TEXTILE ENGINEERING, Laurea Magistrale (Master of science-level of the Bologna process)

Academic Year 2011/12

First School of Engineering Campus: TORINO Duration: 2 years Degree class LM-22: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Taught in English Educational objectives The aim of the course is to create professional figures who are able to manage activities related to obtaining textile products with new features and functions, and creating new textile production processes that will promote the revival of an industrial sector subject to strong competition from developing countries. The programme provides students with tools for conceptualizing, designing, developing and operating innovative processes and related facilities and equipment, as well as creating new products and defining their production cycles. This requires training in the areas of process, plant and materials engineering, supplemented by specific mechanical and textile expertise enabling graduates to undertake activities in all areas related to the textile industry. To achieve this end students will acquire mastery of the methodological aspects of process engineering and the textile industry, based on advanced notions of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and kinetics both in the absence and presence of chemical reaction, the fundamental techniques of control and safety analysis with specific applications to the textiles sector, and specialized knowledge of polymeric and textile materials. The training, supplemented with laboratory experience and internships in industry, enables the MSc graduate in Textile Engineering to: - produce physical/mathematical models to analyse characteristics and performance of equipment, plants and processes for the production of products and materials, with particular reference to the entire textile production chain; - conceive and propose new textile materials with new functions; - design systems and processes as well as plan and conduct research and development in the textile field; - study and apply advanced methods for the regulation and control of processes; - develop and apply both standard and innovative technologies for the creation of new textile products meeting the demand for safety and environmental compatibility. Target roles and competencies The professional skills of MSc graduates will be applied in: - companies in the textile, clothing and fashion, textile machinery, and textile-chemical sectors; - chemical companies in the broadest sense, where the graduate can work both in design, and in research and development; - firms engaged in technology transfer and consultancy, with particular reference to small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in textiles, regarding problems of manuf... Educational activities description The programme is geared to forming a highly specialised professional figure, with extensive expertise in all areas of the textile production chain (from yarn to finished garment or final technical textile product). It is divided into several thematic blocks: - scientific and methodological complements to chemical-textile processes - materials and textile processes engineering - final exam The first year will begin with study of complementa...
