Whether it is on the North Face of the Eiger or a family outing, climbing Nanga Parbat or biking the Trans-Alp, it all begins with an idea. Big ideas, however, can only be turned into reality with the right kind of equipment. Hans Deuters mission to create the perfect rucksack began back in 1898. Today, the likes of Anderl and Andi Heckmair, Hermann Buhl and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner represent the countless mountaineers, climbers, hikers and mountain bikers that have turned their dreams into reality with Deuter. Over the past 112 years, Deuter has experienced natural growth spurts such as the first back ventilation system in the 30s, the Aircomfort system introduced in 1984 or the first bike rucksack in 1990, as well as periods of careful and considered maturity, where systematic improvements were made. Even now, in the third millennium, each new addition to the Deuter family is not conceived behind a desk but rather exactly where it will spend the rest of its life in the outdoors. Deuters integrated Shield System features a multilayer construction which minimises, or even prevents injury occuring during a fall. Mutually complementary foam layers and plates combine to give comfort and maximum safety during a fall. The shock-absorbing core component is the viscoelastic SC-1* Foam. SC-1* Foam sets benchmark standards with its progressive shock-absorption function. A slow impact increase leads to the PSA back protector reacting gradually, whereas a rapid impact shock means the protectors resistance increases progressively quicker. The SC1 foam also features a Memory Effect after a de formation it goes back in its original shape and can therefore be used again and again. Two layers of PE offer additional protection against sharp or pointed objects while soft foam pads guarantee carry comfort.

How Mr Heckmair set off the Transalp avalanche
Heckmairs pioneering tour back in 1990 took him from Oberstdorf (Germany) to Lake Garda (Italy) here at the Schlappiner Joch. It was only a small step for him as a mountain & bike guide yet a giant leap for biking mankind.
Everybody laughed at my idea of traversing the Alps and developing specific gear for this project. Centurion did not. And neither did Deuter. TRANSALP-PIONIER ANDI HECKMAIR
Some people create high-flying dreams to overcome a personal low. Andi Heckmair is one of them. Back in 1988, he was lying in a hospital bed after he had crashed with his bike. He spent his time thinking about things to do after his recovery. This is when he came up with the idea of crossing the Alps. Yet not on foot, but on one of those solid bikes that had made their way across the ocean from the States a few years back. Heckmair was the first guide to lead a bike expedition in the Himalayas in 1987 from Lhasa to Kathmandu. And Centurion boss Wolfgang Renner was part of the crew. Two years later Andi had checked numerous trails and routes and the idea of riding across the Alps became reality. In August 1990, Andi Heckmair and his friends Wolfgang Renner and Gerhard Strittmatter got on their bikes and 4 days, 10 passes, 315 km and 11.000 altitude meters later they had invented the Trans Alp. And along with it the bike pack. Back then, none of the rucksacks on the market were designed for biking. Heckmair therefore invented the "Bike1". And Deuter produced it. In 1990, the godfather of all bike backpacks featured many, many details that other packs still dream of today

Bikes, equipment, technology many things have changed in the past 20 years. The breathtaking scenery between Oberstdorf and Lake Garda remains the same. TRANS ALP PIONEER ANDI HECKMAIR
20 years on, everything remains different the stiff bikes have turned into full suspension bikes, cotton has been replaced by functional synthetics and the "Heckmair-Route" has been followed up by hundreds of different routes across the Alps. In 1990, three riders crossed southwards in 2010, there are tens of thousands. Today, bikers enjoy many conveniences: GPS tracks, bike hotels, laundry service, luggage transportation. They have made it more or less possible for (almost) every healthy and fit rider to cross the Alps. Still, despite all those improvements you still have to pedal yourself And the original route still promises the most spectacular and most adventurous ride. The 20th anniversary was, of course, celebrated on the saddle from Oberstdorf to the Lago. The jubilee crossing was organized by Top Mountain Tours, equipped by Deuter and Centurion and guided by the man himself Andi Heckmair. By the way: What do the Heckmair route, Deuters "Trans Alpine" and Nutella have in common? All three have been copied umpteen times yet none of the replicas has ever come close to the original. And none ever will.

The caravan moves on upwards to the legendary Tremalzo tunnel. Looking down on the numerous turns of the old military road and the lake 1.800 m below, you look down in wonder and know: all the pain and all the sweat was worth it!

Tall people can now finally enjoy a perfect fit! Sports people who are between 1.85 m and 2.00 m tall often have difficulty finding backpacks that fit their longer backs. We decided to put an end to that and made our favourite Deuter backpack models available to suit taller people. The back lengths have been extended by 6-9 cm. Overall, backpacks in the Extra Long (EL) series have also grown in terms of volume. Back systems, features and details remain the same in the EL models as they are in the standard models, however.

Simple and secure pannier attachment with durable plastic coated metal hooks and lower tensioning hook. To mount Rack Pack: Locate the lower hook, lift the pannier up to hook on to the carrier frame, adjust lower hook tension to suit riding conditions. For further security, the panniers can be joined together with the extra strap.
Both the Rack Pack and Essential Bike series can bequickly and easily mounted on the bike by means of the trusty Quick Lock system. Safety catches within the hooks secure the pannier bag to the upper carrier tube. Lifting the pannier by the handle strap will automatically lock or unlock these catches. The lower variable-hook keeps the pannier from swinging outwards and can be turned 180 degrees. The mechanism is fast and simple to adjust. Suitable for carrier racks up to 16mm in diameter. Fabrics
Most important: the right backpack materials. Not just so that your Deuter will really get through the thick and thin with it's high quality fabrics, but also, so the creative combination of the right fabrics on the pack will optimise performance and reduce weight. Deuter uses only selected backpack fabrics that are rip- and abrasion-proof, colourfast, UV-resistant, quick drying, water resistant, long lasting and lightweight. The two important synthetic materials are nylon (polyamide) and polyester. High density polyamide fabric is extremely abrasion resistant in a thin layer and is more robust than polyester. It is popular due to its high performance in a light weight layer. Polyester doesn't absorb water, and doesnt bleach when exposed to UV rays. Most importantly, the rugged polyester fabric has a typical soft touch yet is not heavy because polyester fibres are lighter. The fabrics are specified by their thread thickness in denier (den), which is the thread weight specified over a thread length of 9,000 metres. This means that a 9,000 metre long 600 den thread, for example, would weigh 600 grams. To provide high water resistance, Deuter fabrics are coated exclusively with polyurethane (PU) which is abrasion-proof, cold-resistant and flexible. YKK zippers: currently the best available on the market, these top quality zippers are very robust and reliable.
Polyester Polyamide (Nylon)

Ventilation System Deuter-Super-Polytex: Made from 600 den Polyester thread and with a thick PU coating, this multi purpose fabric is robust and lightweight. It is most suitable for backpacks, used in average conditions to keep the weight to a minimum. Deuter-Duratex: A Polyamide-fabric that is extremely abrasion and tear resistant. For all larger backpacks this is used for the bottom panel. It has a thread of 1000 den and a thick PU coating on the inside. Deuter-Ripstop-Nylon: The regular chain-andweft weaving of stronger threads creates a strong, but light 420 den nylon fabric with good abrasion and rip stopping characteristics. The outside is water-repellent, the inside is PU coated. Taffeta Carbonite: Comparable to the 190 Deuter-Taffeta-Nylon. Taffeta Carbonite however, is highly waterproof due to the special carbonite PU coating. This together with its Ripstop weave for increased tear resistance, makes it ideal for our waterproof accessories. Deuter-Ripstop-Polytex: The sturdier version of the Deuter Super Polytex with woven in stronger threads. PU coated.
3D-Air-Mesh: A 3 mm thick and therefore three dimensional polyester mesh. The optimum air permeability and padding effect turns it to the ideal lining fabric for back padding, shoulder straps and hip belts. It offers maximum durability and comfort.
Deuter-Duratex-Lite: Robust and durable Duratex in a 500 denier weave. Markedly lighter than the 1000 weight version yet still durable, tear-proof and robust. PU coated.
Deuter-Microrip-Nylon: 210 den Nylon fabric with strong ripstop threads and PU coating. This fine, lightweight and yet abrasion resistant nylon is optimal for lightweight backpack construction.

Deuter-Duratex500Carbonite: Tougher and more robust than polyester, this nylon material is very durable for a lightweight material, and has a high tearstrength. The special carbonite PU coating on the inside also renders the 500 denier nylon highly waterproof and thus is the ideal material for our DS Rack Pack bike bags.
Deuter-Ripstop 210: ultra-tight weave, hard wearing 210 Denier Nylon. Recognisable by the very technical, shiny surface incorporating tough Ripstop threads. This lightweight and extremely robust fabric is perfectly suited to the manufacture of lightweight products. Top quality PU coating. This highly technical material is used for lightweight Alpine and Trekking models.
Microrip Light: This very fine Nylon fabric is extremely lightweight. The PU coating and tight weave enable it to achieve a high waterproof specification. Similar to our other lightweight textiles, the stronger ripstop threads reinforce the lighter main fabric in order to increase its resistance to tearing. Used for our Bike Bags and Accessories.
