South West Childrens Palliative Care Conference November 2011

Over 60 delegates came along to the South West Childrens Palliative Care Conference held in November at the beautiful Yeo Valley Lakewood Centre in Blagdon, The participants were from a wide range of services from across the South West region, including community nursing, Local Authorities, hospices, acute trusts, childrens commissioners, paediatricians, voluntary sector organisations , NHS South West, specialist commissioning and parent carers This participative day was jointly organised by the South West Development Centre and the Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucester Childrens Palliative Care Network. It was chaired by Barbara Gelb, Chief Executive of Together for Short Lives. Sir Alan Craft joined us for the day and gave a keynote speech on the national palliative care funding review and next steps. The key aims of the day were:

To showcase projects from the Southwest funded through the Department of Health special funding programme and

To identify lessons and priorities for further development in order to improve services for children with life-limiting/life-threatening conditions and their families

There were a variety of presentations, workshops and marketplace showcases displaying and sharing the range of projects in the South West covering themes such as:

measuring quality of life, improving access to services, feedback from parents, transition to adulthood, end of life care, staff development, and support and improving coordination of services and information.

The day was most inspiring and informative and captured a great deal of energy and commitment to this important area of childrens services and support. The presentations and notes from the day can be found on the SWDC website at http://www.swdc.org.uk/children/children/disabled-children/palliative-care/health-visitor-call-toaction-programme/south-west-childrens-palliative-care-conference--24-november-2011/

Hungry Manikin & Baby Niki Dolls Distribution

Distribution of Hungry Manikins and baby Nicki dolls throughout the South West!
The South West Development Centre, on behalf of the regional South West Childrens Palliative Care Network, successfully bid for funding to acquire several Hungry Manikins and baby Nicki dolls to help with tube insertion training and skill development. Each PCT area in the region received at least one of these training aids.
Baby Nicki doll training aid Hungry Manikin training aid

Examples of how they have been used and positive outcomes met:-

We have used the trachy tube to teach some new nursing carers the mechanics of what it looks like and how to re-pass and tie in place. This would be impossible to demonstrate on a moving toddler

The play specialists have used them in preparing children for insertion of gastrostomies and talking with them about any concerns afterwards.

CCN used it to train in an early years setting which had a child who had started with a nasogastric tube. It was very helpful to be able to show them the risks associated with incorrect placement of the tube and it definitely improved their awareness of the need to ensure tube placement each time the child is fed. This will have helped to keep this child included and safe and until it was done the parent had to stay at the setting with the child.

The manikins have also been helpful in demonstrating to siblings what happens.

We used the manikin with a family who had limited understanding of English and by using the manikin we were able to show them visually how to re-pass the tube. Also the family lived a distance away from the hospital and they had no transport so that would have been difficult for them to get to the hospital. The parents were able to practise the procedure many times which they could not have done on their child. It gave them confidence to re-pass the tube if it came out and we were happy that the procedure would be as safe as we could have made it.

The Hungry Manikin, has been a very useful training aid which I use when training Enteral feeding management at schools. It is always helpful to have a visual tool to help with the learning and understanding of basic anatomy especially to those who have no medical training or background.

Thank you again in helping us raise the standards.
