L1-1
Objectives
In this lab you will connect to the 2950 switch in the remote lab and put a basic configuration on the switch using the initial configuration dialog. The switch starts this lab powered off, with its startup configuration file erased. Therefore when the switch boots up it is unable to find a configuration in NVRAM; it starts up the initial configuration dialog which allows basic configuration tasks to be performed in an interactive, question-based mode. The objectives for this lab are: Connect to the 2950 switch in the remote lab. Use the initial configuration dialog to put a basic configuration on the switch. Add a default gateway to the switchs configuration, using Cisco IOS commands.
Important Substitute your pod number for x in all instructions and commands.
Important To have the equipment revert to a pre-set configuration that will have all equipment ready for the lab, use the Reset-to feature under your pod link. Choose a lab from the drop down menu and click on the Reset button; the equipment will reset and pre-configure itself for that lab and when the reset is complete you will also see the document associated with the new lab. Choosing the Change Doc feature will load the new lab instructions but will not reset or configure the equipment.

Procedure
Pod definition
1. The equipment in the lab is grouped by pods; a network has six pods. Each team of up to two people will configure a pod. The team membership should be defined prior to starting this lab. Each pod contains a virtual Access-PC, two routers and a switch. The devices are named Access-PC-x, PxR1, PxR2 and PxSW, where x is the pod number. Within a pod, each router has a serial connection to the other router and to the core router. Each switch is connected to both routers and to the core switch over FastEthernet connections.
Important Notice in the title of this Tarantella Window it says DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW. It is important that you DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW or else you will no longer be connected to the lab system

If Internet Explorer has blocked content in this Tarantella Window, click the warning message and then select Display Blocked Content. 4. In the left-side navigation frame of your Internet Explorer screen you will see your pod menu (indicating your pod number) and links to your pod devices; if you dont see them, click on the Refresh button in your browser.
5. Click on the PxSW link (where x is your pod number; for example, if you are in Pod 3 this link will be P3SW). The link will expand and you will see a set of links below it.

6. To connect to your PxSW console click on the Xterm Telnet link. If a security warning appears, click Run.
7. Another security warning may appear, warning of an unrecognized security certificate. Click Accept.
8. The terminal window that appears will ask for a password. Enter your e-lab password and press <Enter>.
Important This is the password that used to login to www.remotelabs.com. You will need to use this password to log into the terminal server every time you start up a connection to one of the devices in your pod.

11. Enter setup mode by typing y or yes and pressing <Enter>. Throughout the configuration dialog shown here, your responses are shown in bold.
% Please answer 'yes' or 'no'. Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:yes
Note
If you make a mistake during the initial configuration dialog and want to restart, press <Control-C> to exit and then go to privileged mode and enter the setup command.
Switch>enable Switch#setup --- System Configuration Dialog --Continue with configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
Enter setup mode by typing y or yes and pressing <Enter>.
12. Notice that the default answer/setting to queries is in square brackets; press <Enter> to accept the default, or type another response after the colon and then press <Enter>. Decline entering basic management setup by entering n or no. You may opt to review interfaces by answering yes to the interface summary question.
At any point you may enter a question mark '?' for help. Use ctrl-c to abort configuration dialog at any prompt. Default settings are in square brackets '[]'. Basic management setup configures only enough connectivity for management of the system, extended setup will ask you to configure each interface on the system Would you like to enter basic management setup? Note
The number of FastEthernet interfaces on your switch may be different from the example shown.
13. Enter PxSW (where x is your pod number) as the host name for your switch. For example, Pod 2 switchs name is P2SW.
Configuring global parameters: Enter host name [Switch]:PxSW
Important Remember to type your pod number instead of x!
14. Next, you will be asked to enter passwords for the switch; use the passwords in the following table: Switch passwords
Password Description
enable secret enable password virtual terminal password
Password
san-fran notused switch
Usage
Privileged access (encrypted) Privileged access (not encrypted; the use of this password is deprecated) Telnet
Note
The enable secret password is used to control access to privileged mode. It is saved in the configuration in a hashed (encrypted) form, unlike the enable password. If both passwords are specified, the enable secret overrides the enable password (thus the clever enable password in the above table); note that in the initial configuration dialog you must enter both of these passwords. The virtual terminal password controls telnet access.
The enable secret is a password used to protect access to privileged EXEC and configuration modes. This password, after entered, becomes encrypted in the configuration. Enter enable secret: san-fran The enable password is used when you do not specify an enable secret password, with some older software versions, and some boot images. Enter enable password: notused CCNA Lab Guide Global Knowledge Training LLC L1-11
15. SNMP is not covered in this course; answer no to the configure SNMP question.
Configure SNMP Network Management? [no]:no
16. Next you will configure an IP address on the switch under the interface VLAN 1; answer yes to configuring VLAN1 and using IP. Use the IP address 192.168.xx.10 (where x is your pod number); for example, for Pod 2 the address is 192.168.22.10. Use the default subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
Do you want to configure Vlan1 interface? [no]: yes Configure IP on this interface? [no]: yes IP address for this interface: 192.168.xx.10 Subnet mask for this interface [255.255.255.0] : Class C network is 192.168.xx.0, 24 subnet bits; mask is /24
Important Remember to type you pod number for each x!
19. Finally, the initial configuration dialog (setup) is complete. The switch will propose a configuration based on your input. The switch may display several pages of output. Pressing <Enter> will display one line at a time; pressing the <space bar> will move forward a page at a time.
The following configuration command script was created: hostname PxSW enable secret 5 $1$J4rX$BfjThJJPez5pNSXkOPdLG. enable password notused line vty 0 15 password switch no snmp-server ! L1-12 CCNA Lab Guide Global Knowledge Training LLC
20. If you are satisfied with your configuration, select 2 at the prompt to save the configuration to NVRAM and exit the initial configuration dialog.
[0] Go to the IOS command prompt without saving this config. [1] Return back to the setup without saving this config. [2] Save this configuration to nvram and exit. Enter your selection [2]: 2 Building configuration... [OK] 04:43:04: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Vlan1, changed state to up Use the enabled mode 'configure' command to modify this configuration. PxSW>
Important Remember that you can abbreviate commands; for example configure terminal is often shortened to config t.
22. Disable interfaces FastEthernet 0/11 and FastEthernet 0/12, to prevent interference from the core switch. (PxSW is connected to the core via FastEthernet 0/11 and FastEthernet 0/12; however, these interfaces are not used in the ICND1 labs.)
PxSW(config)#interface range fa0/11 12 PxSW(config-if-range)#shutdown PxSW(config-if-range)#exit
Note The interface range command is a quick way to put the same configuration on multiple interfaces.
L1-14
23. Use the ip default-gateway command to allow the switch to forward packets to another network. Use the address of PxR1s FastEthernet 0/0 interface as the default gateway: 192.168.xx.1. Note that this gateway will not work until PxR1 is configured.
PxSW(config)#ip default-gateway 192.168.xx.1 PxSW(config)#end
STOP! You have completed this lab, you may choose to explore the information that you entered in more detail before moving on to another lab. Good job!
