SMES 3203 SOLID STATE PHYSICS SESSION 2011/12, SEMESTER 1 TUTORIAL 1 1.

. Explain the difference between crystalline and amorphous solids.

2.

What are Bravais and non Bravais lattices?

3.

Explain what is meant by translational vector?

4.

Define basis vector.

5.

What is a unit cell? Explain the difference between a primitive unit cell and a non primitive unit cell using a simple cubic and face centred cubic structures as examples.

6.

Sketch three (422) planes in a cubic system. Also indicate the [422] direction and distance between planes.

7.

Sketch 3 parallel planes and the direction in a cubic lattice for the following Miller indices: (200), (212) and ( 1 12) . Also indicate the distance between planes.

8.

Sketch another 2 planes having a different Miller indices but parallel to the plane (422).

9.

Sketch the sodium chloride structure. What are the basis atoms, coordination number and also the Bravais lattice for sodium chloride? Also state the positions of atoms in a unit cube.

10.

State the number of lattice points in a simple hexagon and a closed-packed hexagon structures.

11.

State for the closed-packed hexagonal structure: number of basis atoms, coordinate of basis atoms and the coordination number.

12.

The diamond structure has 8 atoms in a unit cell. What are the coordinates of the atoms and indicate in a diagram.

13.

Obtain the atomic packing ratio for the body centred cubic structure, face centred cubic structure and the simple hexagonal structure.

14.

State and sketch the primitive translational vectors for the body centred cubic and the face centred cubic structures. Also determine the volume of the primitive cell respectively.

15.

State and sketch the primitive translational vectors for a simple cubic structure. Also determine the volume of the primitive cell.

16.

Calculate the packing density for a hexagonal closed packed lattice.

17.

A crystal structure has mutually perpendicular crystal axes x, y and z and a, b and c are the lattice constants in each direction. A plane intersects the crystal axes x and y at the points a and -3b respectively and is parallel to the z axis. What are the Miller indices of the plane?

18.

For a simple cubic lattice with cube edge a, find the separation of lattice points along lines in the following directions: [110], [111], [320] and [321].

19.

Sodium has atomic weight 23.0 and crystallizes with a bcc structure. At room temperature its density is 1.01 103 kg / m3 . Calculate (a) the length of the conventional unit cell edge (b) the nearest neighbour distance

20.

Determine the Miller indices of a plane which makes intercepts of 6a, 4b and 2c on the x, y and z axes and give the intercepts of other planes having these indices including the two nearest the origin. Sodium transforms from bcc to hcp about 23K (the martensitic transformation). Assuming that the density remains fixed through this transition, find the lattice constant a of the hexagonal phase, given that

21.

a 4.23A o in the cubic phase and that the c/a ratio is

indistinguishable from the ideal value.

22.

The density of fcc gold is 19300 kgm and its atomic weight is 197.Calculate the separation between the closed-packed planes. On the assumption that the atoms may be thought of as spheres which just touch one another, estimate the atomic radius.
