Part-A 1. Power management is implemented in the latest motherboard. Delineate the key idea behind this statement.

ANS) A method for power management of a motherboard is provided to manage a power supply on the motherboard and specially to manage an output power of a power management module on the mother board. The motherboard at least comprises a microprocessor, and the power management module provides a power with a number of output phases to the microprocessor. First, a first load of the microprocessor is detected in a first time. Then a second load of the microprocessor in a second time is detected. When the second load is less than the first load and is lower than a first predetermined value, the number of output phases of the power outputted from the power management module is reduced. How can we say that information system is different from information technology? ANS) Information Systems is a large umbrella referring to systems designed to create, store, manipulate, or disseminate information. Example of an information system is a pencil and a piece of paper. The two objects themselves are just tools, but together they create a system for writing (information). The term Information systems has been around a lot longer than the computer, or the term information technology. These days the two are sometimes thought to be synonymous, but that, in most cases, is a misconception.
2.

Information technology falls under the information systems umbrella, but has nothing to do with systems per say. IT deals with the technology involved in the systems themselves, e.g. an information system like wiki.answers.com contains many information technologies. Servers, server operating systems, web-server software (IIS, Apache, et al), and code written for the web-server software (PHP, C#, VB, PERL, Ruby, et al). Even your computer and browser make up part of this information system. Like the pencil and paper example, each one of the mentioned parts of this information system in itself is an information technology 3. What are the key challenges faced by the software engineering? ANS) Three key challenges facing software engineering are: 1) The heterogeneity challenge: Computers are pervasive in modern life. When users perform transactions, they usually do not limit their access to their own computers. Instead, the users tend to access systems distributed globally across networks with heterogeneous technology and support systems. Further, legacy

systems integrate with modern systems creating new challenges in building systems that are flexible. Heterogeneity challenge is the challenge involved in developing flexible systems that work well in different technological background. 2) The delivery challenge 3) The trust challenge

Part-B 3. Socket of a Motherboard decides what type of CPU we need to use. Is this statement true? Justify your answer. ANS) A CPU socket or slot is an electrical component that attaches to a printed circuit board (PCB) and is designed to house a CPU (also called a microprocessor). It is a special type of integrated circuit socket designed for very high pin counts. A CPU socket provides many functions, including a physical structure to support the CPU, support for a heat sink, facilitating replacement (as well as reducing cost), and most importantly, forming an electrical interface both with the CPU and the PCB. CPU sockets can most often be found in most desktop and server computers (laptops typically use surface mount CPUs), particularly those based on the Intel x86 architecture on the motherboard. A CPU socket type and motherboard chipset must support the CPU series and speed. 4. Suppose we have a Pentium III and we want to enjoy the features of Pentium IV for graphics. What are the considerations to be taken to upgrade a motherboard? What Characteristics of software make it different from other engineering products?

5.

ANS) A software engineer is an engineer who applies the principles of software engineering to the design, development, testing, and evaluation of the software and systems that make computers or anything containing software, such as computer chips, work.

Software engineering (SE) is a profession dedicated to designing, implementing, and modifying software so that it is of higher quality, more affordable, maintainable, and faster to build. It is a "systematic approach to the analysis, design, assessment, implementation, test, maintenance and reengineering of software, that is, the application of engineering to software." The term software engineering first appeared in the 1968 NATO Software Engineering Conference, and was meant to provoke thought regarding the perceived "software crisis" at the time. The IEEE Computer Society's Software Engineering Body of Knowledge defines "software engineering" as the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software, and the study of these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software. It is the application of Engineering to software because it integrates significant mathematics, computer science and practices whose origins are in Engineering.
