The Epiphany of the Lord

Meditating on the Word

Few of us realize the Feast of the Epiphany is much older than the Feast of Christmas! We do know the word epiphany means manifestation or revelation. This feast was first celebrated by the Eastern Church in commemoration of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. On that occasion a voice from heaven proclaimed, you are my beloved Son (Mark 1:11). This is how the Father announced for the first time that Jesus really is the Son of God. The Western Church adopted the celebration of Epiphany some hundred years later, and its focus was on the visit of the Magi. This is understandable because the Magi represent non-Jewish people and herald the acceptance of Jesus by all the people of the world. At the scene of the Magi there are also clear elements of a divine manifestation or an epiphany, as the star guides them along the road toward Bethlehem. The Magi (who represent all of us) could not have found the infant Savior if God had not revealed it to them. In our daily conversations we often wish for or make requests that require a miracle or magic. We say we arent miracle workers or magicians, but we are, not in the sense of making magic but in the evangelical sense. God continues to call us and all humans to be like the Magi in todays gospel and to search and find Him in His Son. The only difference between us and those Magi is, they heard Gods call and had the courage to leave their land and search for Him. We, on the other hand, dont want to disturb our comforts or routines, but until we do we cannot truly find God. Today we should encourage ourselves to be more like the Magi in their search for God. We should become aware of the needs of others and in doing so we will find God and become a source of bringing Him to the lonely, the poor and the sick. Do not forget the Magi found the Christ Child lying in a lowly manger with His family dwelling in a cave.
