Air
When considering musical interpretation why should all expression rely on the human mind?
If caught in a blaze does a man not run on instinct?
When drowning does one still struggle to breathe?
I propose that by removing unnecessary expression dictated by an outside force - the composer,
we reveal a more animalistic and harsh text that is closer to the performer's physical needs.
Therefore, this piece relies on the natural need for 'Air'. I insist the players hold their breath and in doing so
become much more in touch with darker side of desperation in performance.
Any dissonance and disruptive harmony is down to the imperfection of the human form.
I hear so many composers focusing on the perfection of the performer and the necessity of technique.
In their own pretentious way they alienate themselves from an audience.
I do not want to connect with a listener through acceptable musical practice.
I want them to feel the urges and pure desire the performers are enabled to express.
I hope it is as uncomfortable to play as much as it is uncomfortable to watch.
I hope someone feels pain.
