Miles to go..
Bhoruka Charitable Trust (BCT) entered into the 48th year of its existence in the field of integrated rural development. BCT moved a long way in the path shown by its founder, Late Shri Prabhu Dayal Agarwal, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. As we near the end of fifth decade, we can take pride in our commitment to providing opportunities for the marginalized. When we founded BCT in 1962, we were unsure of the scope or extent of our work. Today, we feel like we have just scratched the surface of the change we can catalyze, and there is so much more we can do. The magnitude of the challenge we face is laid out starkly by recent studies indicating that the many million Indians living in poverty in India's eight poorest states exceeds that of the entire African continent. Forty eight years look a short period but for us it was a long and eventful journey. The team of deeply motivated staff worked with beneficiaries at the ground level changing their lives, bringing up their confidence and training them to face the world with confidence towards a sustainable livelihood and better living. In this process BCT developed enormous experience and knowledge in the areas of health, education, sanitation, water, Self-Help Groups and livelihoods. This year 2010-11 has seen BCT focusing strongly on issues relating to three essential areas, water, health and sanitation for improving overall development of the community. Our interventions in these areas change ways of community learning, the degree of peoples' access to knowledge and resources, and alter critical societal paradigms. The science behind sanitation, hygiene and water wisdom is central to health, nutrition, education and the ability to work, which remain the world's most pressing social problems. There is also need to create new thinking on how traditional systems of water and eco-systems management, once rejuvenated, could become the starting point for the removal of rural poverty. The scarcity, pollution and mismanagement of water resources and associated too low sanitation levels need to be addressed by means of a national movement for eco-water and sanitation literacy with specific local actions and at national level it has to be far more visible than at present. Therefore, the program was launched for promoting target specific interventions to raise awareness and build capacity for informed decision making on issues concerning water, sanitation and hygiene and related ecological issues. This annual report stands as a testimony to the work done by the members of the BCT family in India during the last year. We, at BCT focus our energies on addressing the root causes of poverty to secure the right of the children to survive, grow, and to develop towards a sustainable future. In the coming years, our aim will be to expand our mandate to address the core issues of poverty and the rights of the children in particular. Our Journey thus far has been possible because of many people who walked with us. We trust each one of you reading this will join us in our journey forward, because the underprivileged need every bit of your support. And we have miles to go BCT Team
