Exams Therewillbetwoexamsduringthesemester.Thefirstexamwillbeamidtermfocusedonissuesdiscussedfrom ourdiscussionsinthefirstfiveclassesontheBurketextbookandotherrequiredreadingmaterialslistedforeach of these classes. The final exam will focus on the skills and concepts learned during the second half of the semester. FinalGrade Thefinalgradeforthesemesterwillbedeterminedasfollows: 20%:MidtermExamination 50%:ClassExercises(fourexercisesat10pointseach)* 10%:ClassParticipation* 20%:FinalExamination *All students are required to participate in the discussion portion of the first half of the semester and during the class exercises of the second half of the semester. Each student is permitted two absences. Additionalabsenceswillresultinanyorallofthefollowingactions:adeductionintheclassparticipation portionofthefinalgrade,adeductionintheclassexerciseportionofthefinalgradeorafinalgradeofF. Of the seven class exercises discussed in this syllabus, each student will be assigned five. If you know aheadoftimethatyouwillmissaparticularclass,pleaseletmeknowbyFebruary20soIdonotassign youaparticularclassexercise. ClassExercises The second half of the semester will focus on a series of class exercises, which are designed to both hone the studentsskillsdescribedaboveundertheSkillsparagraphaboveandapplytheplanninglessonslearnedinthe firsthalfofthesemester.Foreachexercise,onestudentwillbeassignedastheapplicantandonewillbeassigned asthestaffplannerwiththeCity.TherestoftheclasswillactastheCommissiondeterminingtheoutcomefor eachcase.EachstudentwillbeassignedoneoftheserolesforfourofthesevenpostMidtermclasses.Theserolls berotatedeachclasssoallstudentswillengageinbothrolls.Topicsofdiscussionarelistedinthesyllabusbelow. Iwillemailyoumaterialsandspecificassignmentspriortoeachclass.Thestudentsintherolesofapplicantand staffplannerwillbeexpectedtopresenttheirfindingsinpowerpointformattotheCommission.Studentsshould trytovisitthesitetotakephotographsforthepowerpointpresentations.Thegradesfortheseclassexerciseswill be based on the quality of these powerpoint presentations and on the verbal delivery given at the mock Commission meeting. We will meet in the City Council Chambers of the Memphis City Hall, so projection equipmentwillbeavailable.ThestudentsactingasCommissionwillsitontheactualMemphisCityCouncildais. ClassLocation WewillmeetinMcCordHallduringthefirsthalfofthesemester.Afterthemidterm,wewillmeetintheCouncil ChambersoftheMemphisCityHall,locatedat125N.MainStreet.Iwillensurethatyouallhaveparkingspaces soyoucanparkintheundergroundgarageofCityHall.ThisgarageisaccessfromFrontStreet,midwaybetween PoplarandAdams.CouncilChambersareonthemainfloorofCityHall,oronefloorabovetheparkinggarage.
