Our guild of songwriters will be sharing their gifts with our community this coming September through a benefit concert to raise food funds for Food Bank of Alaska. We will have booths in the entry of the theatre where we will be performing to raise awareness for Salvation Army, Love Inc., New Direction, Beyond Borders, and other worthy nonprofits in our community. We will also have art displayed for sale with a portion of profits going to any one of these charities. As we go into a new time in our nation and the world where fuel prices are sky rocketing with the likelihood that they will stay high for a very long time, weve been thinking about what we should be doing with our finances. Of course in our family we are scaling down in some areas and shifting our money to make room for the now $5 per gallon of gas. So what does that mean for us in the area of giving? I can only tell you what God is talking to me about. He may not say the same thing to you and this is by no means a guilt trip in any way. God is telling me to give out of my poverty. What that means to me is that in my own need I still have something to give. We live in a culture that loves to talk about prosperity and no one wants to face the famine that lay ahead. Let us consider Joseph. He saw 7 years of health and wealth, but he understood that he needed to save it up for the 7 years of famine that lay ahead. I believe that God brings prosperity to the church for His purposes, not our own. Lets begin to consider what may be around the corner and save for the time of need. This is when the move of God will really break out. He always shines in our weakness. I do not enjoy working hard for no pay, but I can tell you this one thing, God causes us to meet every job He gives us with excellence if we give Him our best. I almost look forward to having little, because that is where the miracles begin to happen. Please do not think that I have limited thinking. I believe that God can bring huge wealth to me, however, people who have much do not generally need God. They are self sufficient and do not recognize how empty they can be. There is a new kind of prosperity that God is calling me to. It is a prosperous heart, mind and soul. Prosperous in my emotions, full of grace and courage. Prosperous in my thinking and skills. Prosperous in my inner being that is wants to be full of His righteousness and Spirit. These are the wealthy areas I am gently guided towards as God speaks to me daily. Lets face it...inner character has run out in this culture. We really do not grasp strength of mind in our world. We are all in a quandrum trying to define and rework our understanding of Gods love towards us so that we can give out of His love not our own. We are all in a quandrum trying to redefine what courage is and how to live courageously in this culture. How do we have faith and hope? How can I use the spiritual and physical gifts for His glory? Guess what.....None of these things require finances in order to offer as a sacrifice pleasing to Him. In my poverty I still have MUCH to give. Some churches who have built big buildings and taxed their congregations to the max may find themselves in very 3 Front Yard Worship difficult situations in the near future. Instead of defending ourselves and pointing fingers, or excusing our decisions, lets just begin to connect with each other and other churches and go through these times together. Lets NEVER use our own poverty as an excuse to not feed the hungry. This is not a godly way of living. The purest religion is to feed the hungry and take care of widows and orphans. That is our calling, not big buildings as wonderful as they can be. I pray that God will show all of us how to scale down and become lean giving machines that will reach out more than ever to the hurting, hungry, and lost even as our own finances dwindle. May the supernatural power of God manifest through our giving. May we as broken children in need of our heavenly Father give to others as we would want to have given to us! I have an expectation. I expect God to show His power in the financial crisis coming to our nation and world. I expect God to raise up our Spirit within us to courageously and selflessly meet the needs that are coming our way. Oh...did you think you were already doing that? Not yet. The deficit of our country will usher in the power of God as we begin to give out of our own poverty stricken souls. Melissa Saulnier

Many songwriters do not know what the process is or how to be paid for original worship songs, choir music or hymns. This is accomplished by acquiring a Christian Copyright Licensing International number (CCLI#). If you arent sure what a CCLI# is we are looking for the opportunity to tell you more about your church and the licensing process for using music. All churches must pay licensing fees every month so that original music can be legally sung in congregations around the world. This means that every time your song is sung in one of these licensed churches, you receive a small, ongoing royalty. woman lived amongst the poorest of the poor. She knew she must be about her Fathers business and He specialized in loving and serving the poor and needy. She shared her Fathers heart for the impoverished and gave her life to this mission.2 And so, with children hanging from every limb and sweat pouring from every pore, Mother Theresa worked tirelessly serving the desperate and desolate of Calcutta. Ask Jesus what He would be doing on earth today. His answer will most likely include loving and providing for the poor and afflicted. After all, it was Jesus Himself who said that it wasnt the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. With every ounce of energy, Mother Theresa had a clear resolve and she would stop at nothing to make sure she was fulfilling the greatest commandments to love God and love people. Studying her life transformed me. Jesus Christ was so evident in her life that in learning about her I happily experienced Him. Her heart was completely in line with that of the heart of the One we read about in the Gospels. It was Jesus who went out into the streets and healed, encouraged, and loved on people who had nothing. It was Jesus who showed the love of His Father by feeding 5000+ with a childs lunch. And it was Jesus who gave His life so that we might be saved. God has used and continues to use Mother Theresas life to bring Him glory. lifes song is still heard round the world today. I would be remiss to leave out this lifechanging quote from my newfound hero, Mother Theresa, In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love. Wow. Talk about a brain-teaser. This is completely contrary to what the world is telling us to do and convincing us to be. In todays culture we are told that life is all about us and that we should strive to be great no matter what the cost. Truth is, we were never meant to be great. We were created to make God great, to glorify Him with our lives and enjoy Him forever. If we, as Christians, could grab a hold of this idea and sink our teeth into it, our lives and the lives of those around us would be forever changed. Mother Theresas life is a direct reflection of Gods heart for humanity, which is beating and gushing with love. I am so thankful for her example that alters my life and ministry. Now my focus is on loving greatly though the smallest of things. Residing here in the comfortable USA makes it easy to turn a deaf ear and blind eye to suffering. God has not called all of us to the slums of India, but we are all called to work and love like Jesus. The human heart can be the dirtiest slum of all. Mother Theresas life brings a challenge to go into the nearest slum. We can bring love to the impoverished of heart and soul amongst this lavish waste-land where money is primarily plentiful and material need is a stranger. We too can leave people changed and happier by spreading love and by following the example of this woman who walked and loved like Jesus. She has made His way clearer. Look closely. Those dear, worn feet of peace can still be traced clearly in His steps.

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier. -Mother Theresa The name of Mother Theresa has always been familiar to me. I knew she was a do-gooder and a giving follower of God, but knew nothing beyond that. I began wondering, Who is this woman, what did she do, and why did she do it? Upon digging deeper into her history, life, and ministry, I found myself inspired, forever changed, and challenged by Mother Theresa. A native of Macedonia, Mother Theresa grew up under the anointing of God. From the age of 12, she felt the call of God on her life, believing the best way to spread the love of Christ was to give her life to full-time mission work. At the age of 17 she responded to Gods call on her life and thus began the journey that would forever change the course of her life and the world.1 Initially, Mother Theresa joined a convent of nuns where she was a teacher, however, the poverty stricken slums of Calcutta were calling her name. So, in faith, she devoted her life to helping the poor and needy by starting a school whose students would be the children of the slums she served among. Last week I had the privilege of participating in a songwriting event unlike anything Ive ever done before. It all started about 18 months ago when Martin Smith, front man for Delirious, had a vision to start a charity that would be a vehicle for artistic works to be donated to the worlds poor. About a year ago, twelve songwriters enthusiastically agreed to be part of songwriting and recording project that would be 100% given away. The list of writers: Paul Baloche, Steven Curtis Chapman, Stu Garrard, Delirious, Israel Houghton, Tim Hughes, Graham Kendrick, Matt Redman, Martin Smith, Michael W. Smith, Darlene Zschech and me. For the six weeks prior to the event, I worked on a bunch of my half-finished songs. I brought some of those to the table last week and it was really fun to see how things evolved. We ended the week with 20 songs that we quickly recorded as demos on site. Establishing friendships with the other writers was a huge highlight of our time.

In addition to the songwriters waiving their rights to these songs, the publishers, managers, copyright institutes and agents involved are all donating their efforts on this project to Compassionart, a charity based in Littlehampton, England that is dedicated to seeing works of art generate income for the poorest of the poor. One half of the monies received over the songs lifetimes will go to the songwriters charity of choice, and the other 50% will go to a charitable project agreed upon by all the songwriters involved, which is still being discussed. 2008 Andy Park

What In The World Is The Gospel? There are so many ideas out there about what the Gospel is and is not that I thought it wise to spend a little time on the vital subject of The Essential Nature of the Gospel---ie what makes the Gospel the Gospel and not something else. If we are confused on this point we will do violence to the truth of God and rob our message of the very power of God unto salvation. Over these next few weeks, by Gods grace, we will consider this matter. The Gospel is about a Person--Jesus Christ The Gospel is Gods good news about Himself in the person of His Son. In other words, the Gospel is all about the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15; Romans 1:1-3). Well of course we all say amen to that, but, if the Gospel is about Jesus, we need to realize then it is not about you and it is not about me! ------ Ill say it again, It is not about you and it is not about me! It is not about Jesus coming into our hearts and making us new; it is neither about our spiritual growth nor our spiritual development. Since the Gospel puts the Lord Jesus Christ firmly at center stage, the believer, his progress and welfare, are not its focus. In

Grace of God
holiness. The Gospel however is about the doing and dying of Christ and His accomplishments on behalf of God and sinners.Yes it is true that the Gospel only really makes sense when the Holiness of God and the horrors of sin are understood, but the holiness of God and the horrors of sin are, strictly speaking, not the Gospel. The Holiness of God will lead us to repent, the power of God will regenerate us and the love of God will melt our hearts, but our repentance, regeneration and melting of heart are the result of the Gospel and not the Gospel itself! Lets say it again, the Gospel is not about you, it is not about me and its not about the sinner. The Gospel is about Jesus Christ! Since the Gospel is about Jesus, the Gospel therefore is not about the Father! The God of the Bible is One God; yet, although He is One, He is revealed as triune. We know him as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The one triune God had full involvement with the Gospel but the Gospel is Concerning His Son. (Romans 1:3). The Gospel is, therefore, not centered on the Father. Of course the Father is vitally involved in the Gospel since He planned it and unfolded His purposes through His Son but the Gospel is about the person, doing, dying and resurrection of

the Gospel, the spotlight is upon Jesus, not the believer. Of course we believers enjoy the benefits of the Gospel, or as the old timers called them Gospel Mercies such as acquittal from all charges of sin and of course, because of the Gospel we can have the wonderful new life in Christ. But the Gospel is not about our new life or what we are doing or about how saved we are, The Gospel is about the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ and all that He has accomplished on our behalf in history. Although Christ perfectly represented us as our substitute in His life, death, burial and resurrection and although, as he lived, He lived for us and even though when He died He died for us, the Gospel is not about us. The Gospel is primarily the good news of that which Christ Jesus has done and accomplished in time and history. It is not about the mercies we receive as a result of the Gospel. Christ Jesus and His finished work are the center of the Gospel, not His people and not how we benefit from his work. Since the Gospel is about Jesus, the Gospel is, therefore, not about the sinner. Of course Jesus died for sinners but the Gospel is not sinner centered it is Christ centered. The Gospel is not about the horror of sin or the penalty that sinners will pay for sin. The Gospel is neither about Gods hatred of sin nor His

Avalon is a new name in guitars but one with an established history and quality heritage. The company that now bears the name Avalon Guitars came into being in the 1980s as the Lowden Guitar Company. Through the years, the companys reputation for producing the very highest quality acoustic guitars was widely acknowledged, although production remained small. The highly skilled team of craftsmen also grew in stature as their experience and know-how developed. Avalon guitars are all about their contribution to the acoustic guitar world and their statement about acoustic guitar design, quality and above all, tone. The very heart and pure anatomy of todays Avalon guitar is bred from many years of traditional craftsmanship and love for guitar music. Discovering an Avalon guitar is like finding a long-lost friend; from the moment you meet it feels immediately, comfortable, reliable and truly rewarding; developing a bond and trust which is consistent and always inspirational.

Christ the Son. It is true that the Son is the visible representation of the Father and that He perfectly reveals Him and His heart of justice and love but the Gospel is the good news of the Christ event. In this event, the Gospel, God clothed Himself with humanity, invaded time and space and came to earth to live and die for us in the person of the Son.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is already the Full Gospel. The work of the Holy Spirit therefore can neither qualify as the Gospel nor the Full Gospel. The Spirits work is an entirely different work altogether. The Holy Spirit works within us but, in the Gospel, Christ has performed and accomplished His saving work outside of and apart from us.

Since the Gospel is about The Son then we must also conclude that And thats the Gospel Truth! the Gospel is not about the Holy Spirit. Grace Alone But of course the Holy Spirit was actively involved in the Gospel. Jesus was pre-eminently the man of the Spirit. He told His listeners, The Spirit of the lord is upon me (Luke 4:18): The Spirit led him to the wilderness (Luke 4:1): He was conceived by the Spirit (Luke 1:35) and of course He offered himself to God through the eternal Spirit (Hebrews 9:13). But the Gospel is about Christ Jesus and His saving acts on our behalf and not about the present day work of the Holy Spirit. There are many who hold that the Gospel is about the cross while the Full Gospel is about the Holy Spirit and His power in the lives of the believer: but heres the rub, the Gospel of Christ is already full. It is a finished and completed work which is in no respects deficient or lacking. Theres nothing that can be added to it, it lacks nothing, needs nothing and is deficient in nothing.

LIVING SONGS Something new happened during worship on Shabbat. I brought a lead sheet for a new song Id recently written and after we sang it, I was about to continue with the songs I had already chosen for the service, when the Holy Spirit directed me to sing a partially written song above the new one. But L-rd, Ive only written the chorus. Sing it and invite everyone to help you write the verses. Everyone has a new song inside waiting to come out. I sensed the L-rd was saying to forget the song list, which I have often done. But this was something new for me - to launch into a skeleton of a song. As I began to sing, the congregation joined in. People opened their Bibles and sang what was in their hearts. People who normally never sing out, sang out. The skeleton stood up and came to life just like in Ezekiel 37. It was really quite incredible. The words were from Jeremiah 20:9b: His word is in my heart; His word is in my heart. Like a fire in my bones; His word is in my heart. You can find the music to this song by contacting Carolyn for the leadsheet. Please enter the CCLI number if you use it. www.heartofg-d.org Blessings, Melissa Saulnier President of Oikeo Music Inc Jerusalem Conference Here are a few snippets of what the speakers had to say. We may not agree with all the politicians, brigadier generals and rabbis who spoke. The prevailing thought, however, among the speakers was that we are on the brink of a major disaster. Scotland Taking the clan to Scotland

Taking the clan to Scotland! This July the Kilpatrick family of the Colquhoun clan of the Scots will return to the land of their forebears. For two weeks well go from Inverness to Edinburgh singing & preaching. My four sons and one daughter have put together a band that will play in and out of churches in any and every pub, street corner and park thatll have em. Weve even recorded a CD of them! My daughters-in-law have prepared a childrens teaching curriculum and will be ministering to the Scottish children. Of course, the patriarch (thats me!) will be singing and speaking as well.

This will be my third trip to Scotland in two years. I have noticed two things that have given this trip with my family added significance. First, the churches of Scotland are empty. Since the revivals of John Knox, the churches have failed to capture the publics need for spiritual nurture. Many of the churches have been sold and converted into dance clubs and taverns! The other thing I noticed is that the Scottish families are in need of a recentering. Just as in America, divorce and non-commitment are rampant. Children are born into families without love or a sense of a spiritual heritage. Having my family there before them will be a powerful picture of what a family can do when they stand together for God. Give to the trip to Scotland: Would you like to be an honorary member of the Kilpatrick family of the Colquhoun clan of the Scots and stand with us

donations and the occasional community grant. The staff are all volunteers. About a third of our clients are senior citizens living on fixed incomes. As one 70-some year-old woman told me, I get to choose: do I pay my rent, buy my medicines, or eat? A handful work part-time jobs, but many have physical disabilities which compound their financial challenges and prohibit employment. Another half of our clients are immigrants to the United States. Some of these families are regulars in that the salaries they make from their multiple low-wage jobs fail to cover the expenses of housing, transportation, and other bills. Some just need a helping hand for the short term. When Anchorage experienced an influx of Hmong families relocated from refugee camps in Thailand, many settled in our neighborhood and discovered our food bank. Within a few months, however, most of these families had found jobs and no longer needed our assistance. The remainder of our clients is a hodgepodge of single-parent families, seasonal workers, homeless people, and men and women addicted to alcohol. Whatever their demographic, each of these individuals is a beloved child of God. Some are living near to Him; others have wandered far. Regardless, one of the goals of our food bank is to treat every client with dignity and respect. Part of this involves attending not only to the physical needs of our guests, but also to their spiritual needs. We pray with and for those who come, and try to followup on the requests they bring. Several of our clients have commented on how they feel genuinely cared for by our staff. * * *

The scene unfolding before me hardly seemed worshipful. A group of three, two men, one woman approached my table. They bore the tell-tale signs of homelessness: unkempt hair, multiple layers of shabby clothing, the distinctive aroma that comes from hit-and-miss showering. The taller male spoke. I hear this is where we can get food. This is your first time here? I observed, feeling fairly confident it was. I could identify most of our food bank clients faces, and to the best of my recollection, I hadnt met these three. Yeah. I handed them each a clipboard with some papers and a pen attached. Please complete the front side of this registration sheet and return it to me when youre done. They sat nearby and I returned to the paperwork scattered on the table in front of me. The ringleader of the threesome provided running commentary as he wrote. I tried not to pay too

much attention to their conversation, but tuned in when he reached the question that asked, Do you have a church you attend? Church? he queried. Does the Brown Jug count? * * *

My church, Anchorage Free Methodist, started a monthly food bank in our facility almost six years ago. At that time, we were the only food distribution site serving Russian Jack, one of the poorest communities in Anchorage. We started with a dozen clients, but within two years, maxed out at 97. Currently we serve an average of 60 families a month. We purchase most of our nonperishable items from the Food Bank of Alaska warehouse, the clearinghouse for food drives held throughout Anchorage. In order to cover their operating expenses, they charge us (and other distribution sites) an eighteen-cent-per-pound service fee. Bread, produce, dairy, and other miscellaneous items come primarily from twice-weekly gleanings at a nearby Carrs store. Clients pay nothing for the food they receive; our food bank is funded by private 21 Front Yard Worship

Jesus makes an intriguing comment in Matthew 25. He was discussing the Final Judgment with His disciples, and told how at that time, the Son of Man would divide

the people into two categories. On one side He would put the goats, described as those who neglected others who were hungry, thirsty, homeless, naked, sick and imprisoned. On the other would be the sheep, individuals who cared for the less fortunate. The sheep received an eternal reward for their compassion, while the goats warranted eternal punishment. In the midst of this teaching, Jesus notes, Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. (25:40). The King of the universe is fed when the hungry receive food. The God of Heaven drinks when we share a cup of water with the thirsty. When we house the homeless, clothe the naked, tend the sick and visit the imprisoned, we are ministering to the Lord Himself. Isnt this worship?

My youngest son was born premature and spent eleven days in the NICU. Late one night I went to check on him. His nurse had taken her paperwork to his bassinet, and was filling it out while snuggling with him on her shoulder. She didnt need to do this. She could have stayed at her desk. Yet she chose to go the extra mile to nurture my baby. This made me feel nurtured. Because of my love for my son, acts of kindness toward him affected me. When we care for one of Gods beloved children its as if we are caring for the Father Himself. Even though this sort of compassionate ministry doesnt always feel as worshipful as Sunday morning, its every bit as meaningful. We are reaching the least of the brothers and sisters even those who now worship at the Church of the Brown Jug.

Pastors Perspective
Success In Ministry BY Jack Aiken
Every pastor, evangelist, singer, songwriter and author wants to succeed in their ministry, but all too often we have a view of success that is more related to the worlds value system than to Gods. When I entered the pastoral ministry over 20 years ago I had a distorted view of what success in ministry would mean. I dreamed of being a rising pastoral star, leading a burgeoning congregation, while remaining the humble servant who would, of course, give all the glory to God. What a bunch of egotistical nonsense that dream turned out to be! Thankfully, none of these egodriven fantasies have came true, and as time has passed, I have come to a clearer understanding of what Gods priorities are for His ministers and how He defines success. First, Gods priority for His ministers is not the pursuit of a ministry, or even worse, the pursuit of success in a ministry. God wants us to seek Him. Our first order of business must be to know God and develop a deep intimacy with Him. Jesus said Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. We generally apply this principle to the necessity of pursuing the spiritual aspects of life in preference to the material, however, this principle applies to ministry as well. Paraphrasing the scripture we could say, Seek first the God of the ministry, and the ministry of God will be given to you, as He wills. Seeking success in ministry, or through ministry, without seeking God as a matter of first priority, has lead many a minister, prominent or not, to disaster through pride. When ministry success comes faster than the development of the ministers character, disaster is inevitable. Second, God defines success as faithfulness. The most important byproduct of knowing Gods nature and character is that the seeker will also begin to know Gods will as it specifically applies to himself. Every Christian has some understanding of Gods will for world evangelism and discipleship of believers, but what is not always clear is the individuals specific role in Gods master plan. However, God is more anxious to reveal His will to us than we are to have it revealed. God wants us to know what He desires of us, and we can know by the simple expedient of asking Him. The main reason we dont hear Gods answer is because we have already predetermined what the answer must be. In order to know Gods will, we must be open to all possibilities. No one will ever be successful in Gods eyes without knowing and doing His will. Everyone who is faithful to obey will be considered successful, even if such obedience holds the minister in a place of obscurity rather than thrusting him upon the world stage. In Gods eyes, both are equally successful and the heavenly reward will be exactly the same: Well done you good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of your Lord. God rewards obedience, not prominence. Third, I have come to realize that a ministers greatest impact or success in the ministry, may not be a direct result of his own efforts, but through the ministry of those he has empowered for ministry. It is a good thing to encourage someone to seek God and wait on Him to open doors for them, but if you are already established in a ministry, God may be looking to you to open the door of ministry to others. I am in ministry today because someone recognized the gifts and callings of God in my life, and encouraged me to develop them. This encourager became my mentor, giving me many significant opportunities to exercise my gifts while they were yet immature and undeveloped. The greatest accomplishment of John the Baptist was the introduction of Jesus to the Jewish people. Jesus raised up a cadre of disciples whom He prophesied would do even greater things than He had done. Barnabas stands as a shining example of one who recognized and promoted the gifts and calling of another. Paul, the apostle, did not come into prominence in the church until Barnabas, responding to the leading of the Holy Spirit, sought him out, and brought him to Antioch from his hometown of Tarsus. Over time, Barnabas slipped into obscurity, while Paul became the greatest Christian missionary-evangelist and teacher the world has ever known. Paul, in turn, raised up a legion of other ministers to share and carry on his work. None of these mentors viewed those God called alongside as competitors. They recognized them as the means by which God would enable their own work to be expanded. If we who currently hold the reins of ministry could take the same attitude, we would realize that our greatest potential for success may lie in the raising up of others to share the ministry we now hold. Those we mentor should never be viewed as competition, but as continuation. To sum it all up, successful ministry always comes out of intimacy with God. Faithful obedience to the will of God is Gods ultimate definition of success. The will of God will almost always include investing freely in the ministry of others.

Background Keyboards Often the team leader in an attempt to be sensitive to this issue asks the keyboardist or guitar player to play one or two chords. But those one or two chords go on and on forever and without a certain skill level they become an irritation in the background. I want to say in no uncertain terms that I believe the move of God is halted during these times when a specific area of spiritual musicianship and gifting is in the hands of the wrong musician. Truly anointed music doesnt make anyone uncomfortable. Usually when a keyboard player has an anointing in this area it simply causes the listener to pay closer attention to what is being said by the speaker. When music is anointed it joins with the speaker and becomes one with the move of God. This is when healing and spiritual issues are coming to the surface and being dealt with through the power of the Holy Spirit. I want to say again that your keyboardist or guitarist may not be gifted in this particular area. It is ok to admit this may be a problem area for your worship team. It is ok to work on finding other ways to deal with it. Maybe silence behind the speaker is better than trying to play anything. In our society where we feel like we have to have constant input and output

Have you ever experienced a powerful move of God on a Sunday morning? The Holy Spirit is so real, so tangible and you drink it in. What a beautiful thing....that is until the keyboard or guitar player begins to play background music behind the moment. Suddenly whatever was happening in the spiritual realm comes to a screeching halt and an uncomfortable rustle begins to happen across the congregation. So what just happened? Do you feel as I do, that not everyone has the ability to play their instrument during those times with the ability to accentuate what is happening? Some might say, Well Maybell has been doing this for 27 years and I just dont feel right about telling her to stop. Did you know that you are

setting your pastor or worship leader up for failure with this kind of thinking? You are knowingly and intentionally allowing someone who is not gifted to crush the flow of the Holy Spirit. May I be so bold as to say that playing background instrumental during prayer or times when the presence of God is moving outside the regular songs is a totally different skill and anointing? Unfortunately, many of our keyboardists and guitarists have been set up or framed so to speak. It seems logical to allow the keyboardist or guitarist who is on the team any given Sunday to fill this area. Many times the entire band will plow through the presence of God completely dissolving any opportunity for Gods power to reveal itself.

a little silence and quiet is called Of all the musicians Ive ever for. known who have this particular However, if you have a person on gift, they are the ones who spend your team, whether it be a simple time alone with God worshiping on flute player who has this gift, by all their instrument, just like David did means use it in an appropriate way. when he was communicating with If they are truly gifted you will know God out in the fields with his sheep. it and feel it.You will see the results I picture the sheep coming around in the response to the speaker. The David as he played quietly next to congregation will not be watching a tree watching the sheep graze. I the musician, they will be listening bet they wanted to listen to it too. to the words that are coming from I bet David could play a couple of the worship leader or pastor in rapt attention because that is what the true gift of background music does.

from happening because of a jealous or competitive spirit. You will single handedly keep the very spirit you are pursuing from ever coming about in your church and I believe this hinderance has happened often in our churches. I want to encourage you as a worship pastor that if you have a musician on your worship team with this gift, that you give every opportunity for music to flow out of them, even if it means they do it alone without the rest of the team. It is time for us to be realistic about what we can and cannot do as artists and musicians. Instead of trying to keep them in their place so to speak, let them out of the box so that they can do what God has given them to do. You may begin to see all kinds of amazing things happen if this is their anointing. Let me say again...if someone has this gift it NEVER distracts but always points the listener to God and the words being spoken. There will be a sensitivity in the air that cannot be written out on a sheet of music. It cannot be copied by someone without the gift. It is unique and meant to be used with reverence, and integrity. May the healing presence of God begin to flow in your church and through your worship teams. Melissa Saulnier

We now know in our present culture that music causes children to learn better. Weve all been able to admit that the atmosphere can change in a room depending on what kind of music is being played or listended to.Lets recall David as he sat and played for the spiritually tormented Saul. Demons fled during this kind of music. I believe this gift is coming back to our worship, however, we must be aware of what has been missing. If God wants to heal during these times thats a serious thing. If God is opening the heart of a hardened soul, that is a serious thing. If God is wanting to use a certain gift like David had to cause demons to flee that is a serious thing. May I implore you as a worship leader or musician to hear these words and take it seriously.

notes on his harp and the sheep would respond by gathering around him. Music is so powerful. This kind of power does two things, it draws a willing heart towards God and it draws a jealous heart into a rage. Those who do not understand the gift in this area can be jealous. Ive known worship pastors who wouldnt allow certain gifted musicians to play during this time because they felt it was competition. Let me get this off my chest..... there is NO room for competition in the body of Christ! Did you read that? Let me say this again....There is NO room for competition in the body of Christ, period. Do not say that you want God to be revealed and his glory to come to the church if you are hindering that very thing

on traditional radio stations. having decoding equipment in homes, the latter also enables subscription-based channels and pay-per-view services.

Internet radio (also known as web radio, net radio, streaming radio and e-radio) is an audio broadcasting service transmitted via the Internet. Broadcasting on the Internet is usually referred to as webcasting since it is not transmitted broadly through wireless means. Internet radio involves a streaming medium that presents listeners with a continuous stream of audio over which they have no control, much like traditional broadcast media; in this respect, it is distinct from on-demand file serving. Internet radio is also distinct from podcasting, which involves downloading rather than streaming. Many Internet radio stations are associated with a corresponding traditional (or terrestrial) radio station or radio network. Internet-only radio stations are independent of such associations. Internet radio services are usually accessible from anywhere in the worldfor example, one could listen to an Australian station from Europe or America. Some major networks like Clear Channel in the US and Chrysalis in the UK restrict listening to in country because of music licensing and advertising concerns.[citation needed] Internet radio remains popular among expatriates and listeners with interests that are often not adequately served by local radio stations (such as progressive rock, ambient music, folk music, classical music, and stand-up comedy). What Is Broadcasting? Broadcasting is the distribution of audio and/or video signals which transmit programs to an audience. The audience may be the general public or a relatively large sub-audience, such as children or young adults. There are wide variety of broadcasting systems, all of which have different capabilities. The largest broadcasting systems are institutional public address systems, which transmit nonverbal messages and music within a school or hospital, and low-powered broadcasting systems which transmit radio stations or television stations to a small area. National radio and television broadcasters have nationwide coverage, using retransmitter towers, satellite systems, and cable distribution. Satellite radio and television broadcasters can cover even wider areas, such as entire continents, and Internet channels can distribute text or streamed music worldwide. Any person can also broadcast sound or video through podcasting or live through internet broadcasting services. The sequencing of content in a broadcast is called a schedule. As with all technological endeavors, a number of technical terms and slang have developed. A list of these terms can be found at list of broadcasting terms. Television and radio programs are distributed through radio broadcasting or cable, often both simultaneously. By coding signals and 28 Front Yard Worship What Is Webcasting? A webcast is a media file distributed over the Internet using streaming media technology. As a broadcast may either be live or recorded, similarly, a webcast may either be distributed live or recorded. Essentially, webcasting is broadcasting over the Internet. The generally accepted use of the term webcast is the transmission of linear audio or video content over the Internet. A webcast uses streaming media technology to take a single content source and distribute it to many simultaneous listeners/viewers. The largest webcasters include existing radio and TV stations who simulcast their output, as well as a multitude of Internet only stations. The term webcasting is usually reserved for referring to non-interactive linear streams or events. Rights and licensing bodies offer specific webcasting licenses to those wishing to carry out Internet broadcasting using copyright material. Webcasting is also used extensively in the commercial sector for investor relations presentations (such as Annual General Meetings), in E-learning (to transmit seminars), and for related communications activities. However, webcasting does not bear much, if any, relationship to the idea of web conferencing which is designed for many-to-many interaction.

The ability to webcast using cheap/accessible technology has allowed independent media to flourish. There are many notable independent shows that broadcast regularly online. Often produced by average citizens in their homes they cover many interests and topics; from the mundane to the bizarre. Webcasts relating to computers, technology, and news are particularly popular and many new shows are added regularly.

Help for your Music Dept.

At Christ Church, we've been using music from iClub since our first service last June. With around 15 people, we don't have any musicians, so we rely heavily upon good music to worship with during our services. Basically, we worship to soundtracks by putting together a playlist in iTunes. At first, we were very self conscious about that, but we realized that if most clubs around town were dancing and partying to a DJ's records, then we could worship to soundtracks. We jokingly tell people we have "world class" musicians lead our services. Quite frankly, it has worked very effectively for us, and now that we're used to it, we can tell very little difference in the worship between our service and others with live music. iClub has been a tremendous resource for us because of all the options that it provides. Whenever a new song comes out, I download the music-only version to use during our welcome, prayer and offering, and just before the preaching. We download the full demo for worship, and the split track for our altar calls. We take the lead sheets and/or transparency downloads and use them to project the words in Keynote (the Mac version of PowerPoint). We've created four playlists for our service. 1. Pre-Service: song for prayer and to create the atmosphere. 2. Worship Service 3. Altar Service: we have several songs styles depending on mood leading into altar 4. Last Service: this is an archive of what songs we've recently used Our typical playlist for worship service looks like this: 1. Intro/Welcome: I Want to Praise You-Music Only 2. I Want to Praise You-Demo 3. Dance Before You-Demo 4. Prayer: Dance Before You-Music Only 5. Offering: Rain Lord-Music Only 6. Rain Lord-Demo 7. Preaching Into: Rain Lord-Music Only (fade out) Basically, we hit play and let'er go. We have a portable PA system we got from David Hutton in Asheboro, and we run the output into our soundboard. There have even been times, that without a computer, we've simply run it from an iPod, and it has worked just as well. I guess I said all that to say, "Thank you." Commit To Meeting
Chapter 4 Group meetings are the place where brain storming goals, purpose and strategies are formed and developed. Even though we are a nation that communicates via e-mail, faxes and other machines, personal relationships are more vital than ever and we have found that group meetings are very important in the development process of our writers. When you think about it, personal relationships are the backbone of Christianity. Jesus first calls us to a personal relationship with Him, and then with others. A guild can be the place where love, strength, encouragement, hope, support and community can be found and nurtured, if we allow it. These choices determine whether our meetings are a place for creativity to spawn or where dreams, talents and ideas die out. We all have dreams and hopes which help us relate to each other as songwriters. One of the things that we have found as our guild has grown is that weaknesses are strengthened by the skills of others within our group. On many occasion we have found ourselves receiving help and support from our guild members. Dividing the meetings into categories can be helpful. We must evaluate the needs of our group and provide meetings that help us fulfill our purpose. One meeting can be for discussing goals and direction, where another meeting can provide the collaborating and song writing efforts a place to grow. It is difficult to do both in one meeting. Discussing what we are going to do as a team can be very exciting, but we rarely are able to write any music at one of these meetings. There simply is not enough time to do both justice. This also serves as a non- threatening way to weed out individuals who may be enamoured with the idea of song writing, but unwilling to dedicate themselves to the work of crafting their songs. A serious writer will more than likely be willing to sacrifice energy and time for the sake of crafting their songs and usually those who arent serious find it more than they bargained for. Assuming that two meetings a month would be the model you want to use for you guild meetings, the first meeting should be a fun evening of open mic sharing of original music. There is an energy that happens when people are allowed to share their songs. This is also the place where fellowship and relationship happen. We are able to tell the stories be31 Front Yard Worship

hind our songs uninterrupted and given the respect of the listening ears of others. This is a great opportunity to draw on the skills of those in our group, whether a piano player, guitarist, vocalist or other instrumentalist. This is also a place where you may find yourself networking with people you never dreamed youd have a chance to work with. It can be adventurous and risky, but incredibly fun and rewarding. The second monthly meeting should be designed with the intent of providing a space and opportunity for learning about song writing skills and crafting together. This is also a good time to plan any events or concerts you may have in your future. So....decide what day or evening you will meet and begin to strategize together. What a joy!

CFG Classroom III. How to Draft a Proposal Budget Project Budget Overhead Costs Accuracy is Critical After Approval This class provides basic information to assist you in developing your proposal budget. The course covers issues such as overhead and administrative costs, employee fringe benefits, and fixed costs. This class will provide you with the knowledge necessary to develop a project budget. If you are a beginner, you may benefit from first taking the Proposal Writing Course. Upon completion of this course, you should know:

1.

The standard parts of a project budget 2. Which financial documents are often required 3. How to incorporate overhead costs and fringe benefits into the budget Project Budget The project budget is an integral, and often complex, part of the proposal. It may come as a surprise that some grantmakers will not read your proposal straight through. Rather, they will skip to a specific section. That section is often the budget. As its name implies, a project budget is a financial estimate for a project which requires funding. This document consists of two broad categories: anticipated expenses and earned

income you expect to generate. A complete, easily understood budget greatly enhances a proposal. The budget content and format is often dependent on the grantmakers guidelines. Unless your organization has an inhouse accountant, you may wonder who is qualified to prepare the project budget. Consider the following factors in selecting the budget preparer: 1. How well does the person understand the project? 2. Is the individual financially astute? 3. Is the person knowledgeable of the organization? In some cases, the budget may best be done as a joint project. Perhaps the organizations financial expert knows very little about the project. She can help the project director, who may have little knowledge of finance, but a thorough understanding of the project. It is always wise to have another individual carefully read the budget before submission. For all but the simplest budgets, it is prudent to prepare an expense worksheet prior to beginning your budget. Brainstorm all conceivable expenses you will incur if the project is executed. Then divide these expenses into two categories: personnel and nonpersonnel. Personnel expenses include people costs, including employees, consultants, and independent contractors. Non-personnel expenses

include goods and services (where you are paying for something to be done, rather than employing a person to do something). Be specific for each item. What is it? What is the cost? Summarize how you arrived at each number. If you use an Other category, keep the amount small, or provide an explanation. For example: the airfare to China, referenced above, may be significantly higher by May. Be sure to keep detailed records of how you arrived at your numbers. These provide essential reminders when you are writing the proposal or discussing it with funders. If your project has already received support (or support pledges) from other sources, this information should be revealed in a support and revenue statement. The amount of support already received should then be deducted from the total expenses. Any anticipated revenue from the project should be deducted as well. The remaining amount should be the maximum amount requested of the grantmaker. If you submit multiple proposals synonymously, it is wise to indicate this in your proposal. For example, you can state, In addition to your foundation, this proposal is being submitted to Foundation A and Foundation D or We have already received a grant of $12,000 from Foundation A, and are requesting the remainder from you. Overhead Costs Some grantmakers ask that overhead expenses be included in the project budget. These expenses, or indirect costs, are the fixed administrative costs of an organizations daily operation. Examples include utilities, rent, and sometimes depreciation. Thus, an organization that rents a building for $1,000/month, and plans to use 50% of the building for a 6 month project, may include a rent expense of $3,000.

A formula, based on a ratio of the organizations overhead costs to its total program expenses, is generally used to estimate overhead costs. Example: Each year Charity A, a nonprofit organization, spends $500,000 on its programs, and incurs $100,000 in overhead costs. What is the overhead rate? $100,000 / $500.000 = .20 The overhead rate is 20%, which means that for every dollar the organization spends on its programs, 20 cents is expended for overhead. This calculation is then used to estimate the overhead for a particular project. If a project is $1,000 (without overhead costs), then the overhead costs estimate is $200. It is critical to check the grantmakers guidelines for information on overhead expenses, because preferences vary widely. Employee Benefits (Including Payroll Taxes) Employee benefits and payroll taxes must be included as part of personnel costs. Thus, if an employee will spend 30% of his time on the project, 30% of his payroll taxes and benefits must be included in the personnel section of the budget. This includes social security and medicare taxes paid by the organization, health insurance, and disability insurance. To simplify things, you may determine the organizations

total cost (in this category), and divide by the total payroll to arrive at the benefit rate (percentage). Then proceed as with overhead costs. A budget narrative is used to clarify items in the budget, and may be helpful to the grantmaker. The narrative may be a completely separate text that follows the budget one section at a time. In most cases, however, simple footnotingwhere appropriate-is sufficient. Accuracy is Critical Although it has already been said, it is worth repeating: Project your expenses as accurately as possible. Significantly over- or under-estimating can have negative consequences. Take inflation and cost increases into consideration. If there is no way of knowing how much something will cost, clearly state this. Do not guess. Funders do not expect perfection, but they certainly will remember a budget that is sloppy or way out of line. Financial Statements Grantmakers may require financial statements, in addition to the expense budget for your projects costs. Common requests include: (1) A copy of your IRS letter declaring your organization tax exempt. If your organization is not tax exempt, you may need to apply through a fiscal agent. In that case, send a copy of your fiscal

God Cares About Art

He wants to use that. God does not operate without purpose and He does not make a mistake. It would be sad if King David believed that in the business of leading a nation art should be placed on the back burner. I love the Psalms and I am glad that David made space for his artistic expression. I do not know the business of your life, but I assume it is much like the business of mine. If we decide that what God put in us is not important, we rob each other of the richness in the body of Christ that God intended for us. I am encouraging you to pursue the gifts that God has placed in you. My family will need the legacy God will establish through you.Your family needs what God has put in me. Artists rise up. Take back what has been stolen from you. Repent and call on God for wisdom and strength. If God has made you an artist, do not budge and pretend to be something you are not. God made you and He does

for being moody, and melancholy! Our sensitivity is a great tool in the hands of God, but it means that we are vulnerable to wounding. Most of us are carrying wounds that we need Jesus to heal. Most of us at one time or another swallowed that lie that art is not essential. A poor life choice and really kind of silly. That is a lie. I will tell you again, that is a lie. If God has put in you that you need to create, that talent for beauty, that longing for the truth to be revealed in a tangible expression.... 34 Front Yard Worship

Hi, my name is Rich Irwin. Im a ministry leader at Anchorage City Church and these are encouraging words for Artists. Dont budge. God has no turning. God is not a man that He should lie. God is faithful, even when I am faithless. God is faithful and just to complete the work He started in me. That means that the gifts, talents, and visions He has given you are important. We may know that in our head, but often we do not believe that in our heart. We artsy people are notorious

Cont from pg 33 agents IRS letter. (2) The most recent financial statement, including a statement of income and expenses and a balance sheet showing assets and liabilities at the end of the year. Some funders ask for an audited statement. If you are too small to be audited, call and ask whether an audited statement is mandatory or just preferred. (3) A budget for your current fiscal year. If you are well into the fiscal year, show actual year-to-date income and expenses next to the budget projections. Include a budget for the next fiscal year if you are within three months of the new fiscal year. Note: If you are a small part of a very large institution, you may be better off submitting only supplementary materials for your program. Ask the funder what you should do. Grantmakers may ask for other materials, such as a copy of your most recent IRS Form 990. If you do not have some of the requested materials, attach a note explaining why. After Approval Some grantmakers expect an accounting upon completion of the project. In such cases, careful records documenting actual expenses must be kept. Some funders may require an explanation for significant variations from the budget. To summarize, the project budget is a document that will remain with you for the duration of the project, and perhaps beyond. Preparing it accurately, and presenting it as a well-organized component of the proposal may be essential for fundraising success. You have successfully completed the Proposal Budgeting online course! There are numerous resources on the internet that will be helpful in drafting a budget.
