About Walthamstow (2010-11-15 15:26)

Walthamstow is a district of northeast London, England, located in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. It is situated 6.4 miles (10.3 km) north-east of Charing Cross. The area is identied in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London. Walthamstow is bordered to the north by Chingford, south by Leyton and Leytonstone, east by the southern reaches of Epping Forest at Woodford and west by Tottenham and the River Lea valley. Leyton High Road, Hoe Street, Chingford Road, Chingford Mount (passing south-north through Walthamstow and its neighbouring towns) form part of an ancient route from London to Waltham Abbey. Walthamstow is recorded circa 1075 as Wilcumestowe ("The Place of Welcome") and in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wilcumestou. King John visited Shern Hall (Shernhall Street), in 1213; the building survived until 1896. At one point Walthamstow was just a culmination of ve small villages, and affairs were discussed at Vestry House, acting as the rst town hall. In 1870 it had grown to the size of a small suburb and a town hall was built in Orford Road from which affairs of the village were run ( which now takes place in Forest Road - since 1941). Until the 19th century it was largely rural, with a small village centre (now Walthamstow Village see below) and a number of large estates. The main route through the district, was the aforementioned Hoe Street. Additionally, there were various smaller lanes, crossing the town. The road now known as Forest Road was originally named Clay Street. Further south, the High Street was named Marsh Street, and led from the original settlement out to the marshes. Shernhall Street is an ancient route, as is Wood Street, to the east. With the advent of the railways and the ensuing suburbanisation in the late 19th century, Walthamstow experienced a large growth in population and speculative building. From 1894 Walthamstow was an urban district and from 1926 a municipal borough in Essex. In 1931 the population of the borough, covering an area of 4,342 acres (17.57 km2), peaked at 132,972. In 1965 the borough was abolished and its former area merged with that of the Municipal Borough of Chingford and the Municipal Borough of Leyton to form the London Borough of Waltham Forest in Greater London. Other places in east London formerly of the county of Essex, such as Ilford and Romford were placed into London Boroughs along with Walthamstow. The postal codes for those districts failed to change, however. The High Street is dominated by Walthamstow Market, which began in 1885, and occupies all but the last 100 metres of the street. It is reputed to be a mile long, but in fact measures approximately one kilometre. The market is open ve days a week (not Sunday or Monday), and there is currently a Sunday farmers market. The street is lined with shops: a selection of high-street chains, but also many independent small shops specialising in food, fabrics, household goods etc. as well as cafs. The overall tone is downmarket and unique. There are two patches of new-ish development: at Sainsburys, and The Mall Selborne Walk covered shopping centre both of which have large multi-storey car parks. The historic central library on the High Street was modernised and expanded in 2006 - 2007, although there were claims that this was at the expense of book holdings. According to the Waltham Forest Guardian, "almost a quarter of a million books have gone missing from Waltham Forest libraries amid claims they have been burned or pulped" and the boroughs library stock fell by 60 % over the two previous years. At the same time, a large plot at the corner of High Street and Hoe Street was set for substantial redevelopment as a retail space. This site previously contained the towns central Post Ofce and a shopping arcade, originally built in the 1960s. Plans for the redevelopment of this site fell through in 2005. It is now just a pedestrianised area with benches. 8

Walthamstow Central is the main town centre and includes Selborne Road and the High Street. Walthamstow Village conservation area is a peaceful and attractive district to the east of what has become the commercial centre of Walthamstow. The area is roughly dened as being south of Church Hill, west of Shernhall Street, north of Grove Road and east of Hoe Street. Orford Road is the main route through the district, though even this is a quiet thoroughfare by the standards of London. The village has a small selection of specialist shops, pubs and restaurants, and house prices tend to be higher in the streets of this neighbourhood. It was voted best urban village in London by Time Out magazine in 2004. Upper Walthamstow is to the east of Walthamstow Village. The areas main thoroughfare is Wood Street, which has a good selection of shops and local businesses, and is served by railway, with a station on the Liverpool Street to Chingford line. Walthamstow has a wide variety of housing stock, but the vast majority of residential property was built in the early 20th century. From Coppermill Lane in the west (next to the marshes), to Wood Street in the east, there are scores of Edwardian and 1920s terraced streets. The area along Markhouse Road and St James Street has many examples of Warner properties. These were developed as affordable housing for the working classses in the early part of the 20th century. Bombing raids in World War II and urban redevelopment projects in the 1960s and 1970s have left areas with more modern housing, mostly in the shape of low-rise concrete blocks. The northern continuation of Markhouse Road is St Jamess Street to which Blackhorse Road follows, served by both underground and railway stations, which in turn becomes Blackhorse Lane. This is bound on its western side by industrial units and warehouses. The London Borough of Waltham Forest has proposed developing the area around Blackhorse Road station to become a gateway to the town. Highams Park and Hale End, though both in the E4 postcode, are historically part of Walthamstow. Although bounded by the marshes to the west and parts of Epping Forest to the east, there is little open space in the actual town. There were originally two commons in the town, Church Common, adjacent to St. Marys Church in Walthamstow Village and Markhouse Common, located off Markhouse Lane (now Markhouse Road) and what is now the eastern end of Queens Road. Both open spaces were lost in the 19th century, when the land was sold to property developers. [Wikipedia]

The William Morris Gallery is the only public Gallery devoted to William Morris - designer, craftsman, writer, socialist and conservationist - and displays an internationally important collection illustrating his life, achievements and inuence. William Morris was born in Walthamstow in 1834. The Gallery is delightfully housed in the 18th Century Water House, Morris family home from 1848 to 1856, and set in Lloyd Park in Walthamstow. The William Morris Gallery is closed for redevelopment until July 2012. It is being transformed into a world-class cultural destination where people of all ages will enjoy and be inspired by the life, work and extraordinary inuence of William Morris.

The Gallery is delightfully housed in the 18th Century Water House, a substantial Georgian dwelling and Morris family home from 1848 to 1856, and set in Lloyd Park in Walthamstow. The Gallery, which was opened by Prime Minister Clement Attlee in 1950, is the only public Gallery devoted to Englands best-known and most versatile designer. The grounds of the William Morris Gallery, now attractively laid out as Lloyd Park, were once the extensive gardens of Water House, and include the original moated water-garden where Morris and his brothers and sisters played as youngsters. To commemorate the 1996 Centenary of Morris s death, trees featured in his poem Tapestry Trees have been specially planted to form a tree-trail in the Park.

Permanent exhibitions Woven and printed fabrics, rugs, carpets, wallpapers, furniture, painted tiles, stained glass and books are displayed along side Morris satchel and coffee cup which provide a more personal glimpse into his busy life. Morris designs are shown with those of Burne-Jones, Rossetti and Webb, who worked together in the rm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner &Co. These displays are complemented by the Brangwyn Gift of paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics by Sir Frank Brangwyn R.A., as well as works by Morris followers in the Arts and Crafts Movement, 14

Vestry House Museum Walthamstow (2010-11-15 19:07)

Vestry House Museum presents the history of Waltham Forest. Attractively located in the Grade II listed Vestry House, the Museum can be found in the delightful historic Walthamstow Village. Originally built as a workhouse in 1730, Vestry House has since been a police station and a private house, before it opened as a Museum in 1931. Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm Pre-booked groups and school visits also welcome on Tuesdays. Entry is free. Vestry House, a two storey building of brown stock brick, was constructed in 1730 by order of the Vestry. At that time the Church Common covered 27 acres to the south of Church End. The Vestry purchased an acre of this land close to the village for 6 on which to build their workhouse. A simple eight roomed symmetrical house was initially built on the site at a cost of 343, 12s, 3d. The ground oor room to the left of the front door was to be used for Vestry meetings, and the rest of the building was to be occupied by the paupers. The inscribed stone plaque erected above the entrance to mark the completion of the building still remains in position and declares:

"if any would not work neither should he eat" . Vestry House had since been a police station and a private house. From 1882 until 1892 the oldest part of the building was used as the headquarters of the Walthamstow Literary and Scientic Institute, after which it became a private house, occupied by the Maynard family until 1912, and then for the next eighteen years Miss Constance Demain Saunders, JP. In 1930 Miss Demain Saunders offered the remainder of her lease of Vestry House to the Walthamstow Borough Council (the successor to the Local Board), and it was decided to use this historic building to house a museum, the aim of which was to be an educative and popular introduction to the social and economic history of our town and district. 16

Permanent exhibitions Themed displays capture the unique heritage of this area or north-east London. Explore life during past and present Waltham Forest through our fascinating displays on domestic life, local history, fashion and toys and games. See our Victorian parlour and enter our police cell! Learn about and see the Bremer car. Built locally in 1892 by engineer Frederick Bremer, the Bremer car is the earliest British built combustion engine car.

The workhouse garden and function room As part of a visit to the Museum you can enjoy a walk through our workhouse garden, which displays plants known to be grown here by the workhouse inmates in the eighteenth century. You can also take a stroll through our ower, herb and object gardens. We have an active volunteer group which maintains the garden. Please contact the museum if you would like to help. You may wish to consider booking the Function Room to hold your meetings and events.

The Bremer car The main individual exhibit is the Bremer car, built by Frederick Bremer in 1892, and one of the claimants to being the oldest British-built petrol driven car.

Victorian parlour One of the rooms at the museum has been set up to reconstruct a typical local parlour from about 1890.

Walthamstow tea service Little is known about the origins of this set of cups, saucers and bowls other than it was produced in the 1820s for a local well-to-do family. Many of the items depict local houses and because of this it has become known as the Walthamstow Tea Service. A selection from the set is permanently on display.

The police cell As Vestry House once housed a police station the museum has made use of this in its exhibitions. One of the cells still exists with its original bench and toilet and in this area we have recreated a scene from April 1861. We know that on this evening Sgt. Charles Carpenter was on duty whilst James Wright, a local labourer, had been arrested for being drunk and disorderly. During a visit you may be "lucky"

Domestic life The Domestic Life gallery looks at utensils used for washing, ironing, cooking and for serving food during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Toys and games The Toys and Games gallery looks at typical toys that were being played with or manufactured in Waltham Forest during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Costume The Costume gallery contains examples of clothing from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries including a Georgian dress, a Victorian wedding dress and a Second World War wedding dress. Within the gallery there is also a display about making and repairing clothing.

Made in Waltham Forest This gallery looks at local companies and industries that have left their mark on the borough during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. On display are plastic items made by Halex, cameras made by Ensign, toys made by Britains and hand carts made by Abbotts.

Wooden panelling In the costume gallery is a wonderful example of wood panelling. This sixteenth century panelling, including the re place, was removed from Essex Hall during its demolition in 1933 and placed into the museum. E17 Film Workshops 2010 (2010-11-15 19:58)

Welcome to the rst International Film Festival in Walthamstow. Running as part of the E17 Arts Trail, this is the rst time that Walthamstow has celebrated talent in cinema since the glory days of the Hollywood cine studios, which were formerly based in the borough and were the forerunners of their more famous counterparts Elstree, Pinewood and Hollywood USA. Aptly named "boutique" in style, this small but exciting cinematic event will take place in retro furniture shop Beyca, at 83 Grove Road E17. The lms will be shown over the ten days of the festival on a specially commissioned vintage style 1950s television. All lm entries are 5 minutes in length or under and will be shown on a loop so that viewers can watch as few or as many lms that they like. With 90 lms from international locations such as Japan, Canada, Russia, Czech Republic and USA, as well as our own borough of Walthamstow and neighbouring London boroughs, there is plenty to see, to appreciate and enjoy. All foreign lms are subtitled and all the content is suitable for family viewing. Following the festival, the plan is to run lm production, scriptwriting and lm appreciation workshops so be sure to register any interest at www.e17lms.com We would like to extend our thanks to all of our unpaid volunteers, who worked tirelessly to make the lm festival happen, all of our judges, sponsors and supporters, to Lulu and Rudy for giving up their summer holiday and to the generous public who bought the I Love Walthamstow merchandise to fund the Festival Programme production. Paul and Liza Fletcher, Walthamstow International Film Festival Directors.

Film Festival Programme. [completed] E17 Film Workshops Tuesday 16th November 2010 For more details please contact Liza at www.e17lms.com. 5 per session.

Orthodox Icons Paintings (2010-11-16 10:46)

Orthodox Icons Paintings

Yesterday an orthodox icons painter came to us and asked us if we can help her nd people interested in her works in & around London. I dont know how many people are into this, but its a certain fact that most of UKs population share Christianity as they main road to spirituality.

According to our dear friend, Wikipedia, there are not so many Orthodox people in UK, but there are few communities to count on.

Getting back to our sheeps, the icons painter said that she can make considerable discounts for orders that include more than 2 paintings.

The paintings are made with golden leaf (23 karat), representing different biblical scenes, with Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, Michael & Gabriel Saints etc.

If you are into religious paintings, believer or not, its something youd want, for sure.

The execution of the works are extraordinary (Im a collector myself) and you could make your own private space for your prayers or simply to reect about life and everything around you.

Talk to us for more info.

An almost complete portfolio of such beautiful you can see here. Unfortunately its in romanian, so youre gonna have to use Google Translation Tool. 22

The Walthamstow Tapestry (2010-11-17 16:05)

Artsnewspaper.tv interviewed the E17 based Turner prize winning artist Grayson Perry about the inspirations behind his latest work The Walthamstow Tapestry. Decked out in his trademark frock Perry is in ne form. I particularly like his comment about working in Walthamstow, I like walking out of my studio in Walthamstow and just seeing the piles of dogshit, the satellite dishes and the north circular road roaring by. Unfortunately the tapestry was only on display at the Victoria Miro gallery in London until November 14th. Maybe it ll come home to be displayed in the Stow one day? Cath Drake: creative writing workshops in Walthamstow (2010-12-02 11:07)

A NEW organisation has been set up to promote creative writing. Walthamstow-based Mendham Writers aims to help starters who are low on condence and encourage people who may not have considered the pastime to realise their potential. The organisation s events will feature established and professional writers. Two workshops will be held at the Vestry House Museum in Vestry Road, Walthamstow, for children and adults early next year. A level courses consist of one year of AS level study plus one year of A2 level study. Some subjects may only be available at AS level. Art and Design is also available as the Foundation Studies Diploma in Art and Design, a recognised qualication for entry to arts-based degrees. * Child Care and Education is also available as a Foundation Degree in partnership with the University of East London. ** A range of mathematics modules is on offer in different combinations. Types of Courses For further information about any of the courses on offer telephone us on 020 8928 9000. A Levels and AS Levels Most A level students aim for a place in higher education but A levels are suitable for direct entry into many areas of employment. A levels develop and test knowledge and understanding of a particular subject through examinations and, in many cases, coursework, as well as developing analytical and critical abilities. A level students also develop advanced study skills and become adept in the use of information and communication technology. Most A levels consist of four modules, with the opportunity to attain an AS level after one year. Students begin at least three AS levels plus another course like General Studies, but those with high GCSE grades should take a fourth AS. We will give advice on appropriate combinations. Applied GCE/BTEC National Courses These courses focus on particular areas of work (business, caring, science) and are designed to equip students with the skills to follow a particular career. Both BTEC National Certicates and Diplomas and Applied GCE qualications are well-established ways of gaining entry to higher education. Applied GCE qualications are available in Health and Social Care and Science and are equivalent to two A levels.

College of Arms (2011-01-18 17:06)

The College of Arms is the ofcial repository of the coats of arms and pedigrees of English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth families and their descendants. Its records also include ofcial copies of the records of Ulster King of Arms the originals of which remain in Dublin. The ofcers of the College, known as heralds, specialize in genealogical and heraldic work for their respective clients. Coats of arms have been and still are granted by Letters Patent from the senior heralds, the Kings of Arms. A right to arms can only be established by the registration in the ofcial records of the College of Arms of a pedigree showing direct male line descent from an ancestor already appearing therein as entitled to arms, or by making application through the College of Arms for a grant of arms. Grants are made to corporations as well as to individuals.

Advertise your services here (2011-03-01 20:23)

Our info Weve started this platform in November 2010 purely for our pleasure. There was a problem with content at the begining and there was a problem with Walthamstow. Well, not actually a problem, but the thing is we were too new in the area to know anything. Things are changed now and were proud to say weve met many interesting people around and some great places to hang in. The team consists in 3 people living in Waltham Forest district, all of them self-titled internet freaks because we just spend too much time online. They are Sergiu (project manager), Sorana (graphic designer) and Tim (content manager). The trafc info We will publish monthly a Google Analytics document here to publicly show our trafc statistics. In the rst month we managed to gather around 29 people on this website and 111 pageviews. Now weve grown a bit and Google loves us aswell. We wont tell you were being visited by "more than 30,000 Walthamstow residents" like others, specially because we need to provide some objective statistics to support this statement. But, depending on the targeted keywords, Google positions and the ad place on the portal, advertisement prices may vary. For more info contact us. Since there are some expenses involved (such as hosting or technical support) and we are investing time and energy to constantly improve our service and content were very interested in earnings from advertising. At this point we consider we need to offer much more to deserve donations.

So you like cakes... Handmade cakes.

Cool! We like cakes aswell. Every me and every you loves the small-emotional-ocasions-cakes, regardless of the fact that we eat them or not. Its not the tons of sugar that goes into your bloodstream and gets you high, nor the hunger after a spliff; its not even the taste. Ok, Ill give you that, sometimes it is about the taste. But for most of the times its the thing that comes with the cake, the ritual, the celebration of something of ours, something purely human and maybe not entirely understandable if you come from a strict culture or you suffer from a "no-sugar"-affection. Walthamstow has such a bakery. A handmade-cakes bakery. Caribcakes are Walthamstow based. We provide wonderful handmade cakes for all occasions. Although we specialise in traditional Caribbean Black cake/ Rum Cakes, we also cater for all tastes. We make traditional English recipe fruit Christmas cakes, Sponge cakes, Madeira cakes etc using the nest ingredients available locally. We always use free range or organic eggs and try to use organic products wherever possible. We also cater for Vegan, Gluten free and alcohol free cakes. (David Roger Grifth)

Why? Well, for instance - since the Christmas is very close - you may want to surprise your classic rock friends with a proper pick-up-cake, or you could show your appreciation to your dad with this model if hes into. Check more about the Caribcakes and the cake models on their website and giveem a shout about a discount for a all-family-around-big-cake.

New site category: Adult events (2012-01-09 18:26)

First let me say a big Thank You for 2011 and that everybody from Walthamstow Times wishes you, our readers, a happier and prosperous New Year. We wanted to say that from now on you can send us your latest event details even if they are intended for an adult audience only. The adult events category came in discussion after we recieved a mail from one our readers (thanks Dana) saying that this audience is not currently being served properly in Walthamstow and that there are quite a few people who dont actually know this kind of events happen in the area although theyd be at least interested to go and see (and feel for that matter). To answer a few already formed questions, please read on: To our readers:

no, were most denitely not going to turn Walthamstow Times (WT) into a lame announcements / classieds website by allowing another category of people to announce sexual-related events and meetings. In the end, they are what they say they are and, just like any other drink & dance meeting, there are ground rules and a specic target audience; yes, we take care that the content we publish is generally kids-safe; of course, there are cases when we simply cannot modify certain words/images, such as various art-related names of exhibits, books, theater plays and others alike. For that matter we recommend that you dont let your descendants navigate care-free on this website although its obvious were addressing to a general audience. our readers come from very different backgrounds are we know there are people who want to nd out about this kind of events too. To the organizers:

we can only accept posters and images that are not considered explicit, same goes for the language used in the announcements you send us; 138

please make sure that all the areas in a picture/poster you send us that may be considered offensive for a general audience (underage included) are blurred or covered; please be specic about the rules of the adult themed parties or point the reader (with a link) to a page where he/she can nd out more about it; please add as many relevant details as possible related to the event: where, when it starts/ends, how much it costs, who can get in, how to reach the place etc. All in all, were welcoming you guys to have a weekly look at the Adult only events and give us a feedback below with your thoughts. 3.1. January See you on the 21st January for a start to 2012 that you wont forget. About the club:

BlogBook

At Stiletto we are a collection of friends that have our roots in both the Swing & Fetish scenes, but also the club scene in general. Our door staff are Fetish friendly and have a very low key attitude, our djs play the best in new dance music on a thumping sound system. Bar prices are good value and nothing like the west end prices and the entrance fee is kept as low as possible. All this we believe goes towards creating a night of fun & frolics. But of course no club is anything without its guests. We want you to have a great night out and we will do everything we can to make your night what you want it to be.

All are welcome at Stiletto. Female or transgender, dominant, switch or submissive, fetishist or cross-dresser, straight, gay or bisexual we know you will feel welcome, You be greeted by our two Hostesss and shown around the venue and will nd the evening is a very female friendly atmosphere. All we ask is that you treat everyone else at the club with the respect and the acceptance that you would want to be treated with yourself. More about the venue and the lifestyle on their website: stiletto-uk.com Are you an adult party organizer/planner? Please read our guidelines.

Walthamstow Freecycle Network - give/take stuff the right way (2012-01-13 12:38)

Whether you want to give stuff away or need some things for your household, The Freecycle Network is the right way to do it. First of all, its the most serious and well managed giveaway online network, it has a huge database of users and eveything its structured to help you nd what youre looking for or to give whatever you want to give hassle-free.

Freecycle is a movement of people keeping stuff out of landlls while building a sense of community.

The network its spread all over the world and it comes as no suprise that Waltham Forest has a community here. I myself found some very good items there and was able to get rid of a few unwanted (but fully functional) items I had around my house, it was easy to get in touch with the people and a very smart way of recycling and supporting the whole concept.

Waltham Forest Freecycle(TM) is for all who want to nd a new home for reusable items. The Freecycle Network is made up of 5,013 groups with 8,917,946 members across the globe. Its a grassroots and entirely nonprot movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns and thus keeping good stuff out of landlls. Membership is free, and everything posted must be FREE, legal and appropriate for all ages. To view the items being given away or sought in Waltham Forest, you must be a member of the local group. The Freecylce mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landlls while enabling our members to benet from the strength of a larger community. Check out the Waltham Forest group here.
