PICTURES BY ACCIDENT
A HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHIC APPEARANCE
Often the history of photography is told as a success story of technical innovations. But this anecdote about the steady progress crosses another story about accidents: technology failed, photos melted, became discolored or disappeared behind unexplainable clouds and fog. Things that were supposed to stay invisible the medium of transmission itself appeared highly visible. Around 1900 people began to photograph the unseen radiation, phantoms, thoughts and suddenly nobody could say wether the pictures showed natural phenomena or effects of the photographic shot. Distant galaxies or dust on the lens? The image of Jesus or a coincidental phenomenon during production? The disturbance is the point, which initiates questions about the truth of photography.

THE EULENBURG SCANDAL

A CULTURAL HISTORY OF POLITICS IN IMPERIAL GERMANY
The scandal surrounding Prince Eulenburg, the best friend and for a short time the counselor of Emperor Wilhem II, shook up the monarchy until 1906. Basing his research on numerous sources including over 5,000 press articles, author Norman Domeier delves into this scandal and provised a cultural history of politics in imperial Germany. Domeier shows that the scandal did not solely focus on the homosexuality of the prince, but it was the priming for contemporary, critical publicity in Germany. Additionally it became an opportunity to justify the pending World War not just politically, militarily and economically, but morally.

MYTHICAL MODERNITY
AVIATION, FASCISM AND THE CRAVING FOR ORDER IN GERMANY AND ITALY
The incarnations of fascism in Italy and Germany were both a modern and an anti-modernist phenomenon. It marked the beginning of a new era, however, it was set determinedly against the modern liberal society. In both countries, aviation became a symbol for the departure and ascent into the new age. The aviator became a symbol of the New Man. In his book Fernando Esposito sees aviation as a metaphor for Fascism itself and shows its blueprint for a mythical, yet genuinely modern modernity.

HISTORY

THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN LAW IN 19TH CENTURY GERMANY

The institution of public trials and modern criminal codes were established in Germany in the 19th century. Both were intented to care for equality within law. What was the reason behind this large scale change? Rebekka Habermas investigates these questions through the lense of thievery, which proved to keep the courts the busiest out of any other crime. Habermas not only reconstructs the logic of the reformers, but also the motives of thieves, the work of the police, and the search for evidence by attorneys as well as the contribution by criminologists and journalists to these cases. Through her resarch, Habermas shows how modern law was created from a diverse cast of protagonists and the equally important public, which felt entitled in judging the courts events according to their own criteria.

HISTORY

THE PRIVATE TUTOR

SEXUALITY, CRIMINALITY, AND THE MEDIA AROUND 1900
October 1903. Bayreuth is the scene of a sensational trial. Andreas Dippold, a 23-year-old law student and private tutor to two brothers, is accused of beating his students so violently that one of them died of his injuries. Dippold insists that he was right to discipline his charges, to correct their wicked habit of masturbation. The boys well-to-do parents (the father is director of the Deutsche Bank) use all their influence to portray the accused as a sexually depraved criminal, a danger to society. The court has its own views and sentences Dippold to eight years imprisonment. Court observers and the general public are outraged by the apparently lenient sentence. The trial and its outcome spark a lively debate in the German press, with well-known writers and journalists joining the fray. Michael Hagner tells the story of the tutor, the boys and their parents leading up to the trial, drawing on contemporary sources and the court proceedings. He then analyzes the legal, medical and media practices of the time, which construed the complex events as a case model only partly based on the facts. The scandal was hotly debated in pedagogy, criminology, psychiatry and the sexual sciences, and eventually the term dippoldism entered the textbooks as a classic example of educatory sadism. In a style that confidently bridges the gap between storytelling and academic writing, Hagner paints a disturbing picture of the rigidity of child-rearing at the time. A shocking and uncomfortable story. A history lesson that still resonates today.

TUNGUSKA OR THE DEATH OF NATURE

Climate change, environmental destruction, nutrition: all of todays burning issues center around nature. Nature has also been a central philosophical issue for 2000 years. The ideas and arguments from the past are an invaluable contribution to the current debate. But what in fact do we mean when we talk about nature? What is it that we intend on protecting? Philosopher Michael Hampe presents some controversial answers. Four men a physicist, a philosopher, a biologist and a mathematician are adrift on a ship on the sea. In dense fog, they begin a discussion about the Tunguska event, which devastated a vast woodland area in Siberia through explosions and lightning in 1908. To this day, no one knows exactly what happened and the four scholars seem unable to agree on one explanation. Instead, the question of how the Tunguska mystery might be resolved by applying established natural laws results in a debate on the definition of nature itself. Perhaps it is the world as it was before the intervention of homo sapiens? Or merely a game of chance? Is it intrinsically good or evil? Are humans part of it or not? Or is it ultimately nothing but a brainchild spawned by mans imagination? Michael Hampe stages a fictional debate on a cohesive concept of nature, the meaning of which we are all convinced we know. Following his meditations on a perfect life, Hampe has further honed his art of philosophical dialogue: this book is guaranteed to give you plenty of food for thought as well as keeping you entertained.

ESCALATION OF VIOLENCE IN THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY
A basic international principle applied to colonial warfare: every form of violence, even against women and children, is acceptable as long as it serves a countrys war aims. Perhaps more important than judging military acts from a moral point of view, is attempting to understand how such acts of extreme violence could occur in the first place. conflicts the Boxer War in China, the Herero and Nama wars in German Southwest Africa, and the Majimaji War in German East Africa that the type and extent of violence was determined by the interplay of various local factors specific to each situation. THE ENEMY IS TO THE EAST

HITLERS SECRET PLANS FOR A WAR AGAINST THE SOVIET UNION IN 1939
Rolf-Dieter Mllers book offers a new perspective on the prehistory of Hitlers campaign in Russia. The invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22nd, 1941 is considered by historians as the last phase of Hitlers step-by-step plan to conquer Germanys Lebensraum in the East. In his latest book, renowned military historian Mller challenges this view. Using previously overlooked sources, he shows that Hitler was contemplating the possibility of an imminent war of intervention against the U.S.S.R. since taking power in 1933. Hitler and the Wehrmacht began negotiations with Poland and even went as far as considering an alliance with Japan. With the war underway in September 1939, an immediate military engagement with the Red Army was still on the table. A look at events leading up to the campaign shows that there was neither a step-by-step plan for eastward expansion nor was Operation Barbarossa a pre-emptive war, as some scholars and journalists would have come to believe.

ANTI-JEWISH RESEARCH IN THE THIRD REICH

SCHOLARSHIP BETWEEN POLITICS, PROPOGANDA AND IDEOLOGY
Rupnows text, situated at the intersection of Holocaust and Jewish Studies, contemporary and intellectual history, is the first comprehensive German-language monograph that focuses on anti-Jewish scholarship in the Third Reich; its aims, topics, and methods; its institutions and actors; its functions and practices within the coordinates of scholarship, propaganda, ideology, and politics; and its location within the broader frame of intellectual history and the development of antisemitism. It considers both, the beginning of anti-Jewish research as well as its repercussions and reception after 1945 (including the beginnings of Judaic and Jewish Studies in postwar Germany and Austria). The author devotes specific attention to the interaction between anti-Jewish scholarship on the one hand and anti-Jewish policies of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust on the other, as raising questions on the scholarly status of anti-Jewish research in the Third Reich. Rupnows analysis is based on original and comprehensive research in more than 40 archives in Germany, Austria, Poland, France, the USA, and Switzerland.

HISTORY

DEATH FROM THE SKY

Aerial warfare and the struggle for remembrance a new view of the history of violence of the 20th century During the Second World War, aerial warfare evolved into a means of imparting massive destruction upon cities and military sites. A combination of technical modernity and federal discipline, such warfare was the culmination of industrial war-making in the Age of Extremes. Popular morale during wartime was to become for both nations the adhesive of society. Yet what was actually meant by good or bad wartime morale, or by solidarity and perseverance?

WAR SOCIETIES AND THE BOMBING CAMPAIGN IN GERMANY AND ENGLAND

By researching the phenomenon of death from the sky, Dietmar Sss has attempted to answer the question of how Germany and England ethically, religiously, and politically legitimized the employment of weapons of mass destruction. What role did Christian churches play? How did concepts of the desire for revenge and a righteous or legitimate war form? In Death from the Sky, Sss shows how well after 1945 such questions remain unanswered and how the memories of death from the sky have remained fresh to present day. The author presents what war as a condition of society means and in what ways dictatorships and democracies control the militarization of the populace.

KARL JGER
MURDERER OF THE LITHUANIAN JEWS
As an SS-Standartenfhrer, Karl Jger led the murder of Lithuanian Jews, initially in the function of chief of Einsatzkommando 3 (EK 3) and later as commander of the Security Police and the Security Service (KdS) in Kaunas/Lithuania. In his activity report dated December 1st, 1941, Jger reported that his superiors ordered the execution of 137,346 Jews and later boasted that Lithuania was now free from Jews. This detailed report is a key document within the history of the holocaust. Who was this police officer from the second level of the SS hierarchy, who saw himself as a soldier? How could a sensitive musician and orchestrionmaker become one of the most efficient mass murderers of the Nazi era? Wette not only describes the German and Lithuanian war criminals, but also gives their victims a face. After the war, Jger initially lived undisturbed until he was arrested in 1959 and committed suicide in Hohenasperg penitentiary near Ludwigsburg. In his home town in south Baden where the author lives the revelation of Jgers crimes prompted horror, fear and defensive reactions.

DIETRICH & RIEFENSTAHL

THE INVENTION OF THE MODERN WOMAN
They were beautiful, famous and successful - and they projected a radical new image of womanhood. Ineffably feminine, fiercely independent, stunningly beautiful and in love with success: the archetype young women aspire to today was invented by two Berlin movie stars between the world wars. Berlin 1918: Germanys imperial period is in decline, the country is shattered by defeat. In this unlikely setting, two women who will only ever meet in passing share the same dream of success. Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl sense that their moment has come with the dawning of a new age. They want to go on stage and into the movies and because they are good looking, smart, clever tacticians and good dancers, success is not far off. Without role models or fixed ideas, they nonetheless have an unerring instinct for presenting themselves as modern women and the rapid expansion of the film industry and mass media provides the perfect breeding ground for their talents to prosper. With the ascent of the Third Reich, Hitler is only too well aware that the public craves idols, and Leni Riefenstahl gives him exactly what he needs. Meanwhile, Marlene Dietrich escapes to Hollywood where she rises to international stardom. Karin Wieland presents a surprising new perspective on 20th century culture and society. Not only does she make it clear why Dietrich and Riefenstahl have not lost their attractiveness today, but also how young women leading independent and successful lives owe far more than they realize to these two interwar lifestyle icons.

THE WAY TO THE WALL

PHASES OF THE HISTORY OF DIVISION
In reconstructing the international pre-history of the building of the Berlin Wall and the exact ballot between Chruschtschow and the leader of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, author Manfred Wilke was able to use for the first time transcripts of the conversations between Chruschtschow and Ulbricht transcripts which have not been accessible to researchers until now. The long jouney towards the building of the Berlin Wall started in 1945. Stalin commissioned the German Communist Party (KPD) in the Soviet occupation zone to take power. The three western powers safeguarded their sphere of influence at the same time. In 1949 two German states were born, though Berlin was still divided into four sectors. The city had become an eratic block and a window of the west, while existing in the middle of the GDR. After the Soviets had failed to drive out the Allies of West-Berlin by blockading the city in 1948/1949, the second crisis of Berlin followed from 1958 to 1960, when Moscow gave an ultimatum to the western powers to clear out Berlin and turn it into a free city. The decision to construct the border was made by Nikita Chruschtschow and was based on the increasing number of refugees from the GDR.

A ERA OF THE WORLD WARS 1914THE WEST, VOL.2 HISTORY OF - 1945 THE
Wars, crises, catastrophes: The years from 1914 to 1945 strike many observers as a repetition of the Thirty Years War. They constitute the German chapter in the history of the West and one of the most terrible chapters in human history. Heinrich August Winkler offers a masterly account of these dramatic decades, from the outbreak of World War I to the German capitulation in May 1945 and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki three months later. No other country broke so radically with the Western model of government and its norms as Germany did in the year 1933. After Hitler came to power the country became the greatest destabilizing factor in world affairs. In the end, the forces of democracy survived the war that the Third Reich had unleashed only with the help of the United States and Great Britain together with its dominions. But how had Western democracies come to be on the defensive in the 1920s and 30s? Why were most countries in Europe dominated by radical nationalist politics? Winkler investigates these and many other questions in this work, using a new approach that looks at the era through a transatlantic lense.

THEHISTORY OF THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS DREAM OF REASON A SHORT

There is a phantom within the field of science - the phantom of thought experiments. Thought Experiments promise a gain in insight without the aid of empirical work - which before the selfconcept of modern natural science was impossible. Yet from the beginning the search for Thought Experiments has been a central theme in the long tradition of empirical science for scientists of the past (Stevi, Galileo, and Newton) and today. Ulrich Khne narrates the history of this ancient dream of mankind, by making natural laws accessible through rational arguments. Khne begins the book by engaging the optimism of natural philosophers Kant and rsted to combatting the Common Sense Theorists with their representations of abstract natural theories concerning relativity and quanta. The book focuses on one question: Wether in the rich history of concepts and methods, Thought Experiments will not only transcend illusory hopes, but also find a meaningful definition within natural sciences.

A SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY OF LAW

A sociological theory of the law that is commited to Niklas Luhmanns Systems Theory must work around a definition of itself that is drawn from outside of the legal system (including legal practice, legal dogmatics, juristic methodology, legal philosophy and legal theory). From this background the book examines both concept and function, legal worth and efficiency, the difference between justice and injustice, as well as the relationship of law and fairness. The differentiation that exists within the legal system leads to question concerning its evolution, hierarchy and rationality. Furthermore the book analyzes the structural interconnections between the legal system and both politics and economics.

PHILOSOPHY

THE CONCEPT OF ARGUMENT

The book develops a thoroughly revised and renewed concept of argument. Starting with a survey over the past and present approaches, the book engages in dealing with our present needs in the understanding of argument, i.e. the subjective perspectives and the dynamics of theory and knowledge. The renewal of the concept is based on the philosophy of pragmatism, modified with Hegelian Dialectics and the Dialogue Logic of Paul Lorenzen. There are several new basic distinctions developed: the pragmatic concept of theory, the orientation system, the frame structures

ON THE RELATIONS BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE, RESEARCH, BELIEF, SUBJECTIVITY AND REASON

in argument, the argumentative validity of a thesis and finally the principle of transsubjectivity. The relevant ideas are all explained and illustrated extensively with examples of daily life but also of scientific and cultural revolutions (Phlogiston Theory, Columbus voyage to India, The French Revolution). The connections between knowledge, research, belief and action are made transparent, and a concept of the growth of knowledge is developed which is not relativistic and socio-constructive but epistemic and philosophically supported.

MAKING SEX REVISITED

Judith Butler once critiqued binary approaches to biological sex on the level of the interpretation of signs, thus avoiding a discussion of actually existing organic structures and their possible binarity. By contrast, the following contribution is concerned with historical and contemporary biological theories about such structures. Tracing theories of preformation and epigenetics, Making Sex Revisited demonstrates that a focus on processes of evolution and differentiation leads to pluri-sexual approaches to biological sex. Organic structures develop individually and vary when

various individuals are compared. The predominance of binary interpretations results from the distinction between two sexes and their unequal treatment, still prevalent in society.
