GROUND FOLLOW-UP OF AEROMAGNETIC ANOMALIES IN CHAGAI/LASBELLA DISTRICTS, BALOCHISTAN (2004-2008)

SUBMITTED BY THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF PAKISTAN February, 2004

INTRODUCTION
The Chagai magmatic belt, 480 km. long and 140 km. wide, is an Andean type island arc, bounded by the Chaman-Nushki left lateral, transcurrent fault in the east, Dalbandin-Mir Jawa basin in the south, and Afghan desert in the north. It extends into Iran beyond the Pakistan-Iran border. The rocks exposed in the Chagai belt, in the order of predominance, are volcanic, plutonic and sedimentary. The oldest rocks exposed in the belt are submarine, stratified volcanics and volcano-clastics, known as the "Sinjrani Group", which are late Cretaceous in age. The rocks of the group are mainly andesitic lava flows, agglomerates, volcanic conglomerates, tuffs and subordinate limestone, shale and sandstone. The Chagai intrusions of younger age are wide spread in the belt and cut the older Sinjrani Group. These intrusions are granitic, granodioritic, monzonitic, dioritic, tonalitic and gabbroic in composition and range in size from sills, dikes and stocks to batholiths. The intrusions are from late Cretaceous to Pleistocene in age. The Chagai belt hosts several prospects of metallic mineralization, which include copper, iron, molybdenum and gold. Porphyry type mineralization is the most important of all the occurrences found in the belt. At more than twenty localities copper/gold mineralization has been found, of which seven, i.e., Saindak, Koh-i-Dalil, Durban Chah, Kabul Koh, Max G. White, Ziarat Pir Sultan and Dasht-e-Kain, have been proved to be of porphyry type. Hydrothermal alteration in these porphyry copper prospects is mainly associated with tonalitic and dacitic stocks. The Saindak porphyry copper deposit is at the production stage. Preliminary investigations of Dasht-e-Kain and Durban Chah have been undertaken by GSP whereas Koh-i-Dalil has been drill evaluated by TCC/BHB, a multinational Mining Company. All these porphyry deposits have concentric zonal patterns consisting of potassic, phyllic, and propylitic alteration zones. Areas, already leased out to companies will not form the subject of the presently proposed exploration program. Like hundreds of porphyry copper deposits of the world, the porphyry copper system of Chagai magmatic belt was formed as a result of magmatism associated with subduction of the Arabian oceanic lithosphere under the southern edge of the Afghan micro continent in early Cretaceous (Sinjrani volcanism) and has been active sporadically till Recent (Koh-i-Sultan volcanism). Iron mineralization is associated with the volcanics and is quite wide spread. It is high grade and mainly comprises magnetite of magmatic origin. Under an agreement between the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Canada, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) arranged an
2

aeromagnetic survey over an area of 108,000 sq. km. in Balochistan, in response to a request from the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) in 1975. The aeromagnetic survey was completed by M/s Photosur Inc. of Montreal in 1977. The interpretation of data was done by M/s Allan Spector and Associates Limited, Toronto, the consultants appointed by CIDA, and a report was issued in 1981. The basic objective of the aeromagnetic survey was to help the GSP in its national programme of geological mapping and mineral exploration. The consultants presented the interpretation results of about 124,500 line kilometres of aeromagnetic survey in the form of magnetic intensity contour maps - 171 on 1:50,000 scale, 19 on 1:250,000 scale, one composite colour magnetic anomaly map of the surveyed area on 1:1,000,000 scale, and a report. A total of 53 anomalies of which 27 were assigned priority one, and 14 sediment filled depressions were identified by the consultants. The anomalous zones were recommended for ground follow-up for base metals i.e. copper, iron, lead, zinc exploration and the depressions for groundwater investigations. Out of the 53 identified anomalous zones about 50 fall in the Chagai District of Balochistan. Based on the aeromagnetic interpretation the anomalous magnetization due to localized zones of felsic intrusion and/or alteration and localized zones of increased magnetization indicative of increased iron and iron sulphide content in either mafic intrusions and/or metasomatic type mineralization have been recommended for ground follow up for metallic mineral exploration. The sites recommended for follow up investigations have been prioritized. The high priority sites are distributed in the vicinity of Padag, south of Dalbandin, north of Yakmach and south-east of Juzzak where stock-like intrusive are suggested. The association of lead mineralization around the north periphery of the Balanosh intrusive and also magnetite deposits on the east periphery of the Alamreg intrusive substantiate the need for regional survey including geochemical surveys around the interpreted bodies within the Chagai belt that are distinguished by magnetic zoning. In addition to these specific locations, consideration will also be given to regional exploration, like ophiolite belts where chromite and copper sulphide mineralization are observed, promising mineral localities in Lasbela-Khuzdar Axial belt and in areas over Sargodha -Kirana shield rocks where interesting regional geophysical and aeromagnetic anomalies have been noted. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs.162.982 million with no foreign exchange component. It will be executed in 48 months starting in July, 2004. 1. July, 2004 - June, 2008 Nil The main objective of the project is to test through ground follow-up the anomalies identified by aeromagnetic survey carried out in 1977. The Chagai Belt is known to host porphyry type mineralization of which a few like Saindak, Koh-i-Dalil, Durbun Chah, Dasht-i-Kain, have already been tested and found to contain substantial tonnage of copper, gold, silver and molybdenum. The volcanics of the Chagai Belt also host high grade iron ore deposits. The ground follow-up, through the proposed project, will certainly result in the discovery of a number of mineral deposits of base and precious metals which will have a significant bearing on the economy of the country. Exploitation of the hidden natural resources will result in the socio-economic uplift of the region.

Give Administrative Control

The project will be headed by a Project Director (BPS-20), who will have full administrative and financial control. However, all project activities, will be planned under the technical guidance of the Director General, Geological Survey of Pakistan and executed and implemented by
4

the Project Director. Store items, machinery, equipment and vehicles purchased for the execution of the project will be transferred to the regular set-up of the GSP after completion of the project. Depending upon the requirement and demands of the technical inputs of the project additional officers and staff will be drawn from the regular setup of the GSP. The operational expanses and facilities thus incurred will be born from the Project funds. 9. Description and Justification of the Project:

Ground follow-up, recommended as a result of aeromagnetic survey, has been proposed at 15 sites in Chagai District of Balochistan. Gravity and magnetic survey will be carried out at 10-15 sites of priority and drilling will be carried out on the most promising ones. Detailed geological mapping and other geoscientific studies will be done concurrently. The proposed phase of the project will be completed in 4 years starting July, 2004. The proposed investigations will certainly result in the discovery of deposits of base and precious metals. Data base will be developed for geological and techno-economic aspects of the Chagai, area. Mining activities will start resulting in utilization of the hidden natural resources. Publication of maps and reports on the mineral potential of the region will result in attracting investment in the mineral sector. The project following:work will involve the
