More Democratic Candidates Lining Up, Momentum Builds

In the latest proof of Democratic momentum, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee now has strong candidates running in 75 Republican and open districts. This surpasses the DCCCs recruitment goals for the election cycle and puts triple the number of seats in play needed to win the Majority. The candidates running reflect the values of their districts and these newest candidates include mayors, veterans and prosecutors. The DCCC will announce the first round of candidates to qualify for the Red to Blue program in the coming weeks.

This week a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that voters would support a Democratic candidate over a Republican candidate in their district by 4 points (48 percent 44 percent).

Momentum is at our backs as strong Democratic candidates have now stepped forward in 75 Republican and open districts more than we ever could have predicted or imagined, said DCCC Chairman Steve Israel. These candidates not only fit their districts but theyre real problem solvers who are committed to reigniting the American dream and rebuilding the middle class. Thanks to the work of DCCC Recruiting Committee Chairwoman Allyson Schwartz and others, we continue to expand the map of competitive races and have surpassed our recruitment goals for the entire cycle.

The National Journal has called this Democrats strongest recruiting class since 06, no small feat. Additionally, the DCCC has outraised the NRCC by $4.3 million this year despite being in the minority.

Newest Highlighted Democratic Candidates

PA-08: Kathryn Boockvar (v. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick) Bucks County attorney Kathryn Boockvar, who last year sought a judgeship on the Pa. Commonwealth Court, has officially announced her bid for Congress against Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick. [] I am running for Congress because so many people are having trouble supporting their families, covering their college tuition, and paying for their prescriptions, while our current Congress does nothing, she said. She doesnt pull punches, either, accusing Fitzpatrick of voting with the far right. Congressman Fitzpatrick has spent the past year voting with the Tea Party to end Medicare, cut benefits to veterans, gut environmental protections, and deny tax breaks for the middle class, all for partisan power politics. [Politics PA, 1/12/12]

CA-31: Pete Aguilar (v. Congressman Gary Miller) Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar this morning formally announced he is running for California's new 31st Congressional District. Aguilar, 32, a self-described moderate Democrat, said he would work across party lines in Washington to address local concerns, including the region's need for improved infrastructure and its housing foreclosure crisis. There is too much partisan bickering in Washington and not enough problemsolving, and the middle class are the ones who are suffering. We need to get serious about putting people back to work," Aguilar said. "In Congress, I will work to strengthen our economy and create jobs by improving transportation and infrastructure, while protecting the community and helping homeowners stay in their homes. [The Press Enterprise, 1/12/12]

OH-10: Sharen Neuhardt (v. Congressman Michael Turner) I am excited to announce that I am a candidate to represent the citizens of the Miami Valley in Ohio's new Tenth Congressional District, Neuhardt said. We need new voices to break the stalemate that exists in Washington. I will work with community and business leaders, without regard to party affiliation, to do what's best for our community and our country. Neuhardt, a Democrat, said that her priorities will be jobs, restoring our economic security, and protecting and strengthening Miami Valley workers and families. [Sharen Neuhardt for Congress, 1/3/12]

OH-07: Joyce Healy Abrams (v. Congressman Bob Gibbs) In the 7th Congressional DistrictJoyce R. Healy-Abrams of Hills and Dales for the Democratic nomination for a U.S. House seat. Healy-Abrams, who is a new entrant into the congressional race, is the sister of Canton Mayor William J. Healy II. [The Canton Rep, 12/30/11, 1/12]

TX-27: (v. Congressman Blake Farenthold)

Armando Villalobos. Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos has announced his bid for the 2012 Democratic Partys nomination for Texas newly drawn 27th Congressional District. facing our nation to continue down this path. We need leadership that believes the American people are more important than politics. Im ready to help get America moving again. [] I will fight for whats right, but I know how to compromise when its in the best interest of the people and families I serve, Villalobos said. [The Brownsville Herald, 12/8/11]

Anthony Troiani. Anthony Troiani has announced his candidacy to the 2012 Democratic Partys nomination to Texas 27th Congressional District seat. [] My focus is to create jobs, improve South Texas infrastructure, port capacity, energy production and educational opportunities while protecting those who have served and continue to serve our nation, Troiani said. [] Troiani said he believes in economic development such as increased international trade zones and infrastructure development projects like the I-69 corridor. He also believes in the need for a strong government to bring economic attention to small businesses and the working class. [The Brownsville Herald, 12/19/11]

TX-14: Nick Lampson (OPEN) Nick's back. I am. I have sent in the filing papers, so that means I am in the race (for the 14th Congressional District), said Former Rep. Nick Lampson, 66, who held the Ninth Congressional District for eight years [] The culture we've created in Congress really and truly is about what can be done to keep control of your party in Congress, he said, adding that this tends to push elected officials to the far left and far right, ticking off everyone in the middle and they don't want to go vote. [The Beaumont Enterprise, 12/19/11]

CO-06: Perry Haney (v. Congressman Mike Coffman) It looks like state Rep. Joe Miklosi could face a well-funded Democratic primary opponent after all. [] Washington is broken and corrupt, Haney said in his announcement. Congress has been bought and paid for by special interests. Those on the right want to destroy Medicare and hand it over to big insurance companies, and Congress simply hasnt been tough enough on Wall Street or bold enough in fixing our economy. [The Colorado Statesman, 12/16/11]

IL-12: (OPEN)

Brad Harriman. Im running for Congress because I believe that our children shouldnt have to leave this district or this state just to find jobs, Harriman said in a written statement. Harriman, the former St. Clair County regional school superintendent, has received endorsements from the Democratic Parties of St. Clair and Madison counties. [BND, 12/13/11]

Chris Miller. Somebodys got to be the first, says the decorated Iraq War veteran of Carbondale of his desire to stand on the floor of Congress and tell anybody wholl listen, Youve got to make service about service again. Youve got to save the Middle Class. You cant drown the crew to save the ship. [] In 2004 he was awarded the Purple Heart after his military vehicle was attacked by a suicide bomber who drove an explosives-laden truck into his vehicle showering him with glass shrapnel and bursting both his ear drums. OH-15: Patrick Lang (v. Congressman Steve Stivers) Im running for Congress because I grew up in a small Appalachian town as a child, my parents could sometimes afford to heat just one room of the house in wintertime, he said. When the coal mines closed and neighbors got laid off, I saw things go from tough to tougher. Thats why it is so frustrating to watch Congress and see a whole lot of nothing. [] We can do better. We can start by ensuring a strong middle class, protecting Medicare for seniors and creating jobs. Thats why I'm running for Congress. [The Athens News, 12/7/11]

MD-06: (v. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett)

John Delaney. John Delaney, a multi-millionaire financier from Potomac, said Wednesday that he will seek the Democratic nomination for Marylands newly drawn 6th Congressional District, setting up a potentially competitive April primary with State Sen. We're at a point with the decision-making process in Washington where Congress is just completely unable to do its job. [The Baltimore Sun, 1/4/12]

SD-AL: Matt Varilek (v. Congresswoman Kristi Noem) Matt Varilek released an online video today announcing his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to challenge Kristi Noem, R-S.D., for her U.S. House seat. [] I want my little girls to grow up in a state with leaders they can be proud of. Leaders whose first priority is to serve middle-class and working people. Leaders who focus more on bringing people together than dividing them with harsh rhetoric while our problems just get bigger. So thats why I'm going to join this race. [The Daily Republic, 12/2/11]

FL-02: Leonard Bembry (v. Congressman Steve Southerland) I was a farmer and businessman for almost 40 years before I decided that it was my responsibility to pursue public service. I am grounded in North Florida because its always been my home. It is where I was raised and where Susan and I have chosen to raise our family. We love it here, added Bembry. I am concerned about the kind of future we are leaving for our children and grandchildren. The country is not on the right track and our elected leaders in Washington, D.C., are failing the test of true citizenship by playing politics instead of solving problems. [Sunshine State News, 11/18/11]

PA-15: Jackson Eaton (v. Congressman Charlie Dent) Jackson Eaton, who just switched his registration to Democrat, on Thursday officially announced his run against Republican Lehigh Valley Congressman Charlie Dent, painting him as part of a do-nothing Congress and a GOP majority playing chicken with Democrats on issues such as the national debt and jobs. [The Morning Call, 11/17/11]

TN-04: Eric Stewart (v. Congressman Scott DesJarlais) I come from a family of small business owners, educators and people who give back, Sen. Stewart said. We need representatives in Washington who understand that the people of this district are struggling, and are willing to roll up their sleeves and find common ground to solve the problems our families, children and small businesses face. My focus has always been on helping people, creating jobs and improving public education in a common sense, fiscally responsible way. You cant reach these goals when folks in Washington care more about toeing the party line and keeping their job than they do about helping folks back home. I look forward to listening to the hopes and dreams of the voters in Tennessees 4th Congressional district, and taking their voice to Washington. [The Chattanoogan News, 11/17/11]

NC-10: (v. Congressman Patrick McHenry)

Terry Bellamy. Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy, a Democrat, announced today that she will challenge Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry next year. Washington is broke, and people are tired of watching the bickering and political posturing while businesses and families are struggling, Bellamy said in a statement. As mayor, I'm expected to get results and we should expect no less from our representatives. It's time to send some people to Congress who can get the job done, and put North Carolina and the country back to work. We're interested in how we can affect the economy, create jobs, build an environment in Central Illinois that enables companies to create jobs, Goetten said. SC-07: Ted Vick (NEW) Ted Vick announced Friday his intent to run for South Carolina's newly formed seventh congressional seat in the United States Congress.
