Think about how you would like to organise the room for your presentation. You may like to discuss this with the Roll Call teacher prior to beginning the workshop. Some options: - Normal classroom arrangement, semi-circle of tables and chairs, circle of tables and chairs, groups of tables and chairs If you do rearrange the room, remember to arrange the room back to how it was before you leave. Do you need the computer and data projector? Check your lesson plan and make sure they are switched on and ready to go at the before you start the workshop?

Today we are going to explore an issue that relates to being a good digital citizen which means participating safely with digital technology including things like computers, mobile phones and the internet. Being a good digital citizen is important whether you are at home, work or school. We are focusing on the issue of Understanding Digital Reputations

Explanation:
It is important that you understand the concept of digital reputation and the impact digital reputations can have on real life reputations. We are going to look at practical ways for you to manage reputations and the importance of public versus private and how to balance the desire for a public presence with the need to protect personal information.

Make sure the computer, data projector and speakers are switched on. Ask staff to login to Internet.

Activity 1: Online Video

We are going to begin with an exploration of digital reputations and how the information that students post online can have real life implications. A brief introductory video from a US organisation, NS Teens sets the scene for us to start thinking about what your social networking profiles and other online communications say about you in the online world and how that can impact on you in the real world. The video Profile Penalty talks about the importance of considering what information is posted on social networking profiles and how that information impacts on digital and real life reputations. In this video Tad tries to make sure his online profile wont embarrass him in front of coaches, colleagues and a girl he likes. (Show video) Have this website ready to go. Activity 2: Video Discussion

As a class consider the following: 1) What does Tads profile say about him? 2) How can you decide whether information and images are appropriate and safe to post online? 3) Why might some people post inappropriate messages and pictures online? 4) Who can see things you post online? 5) Can you guarantee complete privacy when you post things online? Why not?

Explanation:
Think about the concept of private versus public sites and chats. Many young people want to promote certain aspects of their lives, such as involvement in music or acting, but need to understand the importance of separating their brand presence from their personal presence.

Have a think about how celebrities manage their brand, keeping information they want in the public while hiding their personal information to maintain privacy, protect their money and keep safe. By using social networking sites and email addresses distinguished as private and public you can still enjoy sharing the information and brand or persona they want to share with the broader public, while keeping their personal information private for security and safety. Students to discuss these questions in small groups:

6) How might things you post online now affect you in the future? (in terms of a future employment, etc.) 7) What does your profile say about you? 8) How can you encourage your friends to be thoughtful about the profile information they provide for others to read or view?

Write/type these up on the board for the class to discuss
