MaIn eVenT Atlanta Celebrates Photography

Snap Attack!
A splendor of visual overstimulation now in its 12th year, atlanta celebrates photography remains one of Atlantas signature annual art events. During the month of October (acp.org), executive director amy Miller and her able cohort Michael david Murphy bring an eclectic blend of lms, portfolio reviews, visual art exhibitions and lectures (including a talk by the Metropolitan Museum of Arts photo curator Jeff rosenheim, oct. 22) to town.

Show World
Part of ACPs charm is how it blankets the city with a plethora of photo-based work at venues from funky coee houses to traditional galleries. Some of the gallery shows worth checking out this year include the humorously titled Doctors of Photography exhibition at Jennifer Schwartz Gallery through Oct. 9 (jenniferschwartzgallery.com) featuring three medical doctors who dabble in the form. Buzz-worthy international work is also on the menu with a solo show of creepyprovocative South African artist Roger Ballens black and white work at Jackson Fine Art (jacksonneart.com), Oct. 29-Dec. 23. 2e ACA Gallery of SCAD (scad.edu/exhibitions) is hosting German conceptual photographer Candida Hfer from Sept. 10-Oct. 29 whose work captures the depopulated interiors of libraries, museums and theaters. Also worth a look, SCAD photography professor Steve Aishmans show at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (thecontemporary.org) Oct. 9 -Dec. 12 that will delve into four bodies of the inventive photographers work including a series on dudes he deems OK to handle his son, the supremely sweet and tender Pictures of Guys I Like Holding Bill and a deliciously tactile, occasionally lurid series celebrating the iconic Fifties toy, Silly Putty Rorschach.

Celluloid Couple
Husband-and-wife creatives Whitney and Micah Stansell have already made a mark in the city with memorable installations at last years one-nightonly art happening Le Flash, and exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and Whitespace Gallery. For one night only on Oct. 1, 8pm-2am, the Stansells will screen their 15 minute

video and sound installation Between You and Me, projected onto the Norfolk Southern Building. 2e lm is about alienation in our modern, online world. With a cast of comely local actors, the artists explore roleslibrarian, postal worker, loverendangered by our newly beloved virtual reality. 2e lmic happening is sponsored by Flux (uxprojects.org), a one-night only public art event that brings performance, lm, dance and sculpture to the Castleberry Hill neighborhood.

Family Secrets
2ough he moved to New York almost a decade ago, former Atlantan Chris Verenes photography continues to exert a powerful sway in the city and has been one of Atlantas enduring success stories of a local boy made good. From Oct. 9-Nov. 4 hell return to Marcia Wood Gallery in Castleberry Hill to exhibit his work and sign copies, on Oct. 9, 6pm of his latest monograph from Twin Palms Publications, Family, which continues the artists twenty ve-year long mission to document his extended family living in the economically-depressed hamlet of Galesburg, Ohio. 2e pictures run the gamut from hopeful to dire, but have an empathy and heart that makes them stick in the brain.
