated regularly by the GE servers to prevent viruses and outside attacks on the data. This is similar to anti-virus software that is used for PCs and corporate networks. From the GE servers to the users browser, Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption and authentication is used to ensure that data is secure. All data stored on the GE servers is backed up regularly and treated as confidential. If the service is terminated all data will be returned to the user upon request.
Through the use of SSL, firewalls, and VPN, enerVista.com ensures the security of the data.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

As an Application Service Provider (ASP), GE hosts the enerVista.com application software on servers that are accessible through the Internet. A user simply logs on to the server and accesses their account. Many of the enerVista.com services will function without any additional infrastructure but the real value of enerVista.com is realized when substations are connected via the eBox. When an eBox is wired into each substation, it will collect up to 48 digital inputs (from protective relays, diagnostic monitoring devices, security systems, etc.) and meter up to 5 circuits. The eBox is then connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The connection to the ISP can be a traditional phone line/modem, a DSL, cable, or a wireless connection. This connection to the ISP now completes the system. The GE servers maintain secure connections with all eBoxes at all substations and data gathered is accessible anywhere, anytime through the Internet. The server monitors all substations 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It can serve as an automated dispatch center, generating phone, page, and/or e-mail messages when an alarm condition occurs.
The eBox supports a number of extensions such as webcams, additional protection, and local computer access for enhanced functionality.

The eBox is a weatherproof enclosure that houses a Universal Relay, heater, air conditioner (outdoor option), Internet security appliance, and modem (if not provided by the ISP). With four Ethernet ports, the eBox can serve as an Internet receptacle at the substation. While on site, employees have access

COMPLIMENTARY APPLICATIONS OF enerVista.com
Disaster Recovery/Backup
Many Scada systems are susceptible to a single point of failure. Damage to the trunk cable that connects the control center to the telephone company could cripple the Scada system. A natural disaster or state of emergency could require evacuation of the control center leaving the Scada unattended and unmonitored. A more severe incident might require that the entire system be re-built. Using alternate communications paths from the substation to the Internet, an operational contingency system could be set up anywhere, immediately. Operational contingency systems can be cost-effectively configured with enerVista.com. During severe weather, activity in the control room can be at a fever pitch with outages occuring in rapid succession. With enerVista.com, the operations supervisor could access the status of the distrubution system remotely to assess the situation when the control room is inaccessible.
Alternate communication paths can be cost-effectively configured with enerVista.com for disaster recovery situations.

C&I Customer Retention

Large Commercial and Industrial (C&I) customers consume large quantities of energy for their loads. In the deregulated market, C&I customers will look not only for reliable power, and lower cost, but also for power quality data and power delivery process of the supplier. By placing an e-BOX at C&I customer substation, enerVista.com can not only provide power quality data, but allow the sharing of utility information through the entire power delivery process with the C&I customer. This would permit access to utility network status and power quality information by C&I customers on a proactive basis.

Services as a Source of Revenue

Although enerVista.com was originally conceived for small utilities that lacked station monitoring, for a low additional fee, operations with experienced professionals can contract out monitoring services to other utilities that are not necessarily within their geographic proximity. Using the anywhere access capability of enerVista.com, resourceful utilities could collaborate and work with smaller ones to diagnose and assist in troubleshooting for profit.

Feasibility Assessment and Pilot Projects

The leasing model of eBoxes combined with enerVista.com services creates a new model of Scada-for-rent This may be . useful for feasibility studies prior to making a large capital investment. Pilot projects such as fuel cell generation may take advantage of the anywhere access and 24/7 monitoring. The E-mail and phone notification can signal anomalous conditions and vendors, consultants, and customers can all monitor the sites from different locales. Reports can be created on-line with the eReporter database. Troubleshooting a longstanding problem at a remote location is made financially feasibile.

Expert advice and Consulting

enerVista.com provides a forum and brings focus for solving specific issues quickly. It is possible to seek guidance and assistance from within and outside the utility during crucial outages and equipment related issues. enerVista.com provides Internet-based access to supervisors or specialists within the utility organization as well as suppliers and consultants (through passwords). This facilitates an open forum for getting the best expertise within a short time and to focus on the specific technical issue on hand.

Mergers and Aquisitions

During mergers and acquisitions, the present supervision/control center may have to be relocated to another place based on business needs. The transition management of the control center from one location to another is often expensive and a typically time consuming effort. enerVista.com can create a virtual supervision/control center any where there is an Internet connection thus saving both time and money.
