WSH Alert Worker Struck by Fragmented Timber Log

In a recent accident, a group of workers was involved in cutting a piece of timber log using a band saw. During the cutting process, the timber log broke into small pieces which flew off the band saw. The flying fragments struck one worker on his head and cut another worker. The former was immediately sent to the hospital where he subsequently succumbed to his head injury. The latter suffered minor cuts on his body and received outpatient treatment at the hospital.

Recommendations* 1. Prior to any work, a risk assessment must be conducted to identify the potential hazards and the risks involved. Where possible, all identified hazards should be eliminated. For the residual risks, safe work procedures must be established with the implementation of the necessary control measures including the provision of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to the workers involved in the operations. 2. For any sawing operations, the correct blade type and width should be utilized, suitable for the work piece to be cut. It is dangerous to cut small items with a large band saw. Consider using alternative methods of cutting that are safer, such as using a chainsaw or a hand operated saw.

3. An adjustable blade guard should be provided to cover that portion of the blade between the table and the top pulley enclosure. It should be easily adjusted to suit the height of the work piece and firmly secured in position before any cutting operations. Additionally, a guard or shield may be installed to prevent fragments from striking workers.

Recommendations* 4. For irregularly shaped work pieces, a planing machine (also known as a jointer in the American context) may be used to cut a flat surface on the work piece before using the band saw. Alternatively, a jig may be used to increase the stability of the work piece during cutting operations. 5. Good housekeeping practices can contribute significantly to the accident prevention efforts and create a better working environment. The presence of scrap wood or tools on the floor or on the band saw table may cause accidents or serious injuries. 6. Workers who are assigned to perform work on machinery need to be provided with safety and health training in addition to the operational training. They need to understand the risks involved in the work and how to protect themselves adequately. 7. Ensure that workers do not carry out work operations on hazardous machines, such as the band saw, without proper authorization or clearance from the management. Supervision must be provided for such work operations, to ensure that Personal Protective Equipment is worn properly by each worker and that the safe work procedures are adhered to.
