Eriez Magnetics India Balluff India Bry-Air (Asia)

Metal Separator
Eriez has unveiled a new heavy duty state-of-the-art Metal Separator (Model CF), which removes metal particles from plastic regrind and virgin materials. The separators can be installed directly above the material feed throat of an extruder, injection moulding or blow moulding machine. It removes both magnetic and non-magnetic metal contaminants from a slow, downward moving column of material, reducing machine downtime, costly repairs and improving product purity. Even the smallest metal particles in molten plastic can result in a loss of production and expensive damage to extruders, injection and blow moulding machinery. The cost of repairing a screw or barrel damaged by just one larger piece of metal is enormous compared to value added for a Model CF Separator. This metal separator delivers operational reliability, even at high throughputs. The Model CF Metal Separator features automatic selfcalibration and monitoring. It is a fully automatic separation process with adjustable scanning sensitivity and rejects duration. The Model CF works so quickly that metal particles are constantly removed from free-falling granulate not only at the initial fill, but also at subsequent top-ups. The metal contamination is discharged into a reject container with a fast acting, air-powered separating slide. Model CF Metal Separators are available in four pipe sizes from approximately 2.9" to 5.9" in diameter. Features & benefits: Detects and removes even the smallest metal particles from regrind and virgin material; Reduces machine downtimes and costly repairs, providing a rapid return on investment.

Power Supply
Balluff has introduced an intelligent, energy-saving power supply especially for use in wind energy equipment. The semipotted device with an efficiency rating of 93% is designed for high shock and vibration loads. It has long service life of nearly 20 years with a MTBF of 800,000 hours. A key feature: this is the first power supply which can be connected directly to the generator voltage without the need for an intermediate transformer. Also, it has unique optical indicators which display the status and condition of the unit. Since it tracks dynamic loads, it can be operated continuously even under high load conditions. Special sensors in combination with a microcontroller continuously monitor wear factors in the power supply such as temperature, overload, faults and other conditions. Intelligent evaluation of these parameters then gives the user an overview of the status of the unit for implementing maintenance measures, thereby drastically reducing the probability of failure of the overall system. Its coloured LEDs in traffic light colours provide the user with continuous information about the current load level, the stress level as well as the life time, a forecast of remaining life expectancy. The indicators are bright enough to be seen and interpreted from several meters away. The usual 3-phase transformer used in wind power equipment can be dispensed with, thereby saving money. Thanks to its broad input range of 380 - 690 V, the switched-mode power supply can be connected directly to the generator voltage of the wind turbine.

Air & Gas Purification System

The EcoScrub Air & Gas Purification System from Bry-Air (Asia) is a cost-effective solution to the problems of corrosion and toxic gas control. Its unique process not only cleans the contaminated air of suspended particles and corrosive gases butalso eliminates odour, making the working environment healthy for equipments. The ultimate solution to corrosion lies in gaseous filtration which involves passing the contaminant-laden air stream through a bed of dry media placed in a properly designed housing. The principle of air purification is simple: the contaminated air passes through pre-filters which retain dust and particles, and then the required chemical media stages (combination of activated carbon and activated alumina impregnated with proprietary chemicals) which chemically destroys any remaining gaseous contaminants. It is a simple, yet costeffective solution to a problem that can be very costly from a production standpoint. Besides a complete line of gaseous filtration products ranging from filter media to absorber housings, Bry-Air has the technology in gaseous adsorption such as Ammonia-Gas Phase Activated Carbon process which greatly increases the adsorption capacities of activated carbon. Applications: Oil Refineries, Cement, Fertilizer, Chemical, Textile, Power, IT, Pharmaceutical, Leather, Food Processing Industry, Sewage Treatment, etc. Key features: Self contained re-circulatory unit up to 3Stages, both in Horizontal and Vertical configuration; Removes organic and inorganic contaminants from air and supplies air free of contaminant gases; Microprocessor based Digital Control Card (Optional).

And Other Lessons from an Accidental Manager Hank Gilman

You Can't Fire Everyone

Books support us in our solitude and keep us from being a burden to ourselves - Jeremy Collier

Plenty of managers never asked, expected, or trained to be put in charge of other people. But when it happens, these accidental bosses often find that learning to manage is like learning to swim by being dropped into the deep end of the pool. Hank Gilman knows what that's like. As a top editor for Fortune, Newsweek, and the Boston Globe, he has helped nurture some outstanding talent. His success can be attributed largely to his management style, which allows him to treat his employees like, well, humans, while holding them accountable. But he was far from a natural when it was time to take charge. Gilman shares the lessons he's learned-through trial and error-during his two decades as a manager. Writing in a warm but no-nonsense voice, he offers straight-up advice on the ins and outs of hiring, firing, motivating, and dealing with cranky superstars. Gilman argues that your employees should always come firstand that managing down, as opposed to managing up, will ultimately lead to a successful career as a boss. About the author: Hank Gilman is the deputy managing editor of Fortune. Over his career, he has worked at The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and The Beaufort Gazette (South Carolina). He has also been a regular commentator on The Nightly Business Report on PBS.

In praise of the book: The reader should be able to pluck a few gems from the book without trying too hard. I especially enjoyed his "Director's Cut." This was the final chapter that Gilman said he could not find place anywhere else in the book. The outtakes may have been the best part. -Scott Huizenga on Amazon

I read this book in a day in a half and then gave it to someone in management at my operation. I think it should be required reading for any manager, especially those in the communications field, of which Gilman gives great examples of what to do and what not to do when managing people. -Chris S. Roush

It can help you get your new management career off on a better footing or help you clean up some problem spots in your present management gig. Or help you learn what you need to know to move from individual contributor to that management cubicle you have had your eye on. - Craig Matteson

Protecting Intellectual Property Rights and Promoting Economic Growth in India

Amir Ullah Khan
The recent economic downturn and the ensuing reordering of the global economic order has underlined beyond doubt the value of innovation in driving sustained growth. For instance, India now is firmly established as a player in the knowledge economy. Since the economic reforms that began nearly two decades ago, the Indian economy has been undergoing an important transition--from a closed to an open one; to one where knowledge based production of goods and services is commanding a significant portion of the economy. India has also moved away from a static economy that was characterized by a status quo-ist government control to one where economic liberalism is the driving force, and one where innovation in products, processes, technologies and systems is critical for the profitable sustenance of productive entities. This structural transformation of the Indian economy is the result of many factors, and each has involved the interplay of international forces, influences, domestic abilities and efforts. The role of government, domestic industry, international firms, research institutions, nongovernment organizations, and, of course, private individuals has changed significantly in the past few years, and one expects this to continue in the future. The direction is towards lower government command and control in all sectors and greater role of the market place in creating the right set of incentives for all. All this is in the context of an economy that is becoming more and more integrated with the international economy, and where free movement of knowledge and technology goes hand-in-hand with the flow of financial and human capital. This article looks at the role that intellectual property rights play in promoting innovation and therefore driving growth in the knowledge economy. In the open economy of today, each entity needs to have a competitive advantage. In other words, each firm needs to carve a niche for itself to survive competition. Intellectual Property Rights enable the firm to protect its innovations and also capitalize on them to enhance revenues. Indias stance on TRIPS has been one that has seen various twists and turns, from being a diffident and hesitant signatory to the TRIPS agreement to now being a strong votary. In the Indian context, a large portion of the initial IPR regime in independent India was due to British legacy. The Indian Patent Act of 1856 was based on the British Patent Law of 1852. In this Act a patent holder was granted some privileges for a period of 14 years. The Indian patent law has undergone many amendments since then. Recently, amendments were made in 1999, 2002 and 2005. The Patents (Amendment) Act 2005 has been effective since January 2005 and is compatible with the TradeRelated Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) Agreement under WTO. The Copyright Act, 1957, which was essentially based on the Copyright Act of the United Kingdom 1956, has been effective since January 1958. This Act has undergone various

amendments since then in keeping with the times. The World Economic Forum, in recognition of the importance of innovation in the global economic order, calculates the Global Innovation Index (GII). The GII assigns scores to 130 countries based on various innovation input and output pillars. The global leader in innovation is the USA. This does not come as a surprise as the USA has been the leading innovator and has a legacy of over 100 years in innovation. In second place is Germany. While Germany maintained its position at 2nd in the rankings in comparison with last year, Sweden has risen in the ranking from 12th in 2007 to 3rd in 2008. This is a result of increased inputs in the innovation systems in the country. The United Kingdom fellfrom 3rd to 4th slot. Also, Singapore rose from 7th in the previous years ranking to 5th in 2008. The other big gainer in the top 10 rankings is South Korea which rose from 19thto 6th. The big losers have been Japan, which fell from 4th to 9th and France which went from 5th to 19th in the rankings. researchers and the The human capacity pillar measures the availability of

support provided to them by the system in terms of training, expenditure and environment. South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan are the non-OECD countries that are leaders in this respect. The presence of Indonesia, Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka and China in the top 40 countries in terms of human capacity only corroborates the fact these emerging economies are the ones to watch out for in the future. The clear leader in terms of the human capacity to innovate, however, is the USA followed by Denmark and South Korea. One direct impact of innovation in an economy is that the awareness regarding technology and, therefore, its usage increases. This creates a market for high technology goods as well as other services to support the economic activities generated by the emergence of this new market. Thus innovation would result in the emergence of services such as insurance and financial services, research and training services, etc. The other impact of innovation would be an increase in the export of technology related goods. This output pillar measures these effects of innovation. With respect to knowledge, South East Asia does well with many countries featuring in the top 30. India, China and Indonesia feature at the 23rd, 28th and 29th places respectively in the knowledge rankings while South Korea features at the top slot. Interestingly, all the Asian countries show a significant increase in their knowledge scores over the previous year. The innovation efficiency is an attempt to understand the precise drivers of innovation in the country. The innovation efficiency is the ratio of the innovation outputs and the innovation inputs. Thus, if a country has a high innovation index but low innovation efficiency it indicates that the thrust to innovation is on the inputs side and the outputs from the innovation process do not match the inputs into the system. However, a system where the outputs are higher with fewer inputs in the innovation process would rank higher in terms of efficiency. It may be noted here that while this is not an accurate measure of the efficacy of the innovation system, it does serve as an indicator of the emerging economies in of the Nano. Indian firms have been innovating on a large scale in the interest of their own businesses. Most of these innovations have essentially been directed toward making products and services cheaper and more accessible to a greater portion of our population. Undoubtedly, any innovation which involves design of products requires large investments in terms of time and resources. Therefore, these innovations are more likely to take place in large business houses. In the case of India, innovation has grown significantly in the recent years. Patents filed in Delhi and Maharashtra together account for more than 50% of the patents filed in India. terms of innovation. It is interesting to note that Brazil, India, China and Indonesia have high innovation efficiency even though they do not rank very high in terms of the Global Innovation Index. Innovation is often based on making the user experience better or more pleasurable. These innovations may be to enhance the appeal of the product or service according to emotional, cultural or social sensibilities or convenience of use. There are many examples of innovations in India which catered to Indian market conditions and sensibilities. In the 1980s, CavinKare revolutionized the sale of shampoo by launching 8 ml sachets of shampoo. Another similar innovation is pre-paid mobile services. A very visible innovation has been in the field of retail. While the concept of discount stores has existed in various countries, in India the concept of organized retail was limited to luxury products and services with a focus on ambience. Pantaloons Retail (India) Ltd. launched the Big Bazaar stores changing this conventional view of organized retail. Possibly the most talked about innovation in recent times is the new small car by the Tatas, the Nano. Aimed attapping the middle class which currently purchases two wheelers, the Nano was designed keeping in mind Indian conditions and sensibilities along with the most important factors in this segment, the price-value proposition. The Tatas have filed for 34 patents associated with the design It is interesting to note that there appears to be no significant change in the trends in innovation across the country. The emergence of cities like Gurgaon, Bangalore and Hyderabad in the field of information technology has not led to an increase in the number of patents filed in these cities relative to other cities. One possible reason for this is that while there is research and development taking place in different parts of the country, the patent application is filed by the administration of the firm, which is invariably based in either Delhi or Mumbai. An analysis of the number of patent applications by field of applications shows that Chemicals and Drugs categories account for more than a third of the total patents filed in India since liberalization. Though there appears no clear trends in any one category, there is clearly a steep rise in the number of patent applications in the Mechanical and Chemical categories in the year 2005-06. While we cannot make any conclusions based on one data point, the sustained upward trend across categories is a positive indicator in terms of innovation in India.

Right People and Right People Processes

Right People and Right People Processes are key factors for the success of any business. While it is important for most organisations and industries, I strongly believe that it is the single most important factor for Indian health and hospitality sector, with the stage of evolution that they are in at the end of the first decade of this millennium. In this issue, I will deal with the subject of selection, development, retention and growth of Right People, I have experienced and observed. The two pillars of Customer Service and Right People processes are directly correlated and have a direct impact on the success of organizations, assuming that, primarily customer value creation is the raison detre and will cause the creation of wealth for the owners. What is important, however, is that the following two types of concerns be adequately addressed and their solutions internalised before any meaningful outcome can be expected: - Once I train my people, they will get picked up by someone else. My entire investment will go waste. Then why should I train them? -Yes, there is total agreement, it is very important to have the Right People. But probe a little deeper and one finds that an understanding of the characteristics of Right People is missing. In any case, for whatever time that an untrained person (whether new or old, senior or junior) stays in an organisation, he underperforms and that itself is an opportunity cost which one does not realise. An untrained person will remain a sub-optimal contributor for a much longer period (assuming that he will learn on the job) than it would take to bring him up to speed through developmental inputs. So, development and growth of employees, yields returns in terms of both financial investment and effective time spent on the job; motivation, additional commitment, retention and subsequent efficiencies are icing on the cake! The other thing is the kind of impact that lack of well trained people can have on customer experience. We, as a family, enrolled as privilege members (obviously at a fee) of a well known group of health care clinics. The ambience, equipment and doctors are really very good. Rates are high and the usual greed of excessive tests is there as with any healthcare service provider these days. While it was our conscious decision to enroll with the clinic and I am not blaming anyone or complaining about this, one does expect a little special treatment, or say, atleast an acknowledgement that they do have members in the privilege group. However, far from acknowledging one as privilege members, most of the staff is not even aware of the existence of such membership, forget benefits associated with it. On one occasion, when a staff member showed complete ignorance about the benefits of the membership, I asked to be allowed to speak to the duty manager. The duty managers response was Sir, he is new .. So, was my immediate response, you dont train/educate your new staff on all the processes? It is surprising that new staff was not made aware of the programme directed towards a supposedly loyal/high value group of privilege members. I am sure the formation of this group must have been a part of a core marketing strategy somewhere on the upper floors of their head office in Ivory Towers. But this was not the only time such a thing happened. I continuously sensed lack of education and developmental inputs at the staff level. So while a lot of investment would have gone in building the ultra modern clinics, staff interaction makes me keep longing for my neighbourhood doctors personal touch and at much lower costs. If only the high end clinic could clone (not proposing propagation of the same in technical terms) the neighbourhood doctors personal behaviour or explain the relevance of the strategy behind introducing privilege membership to its staff, my frame of mind would have been so different today. And then there was this young employee of an airline which promises to be on time always and also lives up to its promise! This was a stray incident when, due to circumstances beyond anyones control, the HyderabadDelhi flight was delayed by several hours. There were angry outbursts by aggressive Punjabi passengers, but the poor employee, obviously had no training at handling such situations. That one incident would have put some doubt (rightly or wrongly) in so many of the airlines (well earned) passengers minds. Employee Development, then, for those who say They will get picked up by someone else. Why should I develop them?, is nothing but creating your own clones or explaining the relevance of your strategy to your employees, so that when a customer walks in, you can be assured that he/she will get the same treatment as you would have given, had you been able to be present at all locations, all the time, for all customers. Just plain & simple!

While the latter, is a full fledged subject of research and it may not be possible to touch on it here, what surprises me most is the former .. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes,
when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you

RFID will transform supply chain business

RFID tracking in general could help improve the integrity of the supply chain. By clearly identifying and tracking products, companies can maintain much tighter control over legitimate shipments and ensure the safety and security of the goods in their bid to reduce costs, optimise supply chain processes and improve productivity and profits. The benefits that RFID technology offers are manifold and include improved efficiency and visibility, lower costs, lower inventory levels yet constant product availability, better asset utilisation and increased sales through better out-of-stock goods management. This technology has possibilities of being deployed in a big way within India by virtue of its applications in detection of counterfeit merchandise, asset tracking, and traceability across national/global supply chains, arresting of pilferages/shrinkages, enhanced supply chain efficiencies, wastage control in supply chains. EPC-based RFID technology provides solutions for just-intime (JIT) manufacturing, mass customisation, "zero error production", reduced cycle time, stock management of rawmaterials / finished goods, warehouse management, sourcing and procurement, assembly, order processing, distribution and transportation, et al. With its varied usage across sectors; RFID can be termed as one of the most promising and anticipated technologies in recent years poised for nothing less than complete transformation in the supply chain. Is EPC global India the only organisation for providing International standards in RFID? Yes, our role needs to be clearly understood. We are not manufacturers of RFID software or hardware. We provide standards to which hardware/ software vendors manufacture and develop their products such that they are interoperable and conform to international standards in RFID. How does RFID help the industries especially manufacturing and retail? Could you detail the impact on various sectors? A: RFID-enabled systems providing inventory data to sales clerk can provide replenishment and throughput data to store managers, buyers and Supply Chain specialists. Tighter visibility into store inventory should result in fewer inventory write-offs (outdated, seasonal or discontinued merchandise), and enable store managers to potentially shift inventory to stores where products are selling more quickly. In the apparel industry, where buyers make decisions as much as six months prior to the selling season, adjustments to inventory and stocking can make the difference between a profit and loss on a product category. One area of concern for retailer is shrinkage (theft), which costs retailers an estimated two per cent of sales on an annual basis and losses due to spoilage / expiration, obsolescence, misplacement and markdown caused by poor merchandise management, all of which could be reduced by the better monitoring of objects and their handlers through RFID. Retail worldwide is a key driver to adoption of EPC- based RFID technology. According to a recent survey, 70 per cent of retailers with annual sales above five billion are investing in RFID and will implement some form of the technology in the next six to twelve months. International buyers and retailers like Wal-Mart have already directed their suppliers to adopt RFID on their consignments at the case / pallet levels. Exporters do not have choice they have to adopt if they want to be Wal-Mart customers.

For retail, the real power of this technology results from associating unique identifiers with other information of interest from fields in a database that pertains to the item. Just a few examples as per retail application are: Date of manufacture, time spent in transit, location of distribution centre holding the item, name of the last person to handle the item, amount for which the item was sold, payment method used in buying the item, expiration date, last date of service and warranty period.

Technology
On the manufacturing for example, the automotive sector has piloted use of this technology. If you need to track the history of a car as it enters for servicing, repairs etc, you can do that with the help of an RFID tag, which will be placed in the car. RFID also helps to differentiate whether the parts for the car are counterfeit or genuine. Indian automotive is seriously looking at adopting RFID for a number of, mission critical applications. Pharmaceutical industry RFID technology can also be introduced in the healthcare sector. Drug shipments will be scanned down the supply chain, from manufacturer to pharmacy. Authenticity of shipments will be verified and information made available to parties. This can prevent products from falling into the hands of counterfeiters, who could dilute or alter the drugs and then foist them on unsuspecting pharmacies and consumers. The pharmaceutical industry has found itself swallowing a bitter pill: drug counterfeiting is on the rise. "Many of these fake, diluted, and mislabeled medications pose a health threat to patients and a financial risk to manufacturers and others in the healthcare industry. Counterfeit drugs are a huge problem not only to our society but also to the pharma industry globally. The annual cost of counterfeiting to the pharmaceutical industry is around $68 billion. It ranges between 15-30 per cent of all medicines distributed and consumed worldwide. As a major exporter and manufacturer of pharma drugs and other medical products, it affects the brand equity of India in global markets. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended RFID as the best way to thwart illegal drug trafficking. About 14.3 per cent of unapproved medicines entering the US market are from India. It is in the interest of the Indian company to adopt the new technology, since it helps trace their medicine supplies, and hence check counterfeits. It is also effective in the management of goods close to the expiry date.

The USFDA may consider making this technology mandatory. Their prime concern is the safety of consumers. Indian drug companies need to act quickly, if this technology becomes mandatory in different markets, they will have no choice. This is not as easy as slap and ship. It takes some time to adopt this technology. Aviation industry With EPC RFID chips, chances of luggage being misplaced are eliminated by' Airlines. Even if it does happen, it can be tracked easily. It increases the speed of baggage transfers. And with standardised chips, the information can be made use of in multi-modal transportation. Shipping industry Thousands of containers get piled up in Inland Container Deport and at Seaports during congestion or strikes. RFID can help to locate the exact container and identify the contents inside them. RFID also facilitates security and safety of shipping containers through secure electronic seals, now required under International mandates of US Customs & Homeland Security under (CSI) Container Security Initiative etc.

Testing Centres Electronic Product Code (EPC) in global Supply Chains is today awarded to four RFID Testing Facilities in Europe, Taiwan and the United States the first EPC global Performance Test Center Accreditation Marks. India does-not have any testing facility but there is an opportunity for Indian IT companies and research institutes to offer such testing facilities in India. They will require to be accredited by EPCglobal India in line with International requirements. This will greatly help Indian Industry, particularly exporters in ensuring readability of their EPC/RFID tagged products and ready acceptance by international buyers like Wal-Mart, Metro, Tesco etc.
