EducationalImplicationsFunctionalVisionAssessment
Thefollowingeducationalimplicationsaredesignedtofollowtheoutlineofthe FunctionalVisionandLearningMediaAssessment.Inadditiontothis,allstudentsneed anassessmentofthesubjectareascoveredbytheExpandedCoreCurriculumfor StudentswithVisualImpairments(Hatlen,1996) AppearanceofEyes Abnormalitiesinappearanceoftheeyesmayindicateaneedfortreatmentand/or counselinginregardtopossiblestaresandadversecommentsbypeersandadults. BehavioralAbnormalities Somestudentswhoareseverelyvisuallyimpairedmayexhibitmannerismssuchaslight gazing,rockingandmovingthehandsorfingersinfrontofeyes.Thesubstitutionof meaningfulactivitiesandreplacementbehaviorsmayhelptodecreasesuchbehavioral abnormalities. EyeResponsesandEyeMovements BlinkResponse:Theblinkresponse,aprotectivemovementoftheeyelidsin responsetoanobjectapproachingtheface,isanindicationofthepresenceofsome degreeofvisionanddepthperception.Studentswithoutaprotectiveblinkresponse maybemorepronetoeyeinjuries. PupillaryResponse:Ifthepupilsofastudentaresluggishinresponding(contracting) toalightsourcefromapenlight,thestudentmayhavedifficultyinadjustingto changesinlighting.Ifthepupilsareofunequalsize,thestudentmayhavedifficulty inaccommodatingwhilereading. PupillaryReflection:Normaleyeswillshowareflectionoflightinthemiddleofeach pupilshowingthattheeyesareproperlyaligned.Iftheeyesarenotproperlyaligned frombirthtoaboutageseven,thebrainwillsuppressvisionintheweakereye causingamblyopia.Amblyopicstudentsmaybehelpedbyproperseating.For example,ifastudenthasverypoorvisionintherighteye,itmightbebesttoseat him/herintherightsideoftheroom. VisualAttention:Studentsmaynotrespondtovisualstimuliduetoneurological damage.Theymayneedtobetaughttousetheirremainingsenses.Studentswith inconsistentresponsestovisualstimuliandpoorfixationskillsmaybenefitfrom specificvisualskillstrainingandenvironmentaladaptations. Convergence:Studentswhohaveconvergenceproblems(inabilityofthetwoeyesto bringtheirvisualaxestofocusonanearobject)mayhaveeyefatiguefromreading andnearvisionactivities.Frequentrestperiodsmaybeneeded,andmore emphasisonlisteningactivitiesmayberequired. EyeMovements:Pooreyemovements(shiftofgaze,scanning,andocularpursuit) canbetheresultofavarietyofconditions.Thismaycausethestudenttoexhibit moreheadmovements,andtoreadslowerthannormal.Traininginsystematiceye movementsmaybeappropriateforsomestudents.

VisualImpairmentResourcePacket

EyeDominance:Studentswithmixeddominance(e.g.lefthandedandrighteyed dominant)mayhavedifficultieswithactivitiesthatrequirethemtolineupatarget withtheirdominanteye.TheTVImayrecommendseatingandplacementof materialsthatwouldaccommodateastrong/bettereyepreference. PeripheralFieldofVision:Travelingcanbeadverselyaffectedbylimitationsinthe visualfield.Studentsmayneedtobetaughttomovetheirheadsandscanbefore movingacrossanarea.Thephysicaleducationteachershouldbeadvisedofthe needtomodifyactivitiesduetothestudentsperipheralfieldlimitations. ColorDiscrimination:Theclassroomteachermayneedtobemadeawareof studentswithcolordeficiency.Modificationsofactivitiesmayinclude:providinggood lighting,usingbright,contrastingcolors,labelingcrayonsandavoidingcolorcoded texts,graphsanddiagrams.Activitiessuchaslabelingclothingandlearninghowto interprettrafficlightsandsignsmayalsobeneeded. LightSensitivityandPreference:Somestudentsperformbetterindimlight(e.g., childrenwithalbinism)andsomeperformbetterinbrightlight(e.g.,childrenwith opticatrophyandopticnervehypoplasia).Thelightingrequirementsmaybenoted ontheeyedoctorsreport.Generally,studentsshouldnotfacewindowsorglare. Somestudentsmayneedtobeseatedawayfromwindows,andsomemayneeda desklampforadditionallighting. VisualPerceptionSkills Assessmentofvisualperceptionskillsisappropriateforpreschoolandprimarylevel studentswhohavenotlearnedtoreadorwriteorstudentswithmultipleimpairments causingcognitivedelays.Suchskillsasvisualdiscrimination,visualmemory,figure groundperception,eyehandcoordination,visualclosureandvisualsequencingmay needtobeprovidedbytheTVIusingadevelopmentalvisioncurriculum,e.g.,Program toDevelopVisualEfficiencyandVisualFunctioning(Barraga&Morris,1980). NearVision Studentswithlimitednearvisualdiscriminationskillsmayneedtobetaughtbypairing tactuallearningwithnearvisionactivities.Systematicsearchpatternswithextratimefor locatingobjectsmaybenecessary.Sometimestactuallearningmayneedtobe consideredastheprimarylearningmode. LearningMedia CurrentPrintFunctioning:Anumberoffactorscanaffectastudentsprintfunctioning suchasnearvisualacuity,ageofonset,causeofimpairment,parentalexpectations, experiencewithprintedmaterialsandconceptdevelopment.Studentswhohavethe samevisualacuityandeyeconditionmaydiffergreatlyintheirabilitytouseprinted materials.TheTVIshouldconsultwiththeregularclassroomteacherandparentsin recommendingthemediaofinstructionandlearning.Somestudentsmaybeableto readregularprint,somemayneedalowvisiondevice,somemaypreferlargeprint, somemayneedtorelyonlistening,andsomemayrelyontactileorbraillematerials. Otherstudentsmayfindthatcombinationsofthesemediaworkbestforthemintheir instructionalprograms.

WritingFunctioning:Studentswhohavedifficultyincopyingprintmaybehelpedby usingadaptivematerialssuchasboldlinedpaper.Assignmentsmayneedtobe shortenedoradditionaltimemaybeneededtoenablethestudenttocompletewriting activities.Alternativemethodsofresponding,suchasmultiplechoiceorwordbanks, ratherthanwritinganswersfully,maybeusedtoshortenthewritingtask.Systematic instructioninhandwriting,andkeyboardingmayberequiredforthestudentwithlow vision. DepthPerception Studentswithdepthperceptionproblemsmayneedspecialinstructiontohelpinthe developmentofeyehandoreyefootcoordinationandinrecognitionofobjectsata distance.TheTVIshouldconsultwiththephysicaleducationteacherandsuggest modificationsasneeded. DistantVision DistantVisualDiscrimination:Studentswhohavedifficultywithdistantvisual discriminationmayneedpreferentialseatingorpositioningforviewingclassroom activitiessuchasexperimentsanddemonstrations.Chalkboardactivities,overhead projectionandmapreadingmayrequirepreferentialseatingforstudentswithlimited distantvision.TheTVImayneedtorecommendthestudentbegiventhatcopiesof classnotes.Theclassroomteachermaybeaskedtoverbalizeeverythingwrittenonthe chalkboard.TheTVImayneedtoconsultwiththeclassroomteacheronwaystomake viewingmostmeaningful. OrientationandMobility:Orientationandmobilityskillsmaybenotedthroughoutthe functionalvisionassessmentprocess.Specialinstructionmaybeneededintrailing, protectiveandsearchtechniques,andinfamiliarizingthestudentwithcommonareasof theschoolbuilding.Athoroughevaluationoforientationandmobilitymaybeneeded.
