SSC - In the Examination Hall

By Madhav Jha in A gROuP FoR aLL Kind Of cOmPetiTiVe ExAMs Edit Doc No matter how much we study for the subjects, everything is decided by what we end up doing in those 2 hours which count the most on the Examination day. Most of the students perform lesser than their potentials because they don't plan for the exam day. That is because we forget all the important factors which affect our ranking and marks.

There are 4 important functions which govern your performance. a. Difficulty level of questions. External constant influences "Marks". b. Attempts made by other candidates. External constant influences "Rank". c. Your preparation. A variable depending on time devoted and interest, etc. d. Your attempt in the Exam hall. A variable of mental state and planning.

It can bee seen that first 2 factors are not in the control of any individual and can be better left alone. It is very important that we keep control of everything which can take ourselves to a higher level, i.e. our competition is with ourself. If we are able to compete and improve over self we will get an edge over our competitors naturally. I have come up with some of these points.

1. End Your Preparation 1-2 days before Exam Day - This can only happen if you PLAN your preparation in terms of the number of days available. I know it is very difficult to feel that the preparation is done, however, we need to be satisfied with whatever we are able to do just two days before. Consider that your exam is scheduled 2 days before than actual. Only thing that you should be doing in these couple of days is remembering the Formulae, revising the important points and , of course, relaxing. Please don't start any new topics on these days. Another important point is that don't practice mock tests on the day before the exam, this can make you restless about your weaknesses and do nothing other than to shatter your confidence levels. Ideal time to take mock test is a month to 2 weeks before the exam. You can continue your time tests till one week of the exam.

2. Set your Appetite levels - You should be clear about the number of marks for which you are fighting for, at a given difficulty level. This can be determined if you are aware of your abilities and the past trends in the difficulty levels. For instance, suppose that you require 120 marks in

Tier-1 to be in a good position for getting your desired post, you have to prepare as much that you get above 120 marks in the previous years' papers of SSC. if you do that then it doesn't matter if this year's paper is difficult or not because cut-offs will vary accordingly. In the examination hall, if you are able to solve at least 90% of your target attempts in one subject you should move onto the next subject so that you don't miss out on the easier questions in other sections. Last few minutes should be devoted to go back and select the preferred questions. you should be able to read all of he questions in the given time.

3. Keep an eye on Time-to-Mark Ratio - You should be aware of the time-to-marks ratio of all the questions. You have -120 minutes, -200 questions to read -130-160 answers to mark on the Answer Sheet -2-5 minutes for breaks, attendances and other distractions.

In this situation the time available per mark is around 30-40 secs. If you are taking more than 1 min for a question it is a risk. You should be able to assess the difficulty level of the questions not just on the availability of a solution but also on the time taken to arrive at the solution. For example, some of you may find para-jumble questions easy but if the lines in the jumbled paras are huge you may be missing marks on other smaller questions by attempting these longer questions.

Balance of "Appetite" and "time-to-marks Ratio" You can see that it is possible to attempt for 145 marks in 1:45 Hrs using the above strategy. You can be able to get 120-130 marks if you have good (around 85-90%) accuracy.

4. Alertness of mind, use stimulants - It is very important for your mind at its best while you attempt the exam. These are the most important 2 hours to prove your level. Some like to drink tea others coffee. They are equally good. your brain at 100% potential can do wonders that you yourself can't foresee. Have a fair enough sleep the previous night.

In the end I would say, Excelling in a competitive exam is more about planning and strategy than about intelligence. Like Follow Post Report July 12 at 2:36pm

Negative marks - Tips to minimise

By Madhav Jha in A gROuP FoR aLL Kind Of cOmPetiTiVe ExAMs Edit Doc Every candidate taking up bank or ssc exams for the first time are more concerned about Negative marks.Negative marks in bank exams are awarded to each and every wrong answer ,which ranges from 0.25 - 0.50 marks. If you still have no clue on how to steer clear without negative marks, proceed reading to know about the do`s & don'ts.

What you must do to minimize negative marks ?

# Analyze the Question paper in advance by referring previous question papers. This helps to get a clear picture of the type of questions in each section. For this, previous question papers or question paper blueprints would help in knowing the pattern

# Practice is the only key.Since most bank exams expect you to complete 120-150 questions in 3 hours, its necessary for the candidates to figure out short-cut methods, easy problem solving skills so that precious time could be saved.

# Try attending mock tests using sample bank exam question papers, which will help to decide on the amount of time needed to answer each question.Time Management is the most needed skill to answer all the questions in time.

# Prepare short notes of your preparations, formulas, important theorems etc.,so you can refer to it during the last minute preparation rather than reading the books.

# Be cool & calm while writing the exam.Getting tensed on an unknown question or hurrying to complete the exam soon, contribute to negative marks largely.

# Answer the questions that you are confident of being correct ,rather than getting stuck with a question & wasting time trying to answer it.

# Do not guess until you are very sure of the answer.Guessing can drastically reduce the marks without your knowing.

# Do not erase or overwrite frequently.Since the OMR sheets are read by computers, any improper erasing marks will be calculated as wrong answers, leading to negative marks. In an attempt to avoid negative marks, don't skip all the unknown questions.Take calculated risks & think of the nearest answer, since there is no success without risks Like Follow Post Report July 11 at 2:10pm

Preparation Strategy for SSC CGLE

By Madhav Jha in A gROuP FoR aLL Kind Of cOmPetiTiVe ExAMs Edit Doc All the SSC CGLE aspirants, We need to have some strategy to prepare for the exam in an efficient way. I would like to present a strategy which can help you clear it with normal efforts withot spending more time on unuseful topics.

The amount of time spent on preparation varies from individual to individual. But because the distribution of marks is so much skewed towards Maths & English, it becomes obvious to strategize the time in favour of these 2 subjects.

General awareness has weightage only in Tier-1 and since nothing big can be done to improve this part in a small time we should limit our time spent on this. Also, for reasoning we should only spend limited effort because it will matter only in Tier-1. During Tier-1 it can be given 2530 % share of time and G.Awareness less than 15 %. In overall preparation these 2 subjects should not take more than 10% (each) of your time.

GK- total marks=50 No. of question 50.- Every individual is able to score 15 marks in this section without any extra effort. In other words, almost 15questions asked in this section are very

easy and belong to day to day life e.g. 1. What are the functions of WTO. 2. Who won the ICC cricketer of the Year in 2010 etc. Your target in this paper should be 25-30 marks. For achieving target of 25-30 or more than 30 read as much objective question with answers available in current magazines and practice book, as u can. Books Recommended: Lucent GK, Manorama/Scholastic Yearbook, CSR etc.

Reasoning- total marks=50 No. of question 50.- This is the scoring section of CGL, in this section one can easilyscore 45- 50 marks with hundred percent accuracy. The mool mantra for scoring 45-50 marks is practice practice and practice from any book(s) which you like most and which consist verbal and nonverbal both. Books Recommended: Practice Book of Kiran Prakashan, R.S. Aggarwal etc.

Math total marks=250 No. of question 150(50T1 100T2) For this section your target should be between 170 to 220. It is a scoring subjects for aspirants with Mathematical background. Even if you are not good at maths you will need to score above 150 to have any chance of getting selected. You may select certain topics like geometry, probability etc,if you are short of practice. Generally these questions are lengthy and take time. Make sure you practice enough to complete the questions intime. Don't miss out on easy questions. Books Recommended: Quicker Math by M. Tyra (BSC Publication) ,Objective Math by RS Aggarwal(S Chand Publication) .

English total marks=250 No. of question 250(50T1 200T2) For this section your target should be anything between 160 to 225. You may develop the habit of reading English News paper( The Hindu), monthly magazines like Pratiyogita Darpan(hindi) and Pratiyogita Kiran(hindi). This will help u to get 15 marks from GK without any extra effort. Books recommended: Monthly/Weekly Magazines like Reader's Digest & Sunday Indian, Word Power Made easy, r.s. agarwal's objective general english (S. chand publications) .

All the best!
