Eriez Magnetics India Balluff India Bry-Air (Asia)
Metal Separator
Eriez has unveiled a new heavy duty state-of-the-art Metal Separator (Model CF), which removes metal particles from plastic regrind and virgin materials. The separators can be installed directly above the material feed throat of an extruder, injection moulding or blow moulding machine. It removes both magnetic and non-magnetic metal contaminants from a slow, downward moving column of material, reducing machine downtime, costly repairs and improving product purity. Even the smallest metal particles in molten plastic can result in a loss of production and expensive damage to extruders, injection and blow moulding machinery. The cost of repairing a screw or barrel damaged by just one larger piece of metal is enormous compared to value added for a Model CF Separator. This metal separator delivers operational reliability, even at high throughputs. The Model CF Metal Separator features automatic selfcalibration and monitoring. It is a fully automatic separation process with adjustable scanning sensitivity and rejects duration. The Model CF works so quickly that metal particles are constantly removed from free-falling granulate not only at the initial fill, but also at subsequent top-ups. The metal contamination is discharged into a reject container with a fast acting, air-powered separating slide. Model CF Metal Separators are available in four pipe sizes from approximately 2.9" to 5.9" in diameter. Features & benefits: Detects and removes even the smallest metal particles from regrind and virgin material; Reduces machine downtimes and costly repairs, providing a rapid return on investment.
Power Supply
Balluff has introduced an intelligent, energy-saving power supply especially for use in wind energy equipment. The semipotted device with an efficiency rating of 93% is designed for high shock and vibration loads. It has long service life of nearly 20 years with a MTBF of 800,000 hours. A key feature: this is the first power supply which can be connected directly to the generator voltage without the need for an intermediate transformer. Also, it has unique optical indicators which display the status and condition of the unit. Since it tracks dynamic loads, it can be operated continuously even under high load conditions. Special sensors in combination with a microcontroller continuously monitor wear factors in the power supply such as temperature, overload, faults and other conditions. Intelligent evaluation of these parameters then gives the user an overview of the status of the unit for implementing maintenance measures, thereby drastically reducing the probability of failure of the overall system. Its coloured LEDs in traffic light colours provide the user with continuous information about the current load level, the stress level as well as the life time, a forecast of remaining life expectancy. The indicators are bright enough to be seen and interpreted from several meters away. The usual 3-phase transformer used in wind power equipment can be dispensed with, thereby saving money. Thanks to its broad input range of 380 - 690 V, the switched-mode power supply can be connected directly to the generator voltage of the wind turbine.

And Other Lessons from an Accidental Manager Hank Gilman
Books support us in our solitude and keep us from being a burden to ourselves - Jeremy Collier
Plenty of managers never asked, expected, or trained to be put in charge of other people. But when it happens, these accidental bosses often find that learning to manage is like learning to swim by being dropped into the deep end of the pool. Hank Gilman knows what that's like. As a top editor for Fortune, Newsweek, and the Boston Globe, he has helped nurture some outstanding talent. His success can be attributed largely to his management style, which allows him to treat his employees like, well, humans, while holding them accountable. But he was far from a natural when it was time to take charge. Gilman shares the lessons he's learned-through trial and error-during his two decades as a manager. Writing in a warm but no-nonsense voice, he offers straight-up advice on the ins and outs of hiring, firing, motivating, and dealing with cranky superstars. Gilman argues that your employees should always come firstand that managing down, as opposed to managing up, will ultimately lead to a successful career as a boss. About the author: Hank Gilman is the deputy managing editor of Fortune. Over his career, he has worked at The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and The Beaufort Gazette (South Carolina). He has also been a regular commentator on The Nightly Business Report on PBS.
In praise of the book: The reader should be able to pluck a few gems from the book without trying too hard. I especially enjoyed his "Director's Cut." This was the final chapter that Gilman said he could not find place anywhere else in the book. The outtakes may have been the best part. -Scott Huizenga on Amazon
I read this book in a day in a half and then gave it to someone in management at my operation. I think it should be required reading for any manager, especially those in the communications field, of which Gilman gives great examples of what to do and what not to do when managing people. -Chris S. Roush
It can help you get your new management career off on a better footing or help you clean up some problem spots in your present management gig. Or help you learn what you need to know to move from individual contributor to that management cubicle you have had your eye on. - Craig Matteson

amendments since then in keeping with the times. The World Economic Forum, in recognition of the importance of innovation in the global economic order, calculates the Global Innovation Index (GII). The GII assigns scores to 130 countries based on various innovation input and output pillars. The global leader in innovation is the USA. This does not come as a surprise as the USA has been the leading innovator and has a legacy of over 100 years in innovation. In second place is Germany. While Germany maintained its position at 2nd in the rankings in comparison with last year, Sweden has risen in the ranking from 12th in 2007 to 3rd in 2008. This is a result of increased inputs in the innovation systems in the country. The United Kingdom fellfrom 3rd to 4th slot. Also, Singapore rose from 7th in the previous years ranking to 5th in 2008. The other big gainer in the top 10 rankings is South Korea which rose from 19thto 6th. The big losers have been Japan, which fell from 4th to 9th and France which went from 5th to 19th in the rankings. researchers and the The human capacity pillar measures the availability of

support provided to them by the system in terms of training, expenditure and environment. South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan are the non-OECD countries that are leaders in this respect. The presence of Indonesia, Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka and China in the top 40 countries in terms of human capacity only corroborates the fact these emerging economies are the ones to watch out for in the future. The clear leader in terms of the human capacity to innovate, however, is the USA followed by Denmark and South Korea. One direct impact of innovation in an economy is that the awareness regarding technology and, therefore, its usage increases. This creates a market for high technology goods as well as other services to support the economic activities generated by the emergence of this new market. Thus innovation would result in the emergence of services such as insurance and financial services, research and training services, etc. The other impact of innovation would be an increase in the export of technology related goods. This output pillar measures these effects of innovation. With respect to knowledge, South East Asia does well with many countries featuring in the top 30. India, China and Indonesia feature at the 23rd, 28th and 29th places respectively in the knowledge rankings while South Korea features at the top slot. Interestingly, all the Asian countries show a significant increase in their knowledge scores over the previous year. The innovation efficiency is an attempt to understand the precise drivers of innovation in the country. The innovation efficiency is the ratio of the innovation outputs and the innovation inputs. Thus, if a country has a high innovation index but low innovation efficiency it indicates that the thrust to innovation is on the inputs side and the outputs from the innovation process do not match the inputs into the system. However, a system where the outputs are higher with fewer inputs in the innovation process would rank higher in terms of efficiency. It may be noted here that while this is not an accurate measure of the efficacy of the innovation system, it does serve as an indicator of the emerging economies in of the Nano. Indian firms have been innovating on a large scale in the interest of their own businesses. Most of these innovations have essentially been directed toward making products and services cheaper and more accessible to a greater portion of our population. Undoubtedly, any innovation which involves design of products requires large investments in terms of time and resources. Therefore, these innovations are more likely to take place in large business houses. In the case of India, innovation has grown significantly in the recent years. Patents filed in Delhi and Maharashtra together account for more than 50% of the patents filed in India. terms of innovation. It is interesting to note that Brazil, India, China and Indonesia have high innovation efficiency even though they do not rank very high in terms of the Global Innovation Index. Innovation is often based on making the user experience better or more pleasurable. These innovations may be to enhance the appeal of the product or service according to emotional, cultural or social sensibilities or convenience of use. There are many examples of innovations in India which catered to Indian market conditions and sensibilities. In the 1980s, CavinKare revolutionized the sale of shampoo by launching 8 ml sachets of shampoo. Another similar innovation is pre-paid mobile services. A very visible innovation has been in the field of retail. While the concept of discount stores has existed in various countries, in India the concept of organized retail was limited to luxury products and services with a focus on ambience. Pantaloons Retail (India) Ltd. launched the Big Bazaar stores changing this conventional view of organized retail. Possibly the most talked about innovation in recent times is the new small car by the Tatas, the Nano. Aimed attapping the middle class which currently purchases two wheelers, the Nano was designed keeping in mind Indian conditions and sensibilities along with the most important factors in this segment, the price-value proposition. The Tatas have filed for 34 patents associated with the design It is interesting to note that there appears to be no significant change in the trends in innovation across the country. The emergence of cities like Gurgaon, Bangalore and Hyderabad in the field of information technology has not led to an increase in the number of patents filed in these cities relative to other cities. One possible reason for this is that while there is research and development taking place in different parts of the country, the patent application is filed by the administration of the firm, which is invariably based in either Delhi or Mumbai. An analysis of the number of patent applications by field of applications shows that Chemicals and Drugs categories account for more than a third of the total patents filed in India since liberalization. Though there appears no clear trends in any one category, there is clearly a steep rise in the number of patent applications in the Mechanical and Chemical categories in the year 2005-06. While we cannot make any conclusions based on one data point, the sustained upward trend across categories is a positive indicator in terms of innovation in India.

Technology
On the manufacturing for example, the automotive sector has piloted use of this technology. If you need to track the history of a car as it enters for servicing, repairs etc, you can do that with the help of an RFID tag, which will be placed in the car. RFID also helps to differentiate whether the parts for the car are counterfeit or genuine. Indian automotive is seriously looking at adopting RFID for a number of, mission critical applications. Pharmaceutical industry RFID technology can also be introduced in the healthcare sector. Drug shipments will be scanned down the supply chain, from manufacturer to pharmacy. Authenticity of shipments will be verified and information made available to parties. This can prevent products from falling into the hands of counterfeiters, who could dilute or alter the drugs and then foist them on unsuspecting pharmacies and consumers. The pharmaceutical industry has found itself swallowing a bitter pill: drug counterfeiting is on the rise. "Many of these fake, diluted, and mislabeled medications pose a health threat to patients and a financial risk to manufacturers and others in the healthcare industry. Counterfeit drugs are a huge problem not only to our society but also to the pharma industry globally. The annual cost of counterfeiting to the pharmaceutical industry is around $68 billion. It ranges between 15-30 per cent of all medicines distributed and consumed worldwide. As a major exporter and manufacturer of pharma drugs and other medical products, it affects the brand equity of India in global markets. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended RFID as the best way to thwart illegal drug trafficking. About 14.3 per cent of unapproved medicines entering the US market are from India. It is in the interest of the Indian company to adopt the new technology, since it helps trace their medicine supplies, and hence check counterfeits. It is also effective in the management of goods close to the expiry date.
The USFDA may consider making this technology mandatory. Their prime concern is the safety of consumers. Indian drug companies need to act quickly, if this technology becomes mandatory in different markets, they will have no choice. This is not as easy as slap and ship. It takes some time to adopt this technology. Aviation industry With EPC RFID chips, chances of luggage being misplaced are eliminated by' Airlines. Even if it does happen, it can be tracked easily. It increases the speed of baggage transfers. And with standardised chips, the information can be made use of in multi-modal transportation. Shipping industry Thousands of containers get piled up in Inland Container Deport and at Seaports during congestion or strikes. RFID can help to locate the exact container and identify the contents inside them. RFID also facilitates security and safety of shipping containers through secure electronic seals, now required under International mandates of US Customs & Homeland Security under (CSI) Container Security Initiative etc.
Testing Centres Electronic Product Code (EPC) in global Supply Chains is today awarded to four RFID Testing Facilities in Europe, Taiwan and the United States the first EPC global Performance Test Center Accreditation Marks. India does-not have any testing facility but there is an opportunity for Indian IT companies and research institutes to offer such testing facilities in India. They will require to be accredited by EPCglobal India in line with International requirements. This will greatly help Indian Industry, particularly exporters in ensuring readability of their EPC/RFID tagged products and ready acceptance by international buyers like Wal-Mart, Metro, Tesco etc.
