PRESENT TEXT PER ASME B31.8 2007 EDITION REVISIONS PER ITEM 03-1621 PROPOSED CHANGES

RATIONALE This item will be used to correct two paragraph references to the BPV Code. These items were first referenced in the B31.8 Code in the 1989 Edition, but since that time, certain paragraphs in the BPV Code have been moved or renumbered. Note that in the ballot material shown below, the first column reflects the 2007 Edition of the Code, the second column reflects the revisions to the Code that have already been approved for publication per Item 03-1621, and the third column shows the proposed changes per this ballot Item.
831.36 Pressure Design of Other Pressure-Containing Components. Pressurecontaining components that are not covered by the standards listed in Appendix A and for which design equations or procedures are not given herein may be used where the design of similarly shaped, proportioned, and sized components has been proven satisfactory by successful performance under comparable service conditions. (Interpolation may be made between similarly shaped components with small differences in size or proportion.) In the absence of such service experience, the pressure design shall be based on an analysis consistent with the general design philosophy embodied in this Code and substantiated by at least one of the following: (a) proof tests, as described in UG-101 of Section VIII, Division 1, of the BPV Code (b) experimental stress analysis, as described in Appendix 6 of Section VIII, Division 2, of the BPV Code (c) engineering calculations 831.3.6 Pressure Design of Other Pressure-Containing Components Pressure-containing components that are not covered by the standards listed in Appendix A and for which design equations or procedures are not given herein may be used where the design of similarly shaped, proportioned, and sized components has been proven satisfactory by successful performance under comparable service conditions. PRESENT TEXT PER ASME B31.8 2007 EDITION 831.37 Closures 831.371 Quick Opening Closures. A quick opening closure is a pressure-containing component (see para. 831.36) used for repeated access to the interior of a piping system. It is not the intent of this Code to impose the requirements of a specific design method on the designer or manufacturer of a quick opening closure. Quick opening closures shall have pressure and temperature ratings equal to or in excess of the design requirements of the piping system to which they are attached. Quick opening closures shall be equipped with safety locking devices in compliance with Section VIII, Division I, UG-35(b) of the BPV Code. Weld end preparation shall be in accordance with Appendix I, Fig. I4. REVISIONS PER ITEM 03-1621 831.3.7 Closures (a) Quick Opening Closures.
