Session 1 -- Leadership Styles -- January 28th

VonBank

This session we will start talking about different styles of leadership. After some initial housekeeping and syllabus work, we will be spending some time in the computer lab taking a leadership style assessment and sharing the results. We will also begin doing preliminary work on finding a leadership exemplar to study for next class. Class: Icebreaker Syllabus Lab Time: http://www.yourleadershiplegacy.com/assessment/assessment.php Connection: Sharing your style Lab Time: Research and decide upon a great leader Videos and responses. View all of the video clips on the discussion thread, and comment on each. Be sure to return to the discussion and comment on others comments. Post once and respond at least twice. Complete analysis of leadership exemplar chosen in class. Select a famous leader, alive or dead, that you can research over the next few weeks. You may create a slide show or write a paper (2-4 pages) to highlight your selected leader. You will present your leader in small groups next session for 5-10 minutes. In addition to a brief background on the person in question, please highlight the persons particular skill set as you see it.

Some guiding questions (these can be addressed in any way necessary): 1. What particular qualities or skill sets does this person have in regard to leadership? How is this evidenced in your research? 2. What learning experiences has the leader identified? How did this shape them as their leadership ability improved? 3. What outside influences aided this leaders success? Time? Friends? Education? Luck? Political climate? What outside forces worked against them? 4. If you boiled down the essence of this persons leadership ability into a few particular quotes, pieces of advice, or lessons, what would be most relevant? How can we put them into practice?

Session 2 -- Leadership Exemplars -- February 11

VonBank

This session will focus on what makes great leaders great. We will be sharing the leadership exemplars everyone studied, and then try to isolate individual skills, characteristics, and habits that tend toward great leadership. We will also examine how concepts like luck, political climate, and other outside factors influence leadership. Due: Class: Exemplar Paper / Presentation Due (D2L and bring to class) Present Leadership Exemplars: Small groups Build Common Qualities Matrix Examine outside factors to leadership Discussion TBD Complete Covey reading and prepare three micro-lectures. Think of three relevant points or lessons from the book you felt you connected most to, and prepare a one-minute lecture on each of them. We will use these micro-lectures to better understand the text next session. These can be aided by a note card or sticky, but should not be formally written out as a speech.

Session 3 -- Leadership Principles -- March 24 This session will focus on the values, principles, and ethics that guide great leadership. We will take a close look at Stephen Coveys Principle-Centered Leadership, and determine those principles that guide our own concepts of leadership. Due: Class: Read Principle-Centered Leadership Discussion of Book Draft Personal Leadership Principles Present specs for Interview Paper Bring panel questions for next time. Discussion TBD Interview a current leader. The paper due next week is to be an analysis of an interview you conduct with a leader you feel is successful in the role they currently hold. The interview can be in person, on the phone, or via Skype, but cannot be of a written/survey format. Ideally, the subject of your interview is someone whose daily responsibility is primarily leadership. The interview should be scheduled for at least 20 minutes, although you may arrange more time as appropriate. Try to have questions prepared before the interview which go beyond describing the role itself but rather probe for the actual skills and necessities the person identifies as important to their success in leadership.

The outline of this paper should be similar to the following: I. Introduction of the subject, background, basic information (time, place) II. Personal skills or abilities the subject identified III. Decisions and drawbacks the subject identified as learning experiences IV. Your personal observations and attitudes about the subject after the interview V. The connection of what you heard/learned from your subject to your own practice Length is flexible, but should be 3-5 pages or more (double-spaced). No interview citation necessary but any background literature or information referenced should be cited.

Session 4 -- Leadership in Action -- April 7

VonBank

This session will be dedicated to looking at what real leaders do, and what real leaders do to improve their ability to lead. We will share some of the personal connections we made in the previous few weeks, and meet a few leaders who will share some of their insight and experience with us. Due: Class: Interview Paper (D2L and bring to class) Interview paper informal report out Build questions for panel Panel (10:00-11:00am) Bonnie Vagasky Paul Peterson Kelly Smith - IN Tim Lies Matt Bigaouette Maria Baxter-Nuamah Discussion: Which panelist seemed to have a leadership style most like your own? Why? Final leadership profile paper. The final paper for the class is to aggregate and synthesize the material and information uncovered in the class to create a personal profile of leadership. Consider your leadership profile, your famous leader, the person you interviewed, the learning gained from the readings, the discussions in class and online, the leadership panel, and any other thinking you have done on the subject to craft a clear profile of who you are and who you hope to be as a leader. A rough outline might look like the following, but you may approach this in any way that helps you build a profile that is meaningful to you. I encourage you to vary from this as you determine better ways to show your growth in understanding. Where you were as a leader before the class? Key leadership themes that connected with you, and why. Your strength areas to leverage in leadership opportunities. Your challenge areas and how you can apply new understandings from class to them. Realistic leadership goals or inspirations. The action plan. How can you put these concepts into action?
