How Can Migration Effect on the Population?

Introduction:
Migration is one of the major effect of to the population. Migration is when a person or a group move from an area or country to another for specific purposes such as job and education. Overpopulation is a global issue that is current happening in many countries. Overpopulation is when too much people are crowded in a area or country. Some of the impact of overpopulation to both the immigrants and native citizens could be urban sprawl, megacities, food crisis and lack of land. Migration and the Effects On the Population? Migration is a major cause of lots of global issues and overpopulation is one of them. 43.7 million people fled their homes by the end of 2010 due to conflict, persecution and other abuses. While many refugees and migrants fled their country seeking protection in other places, many more people were displaced by force within their own country. Most refugees did not receive protection from their government, and some were not recognized as citizens by any government. Among the worlds 27 Population of Migration During 2010 million people internally displaced by conflict, Colombia had one of the largest IDP (Internally Displaced People) populations at the end of 2010, there were 3.6 million registered by the government but 5.2 million if includes the unregistered population. There is also an approximate of 4.9 million registered Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. More than half of the worlds 15.4 million refugees live in urban areas. In Kenya, which has over 400,000 refugees in 2010 there are close to 50,000 urban refugees from Somalia and other countries. Many refugees seek safety and livelihoods in cities. Overpopulation one of the aftermath of migration, people migrate because of the certain reason and most of them migrate with the same reason, conflict. Migrants migrate all over the world be they are now overcrowding cities and countries. A certain event can also be a cause of migration to a certain place, for instance the 1970 oil boom of Lagos or the coffee boom of Sao Paulo

Consequences of Overpopulation:
- Food Crisis: - Food crisis can be one of the consequences of Overpopulation. Food crisis means the price of the vegetables; fruits, meat and other food resources are becoming more expensive which means less people can afford the price of the food. The food resources are more expensive because, more people = less food resources=more expensive food=food crisis. - Overpopulation is when there are too many people in a country or area and not enough resources like food and water. Because of overpopulation there will be a crisis in the amount and price of the

food. 840 million people around the world starve every day and they do not get enough vitamins and minerals from the food that they eat. - Africa is considered a overpopulated place More than half a billion people living in Africa are very poor. They do not have enough money to buy the food they need. In some countries of Africa, people are fighting against each other and many people who know how to farm are killed, therefore lots of farming are abandoned. In Africa, it rarely rain, therefore causing issues such as no access fresh water. Having no rain means drought and when there is drought, crops cant grow and no domestic animals can be raised. - Overpopulation also means the more demand and need for buildings, stores, house and many others, therefore there will be less land for agriculture. More than 100 countries are now importing wheat and 40 are importing rice. More people=less land=less agriculture=less vegetables, fruits, and other food resources=food A Map showing the different levels of food crisis in Africa crisis. - Mega-cities and the Urban Sprawl: - A mega city is formed when a citys population reaches over 10 million people and is still growing rapidly. Megacities are like magnets that attract people. Most of the people living in a mega city suffers below poverty line. (The Modern Metropolis) - Urban sprawl is similar to a mega city, be instead of the population, it is when size and density of a city is growing rapidly. Cities facing urban sprawl is hard to control because the area and the population is to over and therefore causing a city that is not organized and full of slums, an example could be Sao Paulo, Brazil. (The Modern Metropolis) -Lagos, Nigeria : -Nigeria was under the British's control during the 1861 but won independence in 1960 with Lagos as the capital city. During 1970 a huge wave of people migrated to Lagos through the oil boom. Now, it is the most populated city in Africa. The citys population is uncountable and in 5 people a person lives in Nigeria and in 10 people a person lives in Lagos. Around 10,000 people goes to Lagos every week to search for work. But since there isnt not enough jobs for all this people, there were many informal economy. People took advantage to sell food and drinks during the Lagos traffic,

they also scavenge for plastic and metal that could be sold. But many people started doing illegal activity to earn money such as selling drugs and prostitution. Lagos also experienced housing problems, many people could sleep anywhere they can find room. Thousands of migrants lives in slums which lacked good health conditions. People living in slums suffers from high crime rate, diseases, natural disasters and toxic wastes. (The Modern Metropolis) -Sao Paulo, Brazil : -Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, it has the population of over 12 million. Sao Paulo is usually described as a oceanic sprawl because of its large area of land and amount of population. During the 19 century the coffee boom of Sao Paulo made it the center of trade and ail roads. Almost half of the population are immigrants. During the 1950, the city became the home of car industries which therefore attracted more and more migrant to the city. Today, Sao Paulo is the center of engineering, publishing, advertising and designing industries. -But because of the overpopulation in Sao Paulo, one third of the population live below the poverty line. Most of then are pushed to the city edges. The city edge is the citys poorest areas, people built their homes along the sewage. These new areas are shanty towns called favelas. These shanty towns are increasing because of the cities population, and if migrants keeps migrating to the same city they will end up in shanty towns because the citys centers are only for wealthy people. The segregation between the rich and poor is big, it is mentioned that 10 % of the people controls 50% of the populations wealth. (The Modern Favelas (shanty town) of Sao Paulo, Brazil Metropolis)

Conclusion: From the research and investigation I have done, it is shown clearly that migration is one of the major cause of overpopulation. The different events happened can cause a group of migrant migrating to the same country or city, causing a increase amount of the population. Some of the consequences of overpopulation could be the increase amount of food crisis, megacities, urban sprawl and the amount of people living below poverty line and slums.
