Managing Risks in food

GMP,GHP ISO 9001 HACCP - 1993 SQF, BRC, IFS EuroGAP for the pre-farm gate sector. ISO 22000

FSMS ISO 22000

It can be used by all organizations in the supply chain, from fork to farm. Aids organizations to demonstrate it ability to conform to its own sated food safety policy Plan, implement, operate, maintain and update a food safety management system (FSMS) Implement PRPs and verify the effectiveness of the implemented PRPS and other control measures Provides an auditable standard that can be used for internal audits or third-party certification

Limitations of ISO 22000

It does not lays any specific guidelines to meet the requirements of different stake holders, customers and auditors. It was observed that as a management system standard, ISO 22000 is too generic when it comes to prerequisite programmes

PAS 220:2008
Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 220 is a new complementary standard to ISO 22000. It has been designed to address the technical limitations around PRPs in ISO 22000 for the food manufacturing sector. It aims to bring more clarity to the PRP requirements of ISO 22000 in food manufacturing sector It specifies the requirements of Prerequisite programmes in detail to assist in controlling food safety hazards. Meeting GFSI requirements on PRPs

PAS 220:2008
Developed by BSI and published in Oct 2008 in association with the G4. Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the European Union (CIAA) sponsored the development of the PAS 220.

17

Benefits
Harmonization of prerequisite programmes and industry best practice for food manufacturing. Both large and small manufacturers and retailers now have the opportunity to unite under a commonly agreed set of prerequisite programs for the international control of food safety hazards. Reduced costs from waste reduction, fewer product failures, and better traceability throughout the supply chain Reduce the food safety hazard at all levels in the product and processing environment. Meeting the prerequisite programmes expectations and requirements of food manufacturing stakeholders, including food retailers and food-service providers. It would assists organizations in operating their food manufacturing processes at the very highest quality level in accordance with ISO 22000. Safer food to the consumers in its true spirits.

Recognition by GFSI
27 May 2009 - FSSC 22000: the content of the Food Safety System Certification scheme was approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). FSSC 22000 certification scheme is expected to become the sixth standard to join the stable of GFSI recognized schemes A GFSI-approved FSSC 22000 scheme could bring more food manufacturers into the fold, as well as encouraging other interested parties along the food chain to adopt similar PRPbased approaches Seven of the world's largest supermarket chains already committed to accepting any scheme recognized by the GFS would give a big thrust in widespread acceptance of FSSC
