Series 3000 & JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Tower Fan Drive Systems

The fan drive system provides the cooling air necessary to reject unwanted heat from the system to the atmosphere and is therefore, the heart of a cooling tower. If the cooling tower fan drive is down, the entire system can be out of commission. Therefore, an important consideration in the selection of a cooling tower is the reliability and serviceability of the fan drive system. The BALTIDRIVE Powertrain Fan Drive System is a standard feature of Series 3000 and JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Towers. It is the product of over 60 years experience in the design and manufacture of evaporative heat transfer products. While the alternative drive systems discussed in this Product Report are also available, only the BALTIDRIVE Powertrain provides the reliability, durability and versatility demanded by todays industrial cooling, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Standard BALTIDRIVE Powertrain

Standard construction of the Series 3000 and JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Tower features the exclusive BALTIDRIVE Powertrain. This is a unique, B.A.C. engineered drive system, consisting of a specially designed powerband and two cast aluminum sheaves located on minimum shaft centerline distances. The solidbacked, multigroove, neoprene/polyester powerband provides the premium quality necessary for cooling tower service. The noncorroding sheaves eliminate rust and corrosion while providing the additional benefit of extended belt life. Backed by B.A.C.s comprehensive Five Year Motor and Fan Drive Warranty, the BALTIDRIVE Powertrain provides the maximum reliability, durability, and serviceability in cooling tower service.

Optional ENERGY-MISER Fan System

The ENERGY-MISER Fan System is an energy saving capacity control option available with the BALTIDRIVE Powertrain on Series 3000 and JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Towers. The system consists of two standard, single-speed motors and drive assemblies connected to the same fan shaft. One motor is sized for full speed and load, and the other is sized for twothirds speed and approximately one-third of full load horsepower. This allows the system to be operated like a two-speed motor, but with the reserve capacity of a standby motor in the event of a failure. Controls and wiring are virtually identical to those required for a twospeed/two-winding motor. Operating at reduced load and/or wet bulb temperature achieves energy savings superior to that of conventional two speed motors. The ENERGYMISER Fan System includes stocked components for quick replacement from any B.A.C. factory.

Optional Gear Drive System Close-Coupled Motor

A gear drive system is available as a fan drive option on Series 3000 and JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Towers. Both the gear drive and couplings are selected with a 2.0 service factor. In addition, the gear drive meets AGMA Class 10 tolerances and CTI standards. Gear construction includes a nickel-alloy steel shaft, casehardened gears, self lubrication, and a singlepiece, gray iron housing. Optional accessories available with the gear include external fill line, oil pump for low speed operation with a VFD, oil level switch with alarm, and oil heater for reliable operation in sub-freezing climates. Over 60 years of cooling tower experience assure long, trouble free service with this fan drive option.

Optional Gear Drive System, Externally Mounted Motor

A gear drive system with a TEFC motor mounted outside the airstream is also available on Series 3000 and JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Towers. A non-corrosive carbon-fiber composite drive shaft with stainless steel hubs is selected with a 2.0 service factor. The motor and drive shaft ship within the tower for easy field installation. The dynamically balanced composite shaft and rigid mechanical support structure maintains alignment through the mechanical drive train. All of the gear accessories mentioned previously are available with the externally mounted motor option.

All BAC Fan Drive Systems include a comprehensive 5 year motor and fan drive warranty

Series 3000 and JE PREMIER SERIES Cooling Tower Fan Drive System ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS
BALTIDRIVE Powertrain
The cooling tower fan shall be driven by a single-piece, multi-groove, solid-backed V-type powerband with taper lock sheaves designed for 150% of motor nameplate horsepower. The powerband shall be constructed of neoprene reinforced polyester cord specifically designed for cooling tower service. The drive system shall be suitable for operation in sub-freezing ambient temperatures and over the full speed range required for reliable capacity control, including application of variable speed drives. Fan drive systems utilizing geared speed reducers will not be accepted.

ENERGY-MISER Fan System

The cooling tower fan shall be driven by the ENERGY-MISER Fan System consisting of two(2) single-speed motors connected to a common drive shaft with corrosion resistant, cast aluminum taper lock sheaves and two (2) singlepiece, multi-groove, solid-backed V-type powerbands designed for 150% of motor nameplate horsepower. The powerbands shall be constructed of neoprene reinforced polyester cord specifically designed for cooling tower service. The drive system shall be suitable for operation in sub-freezing ambient temperatures and over the full speed range required for reliable capacity control. Fan drive systems utilizing geared speed reducers and/or two speed motors will not be accepted.

Gear Drive System, Close-Coupled Motor

The cooling tower fan shall be driven by a right-angle gear drive specifically designed for cooling tower service. Spiral bevel or spiral bevel/helical gears shall be designed in accordance with the Cooling Tower Institute (CTI) and American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) standards with a minimum service factor of 2.0 based on motor nameplate horsepower. The gear shall be suitable for both forward and reverse operation.
