annual report 2010/2011

Hunger is not about food, its about poverty.

letter From tHe cHair oF tHe boarD anD executive Director
Our staff and board continue to dedicate themselves both personally and professionally to the fight against hunger. In addition to raising and distributing enough food to provide for 794,000 client visits and over 150,000 nutritious meals, weve accomplished a lot in the fight against hunger this past year. Below are just some of the highlights: Committed to supporting our member agencies, Daily Bread held a conference called Fighting Hunger: Inviting Change that explored how to create safe, respectful and welcoming food programs for all clients. With a generous donation from Tim Hortons we secured a new hybrid truck; helping to continue our environmental sustainability efforts and allowing us to distribute and pick up more food. With gas costs continually rising, we also implemented new planning software in our transportation department that has allowed us to decrease the cost of distributing food by maximizing our time on the road. The Peoples Blueprint Review Conference in April mixed influential policy makers, poverty advocates and the chairs of the current Commission for the Review of Ontario Social Assistance with people with lived experience of poverty who discussed their research findings on how poverty and the current social assistance system is affecting low income Ontarians. Find out more about this project, done in partnership with Voices from the Street, at www.peoplesblueprint.com. In our production hall we have expanded our working area and created two new sorting areas for fresh vegetables and other perishable products. We have also better designed our warehouse to maximize the amount of space available. Our storage space, and our capacity to store food, has now increased substantially. The number of corporate groups to volunteer over the past year increased by 58 per cent as we expanded not only the types of volunteer opportunities we have available, but also revamped the program to ensure we were creating a great experience for volunteers that would last far beyond one afternoon at Daily Bread. We are continuing to advocate for all three major Ontario political parties to support the adoption and implementation of an Ontario Housing Benefit, which would go a long way to supporting people on low incomes. Please take a look at www.dailybread.ca to find out more about this initiative and how it will help the fight against hunger. Hunger is not about food, its about poverty. Hunger is about not having enough money at the end of the day to buy nutritious food for you and your family. Poverty is vicious, cyclical and devastating to the physical and mental well-being of so many in the community. Many of the people who come to food banks and meal programs for help need more than just food they need affordable housing and good job opportunities, retraining or educational opportunities, affordable child care, mental health and medical care. For many of us, being able to afford food is a privilege. It should be a right. Thank you for continuing to support Daily Bread Food Bank, and the fight against hunger in our communities. Sincerely,
Eric Meerkamper Chair of the Board Gail Nyberg Executive Director

WHo We are
Whether its driving the trucks, supporting our member agencies, running the onsite food bank, coordinating volunteers, conducting research, educating youth, fundraising for money or food, crunching the numbers, making meals for the homeless or sending the orders out in the warehouse, Daily Breads staff is dedicated to fighting hunger. With eight trucks and over 50 full-time staff, we work hard every day to provide food and resources to a network of approximately 170 food banks and community agencies that distribute food through over 200 programs. With the invaluable assistance of volunteers, we sort, pack and distribute up to a million pounds of food a month. Were more than just a food bank. Were working hard to make an impact in the community by not only providing food and resources to the people who need it most but also by looking at ways to solve the issues that lead to hunger in the first place. We bring individuals, companies, schools and community groups together to learn about hunger and how they can help. We provide information and resources to clients who are here because theyre hungry, but are hungry as a direct result of poverty. Daily Bread Food Bank runs a number of programs designed to empower individuals on low incomes and build community engagement and interest in issues of poverty and hunger.

Community Development and Engagement Our Advocacy Program trains volunteers and provides support to our clients who require information or need help in such areas as housing, education, employment or social assistance. This includes provision of Income Tax Clinics in partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and budget planning sessions. The Growing For Change Community Garden provides people on social assistance with valuable life skills. Creating Better Neighbourhoods Provides information and assistance on how to develop food banks, meal programs using a community development model. Daily Bread ran 9 Non-Violent Crisis Intervention workshops providing people with the skills and strategies to be able to respond calmly and effectively in conflict situations. We also ran 18 Food Safety Training courses for staff and volunteers across the city. The Community Action Fund is an emergency grant program that provides funds for food programs to develop and expand their infrastructure. Last year 28 agencies benefited from this fund with over $150,000 distributed. Food Bank and Distribution In addition to collecting and distributing food to our network of 170 member agencies, we are also a distribution hub for the GTA and a provincial distribution centre assisting Ontario Association of Food Banks in equitably sharing food resources throughout Ontario. Healthy Meal Program and Nutritious Meals Prepared onsite in our training kitchen, we deliver over 150,000 hot meals a year to hostels, shelters and community centres. These programs provide a safe place for marginalized and vulnerable people in Toronto. Clients can enjoy a complete healthy meal based on the Canadian Food Guide Standard. Hungry City Educating youth about who is hungry in our communities and why is the first step in the fight to end hunger. Daily Breads educational program, Hungry City, educates, engages and empowers students to learn more about the root causes of poverty and hunger through our educational website www.hungrycity.ca and provides a way for students to get involved by volunteering. Food Services Training Program By addressing the root causes of poverty, this program is aimed at empowering individuals who face barriers to employment by providing training opportunities to learn job and life skills in our 4,500 sq ft kitchen. This program benefits approximately 30 people each year in an intensive, 16-week training period. Research Why are people going hungry and what can we do to find long-term solutions? We know providing food to people struggling with hunger is only a temporary solution. Our research program focuses on finding innovative solutions by building our knowledge base through our annual Whos Hungry survey as well as giving a voice to people with lived experience of poverty through community based research projects such as the Peoples Blueprint.

treaSurerS report
I am happy to report that Daily Bread has had another successful financial year despite ongoing challenges. A $408,000 operating fund surplus allowed us to transfer $243,000 to the Food Fund to meet the continuing high food needs of our clients, as they gradually recover from the recent economic downturn. We also increased support to our member agencies by $39,000, up 17% over 2010 and 25% over the average of the last three years. Overall we finished the fiscal year with a surplus of $20,000. To improve communications and transparency with our stakeholders, this year we have adopted the functional basis of financial reporting that is available to charities under Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. This shows that approximately 30% of our program expenditures went to services other than food distribution supporting Toronto food banks, our Food Services Training Program, and public education and policy up from 27% last year. Food purchases came in at approximately 23% (2010 24%) despite a 9% reduction in the number of food bank client visits compared to 2010s all time high note, however, that 2011 visits were still 6% over 2009 and 16% over 2008. Daily Bread continues to be in good financial health. Unrestricted cash reserves stand at the $2 million mark, representing somewhat less than four months operating costs, allowing us to weather the summer months and handle any other contingencies that might occur. Going forward, a key challenge continues to be maintaining our supply of donated and purchased food. We deeply appreciate the financial and food support our funders generously provide. This ongoing support continues to be critical in serving our communities, as we continue our mission of meeting our clients short-term needs while attacking the underlying causes of hunger. Sincerely,
Alex Sandahl

Volunteers are the foundation of Daily Bread Food Bank. We simply could not do what we do without their dedication and commitment. They dont just sort food they answer our phones, direct people to local food banks, assist clients in our New Toronto Street and Allan Gardens Food Bank, interview food bank clients during our annual survey and help prepare food in the kitchen. Last year, Daily Bread increased the number of unique individual volunteers as well as the number of groups coming in. Volunteers worked 26,200 shifts for a total of 93,855 hours worked. The total volunteer hours equals about 53 full-time employees working 35 hours per week for 52 weeks. Group volunteers helped to sort and pack over 2 million pounds of food last year. Every single department at Daily Bread, from Finance to Advocacy to Operations, relies on the generosity of spirit and the valuable gift of time that our volunteers give to us every day.

I love learning new things. Im happy to be given new challenges so I can develop new skills.
~ Frances, Daily bread Food bank volunteer
