Caution Notice In case of fire, well-maintained early-warning smoke detectors will give an alarm long before non-metallic coverings become combustible.
However, Alcatel Canada Wire advises that: Non-metallic coverings of electrical cables can burn and may transmit fire when ignited. Burning non-metallic coverings may emit
acid gases which are toxic and may generate dense smoke. Emission of acid gases may corrode metal in the vicinity; e.g. sensitive instruments and reinforcing rods in concrete.
Conductor Shielding
A conductor shield is provided on all cables in this catalogue. The standard conductor shield on Alcatel Canada Wire ENERGEX-SP cables is extruded semiconducting crosslinked polyolefin (XLPO), which meets or exceeds the AEIC, ICEA and CSA requirements shown at right. In addition, Alcatel Canada Wire offers cable with supersmooth conductor shielding, which enhances the life expectancy of the cable.

Insulation
The standard insulation on Alcatel Canada Wire ENERGEX-SP Cables is unfilled crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE), meeting or exceeding the requirements of AEIC CS5, ICEA S-66524 and CSA C68.3 as shown at right. Using Alcatel Canada Wires EXELCURE process, the conductor shield, insulation and insulation shield are true-triple extruded and cured together in a sealed, dry curing system. All insulating compounds are dispensed through an Extra Clean Compound Handling System to minimize contamination and increase cable life expectancy. Alcatel Canada Wire also offers treeretardant crosslinked polyethylene (TRRequirements for XLPE Insulation Unaged tensile strength Elongation at rupture Aged 168 h at 121C: Tensile strength Elongation Heat distortion at 121C: 4/0 AWG and smaller Larger than 4/0 AWG Moisture absorption at 75C: Dielectric constant after 24 h Increase in capacitance 114 days 714 days Stability factor after 14 days Solvent extraction after 20 h Power factor at room temperature Insulation resistance: K at 15C

Ampacity The ampacities given in the tables below are based on the following conditions: Conductor temperature 90C Ambient earth temperature 20C Earth interface temperature not limited Ambient air temperature 40C Direct burial depth 0.9 m (3 ft.) with cables spaced 19 cm centre-to-centre in one horizontal layer of 3 cables Depth to top of duct bank 0.8 m (2.5 ft.) Where shields are grounded at more than one point, the ampacities shown above should be adjusted to take into consideration the heating due to shield currents. For buried installations, the values shown may be limited by the maximum earth interface temperature due to soil
moisture migration. Knowledge of local soil conditions is necessary for the determination of the proper earth interface temperature to be used. Typical values are between 50C and 60C, which experience has indicated should be satisfactory for most types of soils.

The self reactance of a single cable is: XL = 0.0754 ln(rn/GMR) ohm/km at 60 Hz (= 0.023 ln(rn/GMR) ohm/1000 ft) where rn = mean radius of the shield The reactance of the shield is: XL = 0.0754 ln(GMD/rn) ohm/km at 60 Hz (= 0.023 ln(GMD/rn) ohm/1000 ft) Capacitance
Short Circuit Capacity The short circuit capacity of phase conductors and shields is limited by their heat capacity and by the maximum temperature permitted in the adjacent cable materials. The temperature limits established by Alcatel Canada Wire are: Phase conductors 250C Shield 200C The following equation is used to calculate short circuit capacity: lsc = A
The capacitance of single conductor, insulated and shielded cables is: C = 0.0556 e/ln(D/d) F/km (= 0.0169 e/ln(D/d) F/1000 ft) where e = dielectric constant of the insulation (= 2.3 for XLPE) D = diameter over the insulation d = diameter under the insulation Capacitive reactance, Xc = 1.0 x 10+6 2 fC ohm/km (or ohm/1000 ft), is usually ignored in cables up to about 20 km (12 miles) in length. Note that capacitive reactance is inversely proportional to the cable length. Charging current, lch = 2 fC Eo (mA/km or mA/1000 ft), where Eo is the line-to-neutral voltage, or applied test voltage in kV.

Installation
Pulling Tension The maximum tension applied to a cable during installation is limited in order to prevent damage or distortion of cable components which could reduce the life or reliability of the cable. The method of pulling is significant in that different methods will result in different stresses on critical cable components for the same overall tension Alcatel Canada Wire recommends that, wherever possible, the cable be pulled by means of the conductor, aided where feasible by a grip over the outer jacket.
The tension developed in any straight section of a duct is calculated as follows: T = 9.81 LWF where T = pulling force, Newtons L = section length, metres W = cable weight, kg/metre f = coefficient of dynamic friction The tension developed in a bend is calculated as follows: T = T1 e(fa) where T = tension leaving bend T1 = tension at bend entrance e = base of natural logarithms (2.71828) f = coefficient of dynamic friction a = angle of bend, radians
At any bend the tension should not exceed 22.5 kN per metre of radius of the bend. When designing the duct layout, it is recommended that the bends be concentrated near the end from which the cable is to be pulled. This practice will result in lower tensions. In some cases, the tensions resulting from alternative directions should be calculated. Both the cable and pulling rope should be well lubricated with a good commercial cable lubricant following the lubricant suppliers instructions. The recommendations given above are intended to cover a wide range of pulling conditions. It is possible, under ideal conditions, and with experienced supervision, to exceed these limits. For further guidance, see IEEE Paper 84 T&D 365-3, or contact Alcatel Canada Wire. Coefficients of Dynamic Friction with Lubricant (low Sidewall Pressure)

Field Testing
A high-voltage DC test made before placing a new cable system in service will normally reveal gross imperfections such as mechanical damage during installation or improperly made accessories. It is not expected to reveal deterioration due to ageing in service. At any time during installation, a Proof Test may be made at a voltage not exceeding that shown in the table applied for five consecutive minutes. After installation and before the cable is placed in regular service, an Acceptance Test may be made at a voltage not exceeding that shown in the table applied for 15 consecutive minutes. After the cable has been completely installed and placed in regular service, a Maintenance Test may be made at any time within the first five years at a voltage not exceeding that shown in the table applied for five consecutive minutes. Recent research has shown that the loss of dielectric strength caused by normal wet ageing will shorten cable life when subjected to DC testing. After that time, such testing is not recommended. These tests should only be undertaken by persons familiar with the use of the equipment and appropriate safety precautions. If any equipment is included beyond the cable terminations, the dielectric strength of such equipment must be taken into consideration when establishing the test voltage. The maximum permissible leakage current can be calculated with the formula below. Note that this does not include terminal leakage.
