Every December, The Conductor
orchestrates a symphony of Christmas
cheer.
The sparkle in
his eyes tell a won-
drous tale of an elfin
toymaker and eight
flying reindeer.
The gentle
strength in his
handshake sends
the message he will
safeguard youthful
dreams.
And, most faith-
fully, the soulful
spirit in his voice
tells the story of a
marvelous, magical
train that delivers
good tidings to small
communities from
Grand Rapids to
Manistee.
Wayne Dault II is
The Conductor of
the Marquette Rails
Santa Express. He
IS to the rails what
Santa Claus is to the
North Pole, what
Frosty is to a blanket
of new-fallen snow,
and what an angel
is to the top of a
Christmas tree.
I cant believe Ive been doing this
for only a few years, Dault said last week
when he and his Santa Express rolled
into Manistee County. It seems like Ive
been doing it for a lot longer. I hope to do
this for a long, long time, yet to come.
As dozens and dozens of children in
Stronach and later in the City of Manistee
pushed their way to the front to get an up-
close-and-personal look at Santa and Mrs.
Claus recently, many others immediately
moved toward Dault The Conductor.
And why not?
Dressed in his stylish railroad con-
ductor uniform and supporting a black,
neatly-trimmed mustache, the 34-year-old
Ludington man is the beloved reflection
of the same character made popular by
Tom Hanks in the 2006 movie, The Polar
Express.
So many people, young and old, ask
me if thats the char-
acter Im playing, the
one out of The Polar
Express, Dault said.
And though I tell
them that I certainly
did pattern some of
my uniform around
that character, Im
really just being
myself. Im my own
person.
Im a real-life
railroad conductor,
thats my job. And I
love it, I absolutely
love it.
As Manistee
Chief of Police David
Bachman watched
dozens of area resi-
dents young and
old, alike gathered
around Santa and
Mrs. Claus, and
Dault, the longtime
law enforcement offi-
cer shook his head in
amazement.
This is great, its
really nice, he said
of Marquette Rails
Santa Express.
The Conductor
sure looks like the real thing, doesnt he?
Yes, he does. Wayne Dault II does
indeed look like the real thing the real
Christmas Conductor.
Youve seen his
friendly face a
hundred times
If you were to stand in a room filled
with a hundred people you didnt know
from Adam, your eyes would immediately

Wayne Dault II is a real-life conductor with the Ludington-based Marquette
Rail. Each December he dresses the part of the The Conductor for the Santa
Express, which visits Stronach and the City of Manistee on its annual 14-city,
130-mile journey. Here, Dault looks out from the caboose of the Santa Express
as it leaves one of its many Christmas stops.

Short days and cooler
weather can be a stress-
ful time of year, especially
for older people who are
at higher risk for common
winter ailments. But there
are steps you can take to
stay safe and healthy.
Prevent the Flu
Its not too late to get
vaccinated!
Seniors are at especially
high risk for developing
complications from the
flu. According to Flu.gov,
ninety percent of flu-related
deaths and more than half
of flu-related hospitaliza-
tions occur in people aged
65 and older.
So do your best to avoid
getting it in the first place.
Get vaccinated. The flu
vaccine is widely available
this year and free under
Medicare.
Always remember to
wash your hands frequently
and thoroughly, and avoid
contact with sick people.
Walk Carefully
Avoid wet slippery
patches when walking out-
doors. Many pharmacies
and grocery stores make
deliveries these days. But
if a winter wonderland is
in your cards this season,
remember to walk carefully
and wear shoes with proper
traction. You might even
consider using a cane for
stability.
Those with osteoporosis
or weakened bones are at
a higher risk for fractures
from falls. But you can keep
your bones strong by get-
ting plenty of calcium and
vitamin D, avoiding alcohol
and cigarettes and getting
regular exercise.
Stay Positive
The short days of winter
leave many feeling blue. If
you have seasonal affective
disorder, or just a case of
the blahs, you might con-
sider talking to your doctor
about light therapy which
involves regular exposure
to a bright fluorescent lamp
that mimics natural sun-
light. Stay positive by filling
up your social calendar,
keeping in regular touch
with family and friends,
getting exercise, and listen-
ing to upbeat music.

Theres nothing cozier
than sitting indoors with
a steaming cup of hot
chocolate on a cool winter
day. But when the weather
outside is frightful, losing
power can be uncomfort-
able, if not downright dan-
gerous.
So how can you help
ensure your family a warm
and safe winter season?
Prepare
Preparedness is your
best defense in an emer-
gency situation. Whether
you expect an outage or
not, you should install
storm windows and insu-
late your home properly for
the winter.
Pack an emergency kit
that includes nonperishable
food and water. The guide-
line is about one gallon of
water per person per day.
And dont forget to have
a manual can opener on
hand for canned food.
Keep a first aid kit
handy and teach all the
members of your family
how to use its contents. A
flashlight, a battery oper-
ated radio, spare batteries,
and a supply of your medi-
cations should round out
your emergency kit.
Prevent
You can avoid the
danger of an outage with
a standby generator that
links directly into your
natural gas system. The
generator will turn on auto-
matically during a power
failure or blackout. And
with a natural gas genera-
tor, you dont have to worry
about running out of fuel
like you would with a gaso-
line or diesel-powered one.
An added benefit of
these types of generators is
that they can serve as eco-
friendly back-ups for off-
the-grid homes powered by
alternative energy sources.
More information can be
found by visiting www.
comfortableresponsible.org
and clicking on genera-
tors.
Protect
When the power goes
out, use common sense
and cover up if its really
cold. Layers are best, start-
ing with long underwear.
Dont forget to wear a hat
because most body heat is
lost through the top of the
head.
Mittens and thick socks
will protect your digits. If
you experience a loss of
feeling in your extremities
or they appear unusually
pale, seek medical atten-
tion right away. Likewise,
uncontrollable shivering,
slurred speech and disori-
entation are signs of hypo-
thermia and deserve your
immediate attention.
Remember, the best
protection from a power
outage is prevention by
relying on a backup genera-
tor as an alternate energy
source. But if your power
does go out, make sure you
are prepared with neces-
sities and snuggle up with
loved ones.

Not only are outages an inconvenience, but that can
be avoided by following some simple steps.

People dont often
think about how opti-
mism impacts their
lifestyle, career and rela-
tionships. But a positive
attitude can help you
avoid stressful situations,
maintain better health,
and may even allow you
to heal more quickly
when you arent feeling
well, according to some
experts.
Optimism and the
desire to be successful
are the basis for a per-
sons happiness and good
health, asserts Elena
Korneeva, a psychophysi-
ologist and author of
the new book Breath of
Life.
As a specialist,
Korneeva promotes a
happier, healthier life
with these guiding prin-
ciples:
n Joyful inspired and
outspoken people make
great company. These
traits will attract people
to you in both profession-
al and personal settings.
n Laugh. People with
a good sense of humor
are the life of any party,
at any age and in any
social stratum.
n One who can sin-
cerely laugh at his or her
own mistakes can over-
come most difficulties. A
sense of humor is a trait of
a harmonious person.
n Make an effort to truly
understand and empathize
with your conversation
partners.
n Dont be afraid of
situations that havent even
happened yet. By avoiding
fear of the unknown, you
can better focus on a posi-
tive solution, rather than
the problem.
n Optimism and humor
will make you a better par-
ent. With these tools, your
children will bring you
joy rather than try your
patience. Positive and cre-
ative parenting yields posi-
tive and creative children.
n An integral part of
success is a healthy life-
style, absent of bad habits.
Eat varied, small meals
four-to-five times a day, get
sound sleep, and take part
in sports and leisure activi-
ties you love.
n There are no bound-
aries or limits to your
pursuit of self-perfection.
Success is often very close
at hand, but by emphasiz-
ing difficulties in our lives,
we neglect to focus on our
strengths.
With optimism we fill
our life with new meaning,
and it helps us find a way
out of a circle of troubles,
says Korneeva. The key to
happiness is in our hands.

For the more than 70 million Baby
Boomers approaching retirement, the road
to their financial goals has become much
cloudier than for previous generations.
With benefits such as Social Security and
employer pensions less certain, it is up to
those approaching, or at, retirement, to
choose the right strategy and information
sources for making responsible decisions.
Boomers are living longer and more
active lives and should consider taking
greater responsibility for the protec-
tion of their retirement savings so they
dont outlive their nest eggs, says Holly
Burgess, VP, Strategy and Marketing
Communications, Liberty Mutual. Its
important to create a safe retirement
savings strategy customized to your
needs.There are several things Boomers
can do to help safeguard their retirement.
Plan and ProtectFocus on protecting your
nest egg via conservative investments.
Start by asking what safety means to
you. Are you seeking to protect your prin-
cipal from stock market volatility or look-
ing for protection from taxation as you
grow your assets?
Is your top priority planning for the
unforeseen, such as funds for future
medical emergencies? According to the
U.S. Department of Labor, almost 20
percent of retiree income will be spent
on health care.Knowing this will help
you decide where to invest the portion of
your nest egg you aim to safeguard.Think
ConservativelyAn easy rule of thumb is
that youll need to replace 70 to 90 percent
of your pre-retirement income, say the
experts at the Certified Financial Planner
(CFP) Board of Standards. Your asset
allocation may change over time, the CFP
Board points out.
As you age you may opt to limit expo-
sure to riskier investments like stocks
by investing more conservatively.Choose
SafelyFor the portion of retirement sav-
ings you want to protect for near-term
use, consider safer options. Many financial
planners are advising older Americans
to consider conservative alternatives like
Certificates of Deposit, Fixed Income
Funds and Fixed Deferred Annuities.
Unlike more volatile investments, Fixed
Deferred Annuities protect your prin-
cipal while providing the opportunity
to generate regular, periodic income.
These products are offered by insurance
companies and pay a fixed, guaranteed
interest rate for an initial period. The rate
may change later but cannot drop below
a guaranteed minimum. Unlike many
investments, interest earned on an annu-
ity is tax deferred. Details about these
types of products can be found on such
websites as www.LibertyMutual.com/
FixedAnnuitySolutions.It is important to
consider an insurers financial strength
and to choose an annuity that allows you
to customize it and access funds when you
need them.
Take ControlDont sacrifice control
over the design and price of the prod-
uct you purchase. Pay for the features
you need for your individual situation,
says Mark McVeigh, SVP, Marketing
and Distribution, Liberty Mutual. Lastly,
understand any risks or sacrifices involved
with each product.

Stay Warm
Cold weather is danger-
ous for older people and
those with heart or respira-
tory problems.
Bundle up when you go
outside. That includes a
hat, gloves, and a scarf, if
necessary.
At home, keep your feet
covered with thick socks.
Prepare tea, soup and
other hot foods and bever-
ages. Seal up drafts in your
home with weather-strip-
ping.
And if your muscles
feel stiff and your breath-
ing is slow, call 911 imme-
diately, as these are signs
of hypothermia.
Dont fret the sun
will come out tomorrow.
But for now, take care to
stay healthy this season.

Hosting a holiday party
can be fun and a great way
to get together with friends
you may not see as often
as you like. However, some
people may shy away from
hosting, afraid the hectic
planning or cost will be too
much.
But you dont have to
break down or go broke to
host a stylish holiday party
this year.
Following a few simple
tips can ensure a party
thats fun for you and your
guests.
Play to Your
Strengths
Consider decorating
with whats readily avail-
able. Got a great collection
of candles? Now is the
time to use them. For an
especially stunning effect
choose only one color,
such as white or cream,
for all linens, serve ware
and dcor. Add a dash of
sparkle and youre all set.
If you need to borrow serv-
ing pieces to round out
a buffet or dinner table,
just ask family or a close
friend.
And dont be afraid to
employ secret elves as a
way to lighten the load.
Many caterers offer a
pick-up or drop-off service
for hors doeuvres. Cook
the dishes you make well
and then supplement them
with food from a caterer.
This way, you can still enjoy
the compliments on your
cooking, but you wont be
spending quality mingling
time in the kitchen.
Simplify
and Save
Most experienced hosts
know the value of minimal-
ism. When deciding on
food or drinks go simple
but with a unique twist. For
example, serve sodas, one
red wine, one white wine
and a signature cocktail
with a unique base, such
as Dumante, the world`s
only pistachio liqueur. A
simple martini takes on
new sophistication with
two parts vodka, one part
Dumante and a lemon peel
garnish.
Or shake equal parts
vanilla vodka, dark creme
de cacao and Dumante in a
cocktail shaker with ice and
pour through a strainer into
a martini glass. Sprinkle
with cinnamon to add a bit
more elegance. For more
ideas, visit www.dumante.
com. Add a lasting impres-
sion when you give recipe
cards of your signature
drink as favors.
Invite a
Special Guest
When gathering people
who may not know each
other, it helps to have a
person or activity as a con-
versation starter. Consider
hiring a local musician or
artist who can entertain
your guests with impromp-
tu songs or sketches.
Or help guests get into
the true spirit of the holi-
days. In lieu of gifts, guests
can bring canned food for a
soup kitchen, wrap toys for
a local shelter or create care
packages to send to troops
overseas. By making it fun
and easy, you will naturally
infuse the spirit of the sea-
son into your event.
With a little creative
thinking, your party can be
the must attend event of
the season.

STATEPOINT MEDIA
With todays busy sched-
ules, most people wish they
simply had more time. But
while you cant add hours
to the day, you can free up
your time by streamlining
your to-do list with time-
saving tools.
From the kitchen to the
office, people are looking
for new technologies to
help them become more
efficient. In fact, according
to a survey conducted by
research firm Toluna, and
cordless phone manufactur-
er VTech Communications,
81 percent of respondents
rank devices that help you
multi-task and get more
things done as very impor-
tant.
So if you are feeling
strapped for time, stay up to
date with these multitask-
ing tips:
Automate Your
Finances
By automating your
finances, your banking can
take place while you sleep.
The first step is to sign
up for direct deposit at
work. Likewise, you can
set up direct debit for
your monthly bills. If you
need to access any of your
statements, you no longer
need to sort through your
file cabinet. Its all easily
searchable through your
online account.
So stop sorting mail, fil-
ing, paying bills and visiting
your brick and mortar bank,
and go take a bubble bath
instead.
E-Read
Sorting through
library stacks, putting a
book on hold, and wait-
ing three weeks for your
pick to become available
is a charming experience.
However, its also unbear-
ably time consuming.
Save yourself the trouble
and download exactly what
books you want to your e-
reader. Some public librar-
ies even have downloadable
books online.
Reclaim Your
Hands
While talking on the
phone, youre probably
also typing, cooking, doing
laundry or some other task.
And you would probably be
completing the other task
more efficiently if you had
both hands free.
Invest in a phone system
for your home or office that
will give you your hands
back. For example, the
LS6475-3 phone system
from VTech enables users
to answer calls from a cord-
less headset and conference
conversations while accom-
plishing other tasks such
as cleaning, finalizing work
presentations or preparing
dinner.
If you conduct business
both from the home and
on-the-go, consider VTechs
Connect-to-Cell phone
system, DS6421-3, which
syncs your cellular calls to a
regular handset phone. This
capability gives you better
sound quality and the secu-
rity of a landline, while still
using your mobile number
for business calls at home.
For more information, visit
www.vtechphones.com.
Order Food
Online
Nothing saves time like
ordering in. And now its
easier than ever.
New food ordering
sites such as Seamless.com
partner with thousands of
restaurants in cities nation-
wide, so that you can order
dinner, even while checking
e-mail.
Make digging through
your menu drawer and
repeating your address
three times a thing of the
past.
Whether youre a busi-
ness professional, full-time
homemaker or both, you
can create more time in
your day by making the best
use of the latest technolo-
gies to help you get more
done.

be taken hostage by his stylish silhouette
his picturesque profile.
His full mustache, his kind eyes, his
trademark uniform yes, youve seen
The Conductor a hundred times before.
Or have you?
Wayne Dault II, a customer service
specialist with Marquette Rail, is the real-
life image of The Conductor character
played by Tom Hanks in the 2004 motion
capture computer-animated movie, The
Polar Express.
Its a Christmas character a seasonal,
spirited silhouette the 34-year-old
Ludington man welcomes. As a real-
life railroad conductor, Dault serves as
Marquette Rails official Santa Express
Coordinator, a duty that has him orga-
nizing the companys annual 130-mile,
14-stop journey from Grand Rapids to
Manistee, every December. And with
Santa Claus again riding shotgun, thats
just what the mild-mannered conductor
did last week he directed his train from
stop-to-stop, much to the delight of the
many crowds that had gathered in each
town along the way.
In early November, 2006, an Idea
was brought to us by an employee that we
should operate a Santa train of some kind
on Marquettes property, Dault said.
The basic principle was for us to
deliver Santa to towns where people might
not otherwise have the opportunity to see
the jolly red-suited man, otherwise. This
concept has changed very little since we
started running the train.
With success, Dault said, comes some
change a little change, for the good.
After a couple years of running we
found that we needed more manpower
and something to haul trees in, he said.
Looking back, we started out with an
engine and caboose that was all and
continued to operate with that until three
years ago.
This year we operated with two
restored and painted cabooses, a boxcar to
haul trees and the locomotive. The trees
were the brainchild of a retired Coast
Guard member who served on the cutter
Mackinaw. He had participated in the
annual event with the Christmas Tree
Ship. Anyway, he told me about (the leg-
end of the Christmas Ship) and the deci-
sion was made to incorporate trees with
the Santa Express.
So, at every stop, the Santa Express
now donates and delivers Christmas trees
to families in need of such holiday cheer.
First Santa Express
rumbles into Stronach
and Manistee in 2006
Dault has served as The Conductor
on the Santa Express since the first trip
in 2006, but since 2009, hes also been
responsible for coordinating the entire
event.
From station stops to train personnel,
to police and fire and train schedule, it all
falls to me, he said I feel so privileged to
be a part this magical experience.
First off, I am the actual conductor on
the train, which means I am the ranking
employee. Im in charge of the train and
all persons involved with the train take
their orders from me.
Im not just playing a character out
of the movies, he said. My other duties
range from security of the train, to talk-
ing with members of the community, to
taking pictures with the kids and adults. I
have people who assist with giving out of
trees, but the names for the trees are coor-
dinated through me as well, so Im also
involved with the distribution if my people
need help.
Im responsible for all the persons on
board the train, at all times, as well as the
public on our property. This year we had
25 people on board for the day as volun-
teers Marquette Rail employees and
their families, and/or significant others.
Dault said that for the six years
the company has operated the Santa
Express, it has maintained a zero incident
record.
Im very proud of this record and to all
those who help me maintain it, he said.
This event that we put on starts weeks
and in some cases months in advance.
Our actual Santa Express is a two-
day event, though the public only sees one
of those days. The train departs our shop
facilities the day before to reach Comstock
Park, where the train is parked until the
next morning when we run the public
train.
Though the Marquette Rails Santa
Express makes 14 stops along its long
run, only half those communities sched-
ule events to coincide with its arrival and
departure.
Seven of these town have their own
events scheduled for the day and center
around whatever theyre doing for the
arrival of their Santa Claus, Dault said.
Marquette has a Santa on board all day,
but we pick up at least seven other (guest)
Santas, who get dropped off at these seven
towns. We then continue on.
Kids and adults come up to me, some
crying, saying they cant believe what
were doing. Of course, given my attire on
the train, Im always thought of as being
straight out of the movies. A lot of adults
and kids have to have their picture taken
with The Conductor from the Polar
Express, even though we cant call the
train that because of copyrights. But this
doesnt keep the kids from asking if Im
from the movie.
The uniform of The Conductor that I
wear for our Santa Express is newer, with
some antiques attached, but I did try to
pattern it after, as best I could, to try and
resemble The Conductor from the Polar
Express. I dont think I did too bad.
Largest turnouts on
14-town journey?
Fountain and Stronach
Though the Marquette Santa Express
travels through towns much larger than
those in Manistee County and the sur-
rounding area, Dault didnt hesitate to
answer when asked what towns usually
have the best turn out.
By far our two largest stops of the
day are Fountain and Stronach, he said.
Without a doubt, these two towns put
their hearts and souls into making the
train stop all that it can be for the short
time we are there.
I estimate that each stop has at least
500 people in attendance. The Santa
Express has become a great experience,
very humbling in my opinion. It makes me
realize Im extremely lucky to do what I do
and have what I have in life.
Originally from Alma, Dault now lives
in neighboring Ludington. His Dad was a
truck driver for the better part of 40 years,
while his Mom was a school teacher for 34
years with the Alma Public Schools. Both
are retired now. He has one sister, Hallie.
The elder Dault joined his son on
last weeks Santa Express trip through
central and western Michigan, and into
Manistee County.
My entire family has always support-
ed me in my dream of becoming a locomo-
tive engineer, Dault said. My girlfriend,
Tasha, is also very supportive and is an
instrumental force in my planning and
execution of the Santa Express.
Dault attended and graduated from
Alma Public Schools. After graduation
he moved to Overland Park, Kansas (a
suburb of Kansas City), where he studied
a two-year railroad conductor train-
ing course, earning him an Associate of
Science from Johnson County Community
College.
Hes currently beginning his 14th year
of service in the railroad industry.
I began my career on the Kansas City
Southern Railway, working out of Kansas
City, where after a year of service I found
a position with CSX Transportation out
of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where, after
a few years, I was able to obtain my engi-
neers license.
Since December of 2005, I have been
employed by Marquette Rail, based out of
Ludington, where Im dual qualified as a
conductor and as an engineer.
Marquette Rails operates a fleet of
eight General Motors Electro Motive
Division locomotives, including three
3,000 horse power model SD 40-2s, five
2,000 horse power model GP 38-2s and
one 1,750 horse power model GP-9.
Every day we operate two road jobs
and two yard jobs, he said. Marquette
Rail operates six-day-a week-service to
Grand Rapids, covering approximately
68,000 miles annually.
We run primarily salt and de-icing
materials from Oxcidental Chemical in
Ludington and paper and industrial mate-
rial out of Manistee. My normal official
position title with Marquette Rail is as an
engineer, though I can work as a conduc-
tor if needed.
Yes, he can.
Much to the delight of those who meet
him along the Santa Express route every
year, yes he can. Wayne Dault II is, The
Christmas Conductor.
