BLOOD CENTERS OF THE PACIFIC JOB ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION: GENERAL FUNCTION: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN Reference Laboratory, San Francisco

Under direction and in accordance with Federal, State, AABB and BCP policies, procedures, regulations, quality control standards, cGMPs, and SOPPs, performs a variety of tasks in a laboratory setting including the arrangement of platelet count tubes in numerical order by date-of-draw, source and blood group using the computer, checking for HPA-LA typing and CMV status, reagent preparation, monitoring equipment, record keeping and other duties as assigned. Manager, Reference Laboratory One part-time temporary status position; 20 hours; Monday Friday; anticipated assignment end date: 12/19/11 Education: Sufficient to perform all tasks and read and follow Standard Operating Policies & Procedures (SOPPs) and regulatory materials. One year relevant experience.

Experience: ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include any or all of the following depending on assignment; other duties may be assigned: reads and follows all procedural and regulatory requirements; assures quality customer service to all customers; arranges the platelet count tubes in numerical order by date-of-draw, source and blood group using the computer; checks for HPA-la typing and CMV status; sorts the phenotyped units (Reflab Box); freezes rare units as needed, including finding and freezing serum on each unit for future viral testing; monitors fibrin adhesive orders and prepares them for distribution as needed; locates untested specimens for the volunteer to phenotype (computer search for untested donors by ethnic origin); data entry of antigen screening results from the volunteer; data entry of antigen testing and hemoglobin-S results from the processing laboratory; rotates panels; distributes antigen profiles; finds units for typing to replace used or older blood in the SBC rare blood inventory; makes reagents; freezes reagent cells (SCARF and local cells); screens donors for common and/or rare antigens; prepares glutaraldehyde-treated donor cells for allogeneic adsorptions; prepares eluates from rare sera to use as typing serum; answers the telephone; transports specimens and/or units to BPS; washes laboratory glassware and housekeeping; performs the count of rare units/donors to complete the AABB Reference Lab Tally form; assists with distribution of SCARF. Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and techniques; ability to understand and follow and successfully perform all duties assigned in accordance with regulations and procedures; ability to maintain clear and accurate records; understanding of antigen profiles and panels; ability to operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, computers, etc.; ability to interface effectively and harmoniously with employees and public; ability to read and follow Standard Operating Policies and Procedures and regulations.
