Lets look back to the origins of mankind: (This description is not complete, but sufficient in this context) There

are stories of the first man and woman from whom all mankind has evolved. Adam and Eve, remember? Well, there are many different such mythologies. According to the hindu mythology, the first man and woman(progenitors of mankind) were the Manu, Vaivasvatha and his wife Shraddha.

In various Hindu traditions, Manu is a title accorded to the progenitor of mankind, and also the very first brahman king to rule this earth, who saved mankind from the universal flood. He was absolutely honest which was why he was initially known as "Satyavrata" (One with the oath of truth). His wife is Shraddha.

Mahabharata says: And Manu was imbued with great wisdom and devoted to virtue. And he became the progenitor of a line. And in Manu's race have been born all human beings, who have, therefore, been called Manavas(maanav, remember?). And it is of Manu that all men including Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, and others have been descended, and are, therefore, all called Manavas. Subsequently, O monarch, the Brahmanas became united with the Kshatriyas. And those sons of Manu that were Brahmanas devoted themselves to the study of the Vedas. "The ten sons of Manu are known as Vena, Dhrishnu, Narishyan, Nabhaga, Ikshvaku, Karusha, Saryati, the eighth, a daughter named Ila, Prishadhru the ninth, and Nabhagarishta, the tenth. They all betook themselves to the practices of Kshatriyas. Besides these, Manu had fifty other sons on Earth. But we heard that they all perished, quarrelling with one another.

Among the sons of Ikshvaku, was Nimi.

Nimi was cursed by great sage Vashishta-> "to lose his body"(long story there). King Nimi's soul left his body. The kingdom was named Videha(deha means body, videha means one without a body). Sages practiced magical enchantments on Nimi's dead body. From Nimi's body, Mithi was born. On his name, the capital of Videha kingdom was named Mithila.

Because Mithi was born from the body of Nimi, he was given the title JANAKA, thereafter, all descendents were called JANAKAS apart from their original names. JANAKA became a name for every Videha king, a common name.

Mahorama Swarnorama Hrisvaroma Seeradhwaja - Father of Sita.

Down in the line of JANAKAS was born Seeradhwaj, the most famous JANAKA. Strange! his actual name is less known(Seeradhwaj) than the common name. So, From henceforth, by JANAKA we mean king SEERADHWAJA.

This king Janaka, the great raja yogi, the celebrated king of Videha Kingdom, the father of Sita, has been revered by the literary epics Ramayana, Mahabharata, puranas and other sacred ancient texts, and even in modern religion, Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

An excerpt from Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Bhagat vadaa raja janak hai| Gurmukh maya vich udaasi|| (King Janaka is a great Bhakt(worshipper), could remain detached in the claws of maya)

A substantiatory Story:

Directed by his father, Shuka deva muni, son of Ved Vyaas, came to gain enlightenment from king Janaka. But he was always stung by a question,"how can a king living in worldly pleasures be an ascetic?" Janaka said that he'd only accept him if he could pass his test. he was given an oil filled lamp up to rim, and the king said, "Go and travel in the city, but remember, dont spill even a drop of oil if you seek enlightenment from me". Men were sent with him. Distractions such as beautiful dancers were arranged in city to distract the muni. The muni came successful. not even a single drop of oil fell on the way! Janaka asked, "what did you see in the city?". The muni calmly replied, "i was so absorbed in concentration on the lamp so as not to allow any drop to fall that i did not see anything". Janaka said, "you had all the beauty in the city to see, but you did not, not at all allowing you concentration to divert, thats my secret, i dont let my concentration divert from the lord, no matter how wonderful is the play of the maya, this way, i live and travel in the world, but detached, unaffected, and concentrated like you were in your journey"

Janaka was a deeply knowledge drenched and enlightened soul, master of vedas, shastras and other holy scriptures. A raja-yogi(king from the outside, ascetic at heart), Janaka was called videha more in the sense that he was detached from his body and absorbed in the deep devotion of the lord. Sita, his daughter was called vaidehi...

he is believed to have reached the supreme truth... divinity Incarnated!
