SUMMARY: David Copperfield was born on a Friday at 12 midnight. Davids father died six months before he was born. He grew up with his Mother Clara and Peggotty, his nanny. When he was around five to seven years old he was invited by Pegotty to join her in her short vacation to Yarmouth. He enjoyed his visit and met his new friends, Ham, Emily and Mr. Peggotty. David was surprised to learn that his mother was married during the time that he was at Yarmouth. Davids life began to change after his mother married Mr. Murdstone.

Mr. Murdstone ordered Clara, the mother of David to tyeach the young boy under his close supervision. Mr. Murdstone together with his sister Miss Murdstone were very strict to Clara and David that it was hard for the young boy to memorize his lessons due to nervousness whenever he will sit with his mother at the salon for his lessons.

Mr. Murdstone got angry and almost beat David to death. Clara and Peggotty was not able to do anything to help David. The young boy was locked in his room and was soon sent to Salem School to study. He was criticized by the school administrator and was even punished during the first days of school by having him carry a sign that he is a dog, because he bit Mr. Murdstone.

At Salem House, he met a new friend named J. Steerforth, another student, but much older than David who protected him as a real friend. David will only go home to his mother during holidays. His vacations in their house were never again as happy as before, because of the presence of the Murdstone siblings. Clara and David were never allowed to have happy times together. In one of Davids

visit to their house in Blunderstone, he learned that his mother gave birth to a baby boy. Shortly after his return to Salem School, he was summoned to go to Mrs. Creakle. He was told that his mother and brother died.

Mr. Murdstone decided that it would be too expensive for David to continue to go to school. Instead, he arranged for David to work in a wine warehouse. The work was very hard for David as a young boy, but what worried him most was the misery and the shame and the feeling of hopelessness. One afternoon he was asked to go and leave with the family of Mr. Micawber as instructed by Mr. Murdstone. He found a short new life with the household of the Micawbers. Mr. Micawber was sent to prisson due to debts and his family went too to live with him.

David decided to look for his last hope and that was to find his only Aunt, Miss Betsy Trotwood. He was robbed of his belongings and money on his way to Dover. It took him six days walking to reach the house of his Aunt. Two days after his arrival Mr. Murdstone and his sister arrived. David requested his Aunt not to give him back to the Murdstones.

David was given a new life by his Aunt Betsy Trotwood. He was sent to school in Canterbury where he met new friends. David went to live in the house of Mr. Wickfield and Agnes during his study in Canterbury. When he turned 17, he went to London to continue his study and work at the same time. He met Dora, daughter of the owner of Spenlow and Jorkins, a law office where David works. They liked each other and David married Dora. Unfortunately, they only lived together for one year, because Dora became ill and died.

Ms. Betsy Trotwood and Mr. Wickfield were robbed off their money and properties by a man named Uriah Heep. It was Mr. Micawber and another friend of David who helped them proved the wrong

doings of Uriah to help Ms. Betsy Trotwood and Mr. Wickfield get their possessions back. Mr. Wickfields outlook in life changed and realized that it was wrong for him to be under the influence of Uriah and even allowing his daughter to be engaged with Uriah.

When the problem was resolved, David decided to go to Switzerland and pursue his writing. He began earning money through his books. He went back to visit his Aunt in Canterbury and found out that Agnes is still single. David went to visit Agnes and proposed his love to her.
