M2M-Based Metropolitan Platform for IMS-
Enabled Road Traffic Management in IoT
(IEEE Communications Magazine, 2011)
M2M enables highly scalable direct communications
among wireless enabled heterogeneous terminals, called
M2M devices.
Between M2M devices and central application servers,
called M2M servers.
The ultimate goal of these standardization activities is to
leverage widespread integration of M2M devices with
any existing service-level solution.
No commonly agreed solution has been identified so far.
In the paper here discuss the adoption of the IP
Multimedia System (IMS) to M2M realms.

The retractable bollard deployment, controlled by an M2M
device interface; equipped with the RFID reader
Each retractable bollard hosts an M2M device that
participates to the M2M device domain.
In the network domain, we show the most important
3GPP EPS nodes and IMS components that enable the
communication between M2M device and M2M server
via the mobile operator network.
In the municipality application domain, the M2M server
is the service integration core component: it interacts
with M2M devices via IMS.

Distributed architecture consists of three main
components: the M2M server, the M2M device, and
metropolitan traffic management system, called
(INVENTO).
The M2M server is the core integration component
that glues together M2M devices with authentication
functions and high-level management applications.
Bollard authorization component (BAC) periodically queries the
AAA server.
Obtain the list of vehicles that can be admitted in each limited
vehicular traffic area, and updates it to M2M devices.
Using standard IMS PS SIP-based message exchanges managed
by the IMS AS component.

The M2M device interacts with the M2M server to
receive citizen credential updates, and publish
authorized accesses and possible failures (via the IMS
client component).
The authorization manager takes over user AAA activities.
Diagnostic procedure (DP), which implements the needed
support to verify the continuous operability of all available
retractable bollards.
Bollard actuator control component (BACC) executes the
retractable bollards work.
A web-based user interface that depicts the status of operability to operators
of the municipality control center by showing all of the interesting
information.

Future Internet Apps: The Next Wave of Adaptive
Service-Oriented Systems?
(Proceedings of the ServiceWave 2011, LNCS 6994, 2011)
Future Internet will be built around four major areas:
The IoS (Internet of Services) that relates to the provision,
discovery, composition, and consumption of (software) services
via the Internet.
The IoT (Internet of Things) relates to embedded systems,
sensors and actuators that collect and carry information about
real-world objects via their interconnection with the Internet.
The IoC (Internet of Content) relates to the discovery,
distribution, combination, and consumption of all kinds of
media objects.
Carry meta-information about their content and can be accessed via the
Internet.
NoF (Networks of the Future) relates to ubiquitous
communication facilities (e.g., mobile, broadband).
Future Internet Apps: The Next Wave of
Adaptive Service-Oriented Systems?
Service-oriented systems in the Future Internet, we call
them FI Apps.
The capabilities and features of FI Apps will be increasingly
provided and owned by third parties and shared ownership.
FI Apps in such a way that those applications can
Dynamically and autonomously respond to changes in the
provisioning of services, availability of things and contents
A changes of network connectivity and end-user devices,
together with changes in user expectations.
.Adaptation will become a key capability of FI Apps/

--- Offshore Wind Energy Plant Example
The Future Internet Platform layer constitutes generic
technology building blocks from various Future Internet
areas (IoS, IoC, IoT and NoF).
The Future Internet Application layer constitutes
domain-specific technology building blocks, as well as
domain-specific FI Apps.
The Socio-Economic layer constitutes networks of people
and organizations, which can benefit from the FI Apps.

Future Internet Layers and Adaptation

Future Internet Layers and Adaptation
Cross-Layer Adaptation
Cross-Area Adaptation
FI Apps to adapt not only considering the changes and resources
in one specific area (e.g., service availability in the IoS), but also
regarding other areas (e.g., adapting according to sensor
information availability in the IoT).
Distributed Adaptation
employ a central entity for gathering information from
distributed sources and taking the decisions.
the central entity will only have limited access to information
from the third-party service providers.
a central entity will present classical problems like single point of
failure, lack of scalability, and bottlenecks which will not be
acceptable once the scale of the Future Internet.
Future Internet Layers and Adaptation
Context-Aware Adaptation.
Autonomic and Human-in-the-Loop Adaptation
This means that there will be a range of adaptation strategies
from completely automated (autonomous) to interactive and
manual (human-in-the loop).
Reactive and Proactive Adaptation
Reactively, the application is re-configured due to changes in the
context or due to faults of third party services.
Preventive adaptation is associated with the case in which an
actual local failure is repaired before its consequences become
visible to the end-user.
Proactive adaptation predicts future failures and changes, and
modifies the application before those changes impact.
