Frame Design

The box frame methodology used in the design of the base

frame and gantry is constructed using all steel components that
are cut, formed and welded by skilled craftsman in an industry-
accepted vibratory process to insure consistency and reliability.
All mating and reference surfaces are precision-machined by
machinery designed to hold very high tolerances in order to
guarantee that each system is capable of handling the quoted
accuracy

Table Design

The standard system is available in 60- or 80-inch (1.5 or

2.0m) widths and in lengths up to 240 inches (6.1m). The table
is available in either the slat style or the metal cutting option.

• Slat Style - The standard table top is a slat style cut bed
with slats that are 1” (25.4mm) tall, 4pt steel rule on 4”
(101.6mm) centers. Each slat has a radius on the edge to
minimize flashback. The slat material provides a rigid
base to hold such sacrifice materials as acrylic egg crate
material.

• Metal Cutting Option - Optional metal cutting process

slats are available with the capacitive cutting head option.
This table design is set up to reduce flashback, facilitate
the acrylic egg crate material, and provide a minimal point
source of contact for metal cutting. The CNC files are made
available upon request to allow the customer to fabricate
replacement slats as needed.

Helical Rack and Pinion

The high speed helical rack and pinion system used on the
2000 Series Laser system offers many advantages.

• Quieter Run - Helical rack and pinions run much quieter

than straight rack and pinions, especially at high speeds.
Due to the angular cut in the helical rack and pinion setup,
there are thrust loads on the gear shaft. This action requires
thrust bearings to absorb the load and maintain gear
alignment. The Alpha gearboxes that MultiCam already
uses are designed to handle this load, and the new design
of the 2000 Series Laser systems allows for exceptional
perpendicularity and gear alignment.
• Faster Acceleration and Accuracy – A greater number
of engaged teeth allows the helical rack to easily achieve
faster acceleration and accuracy than the straight rack.
Distributing the load over several teeth also reduces wear
and increases the life of the rack and pinion system.
• High-Speed Rapid Traverse Moves – Helical rack and
pinions allow for high-speed rapid traverse moves which
customers can see and appreciate.

Linear Bearings/Rails

The X- and Y-axes use the 25mm linear ball bearing profile
rails with stainless steel strip covers, while the Z-axis uses
15mm linear ball bearing profile rails. Features include:

• High rigidity and load capacities in all load directions

• Lowest possible noise level and best running characteristics
• High torque load capacity
• 30,400 Nm or 22,421 lb-ft dynamic capacity per pack

Optics

Ease of use and reliability are the baseline used with all optical
components in the beam path.

• Contained beam path - The complete beam path is fully

contained to guarantee safety for the operator as well as
those around the system during operation.
• Air purge - All beam path components are purged with a
positive air pressure to ensure many hours of operation
without contamination.
• Beam benders – All beam benders allow easy replacement
of the directing mirror without the need to re-align the
optical beam path if they get contaminated.
• Laser diode pointer – The mechanical shutter component
also contains the laser diode pointer (red in color) to assist
in laser alignment and is very useful in setting up the
material to be processed.
• Collimator/Beam expander - A collimator/beam expander
is utilized to provide a consistent beam diameter across the
full travel to guarantee a consistent cut width.

Cutting Head

The MultiCam 2000 Series Laser can be configured with either

a capacitive or non-capacitive cutting head. Each cutting head
option is described below.

• Capacitive - The capacitive cutting head option contains

both 2.5” (63.5mm) and 5.0” (127mm) focus lenses. When
combined with at least a 300 watt laser, the capacitive
cutting head allows virtually any material to be processed,
including metal. The capacitive cutting head option is an
industry standard when cutting metals such as carbon steel
and stainless steel. It allows the laser system to maintain
focal point placement in reference to the material surface
while cutting. Even non-conductive materials can be
surface tracked with the addition of the optional tactile foot
adapter.
• Non-capacitive - The non-capacitive cutting head option
offers a 2.5” (63.5mm) focus lens, 5.0” (127mm) focus
lens, or both to provide more flexibility in material
processing.

completing a cutting sequence. By utilizing high-end 3D sign
and graphics applications as well as state-of-the-art CAD/CAM
software for enhanced toolpath generation, the MultiVision
system easily integrates into an existing workflow.

Fume Extraction

The MultiCam 2000 Series Laser can be equipped with either

the OM3510 or OM6000 MicroAir fume extraction system
based on the customer’s requirements and material usage.
Since different materials will produce specific fumes and
particulates, customers should consult the OSHA or local
guidelines and the MSDS sheet to determine which fume
extraction system would provide the recommended protection.
Both fume extraction systems provide fume extraction above
and below the material.

• Above the Material – The fumes produced above the

material during the processing and cutting sequence are
collected using a 2” (50.8mm) diameter flex tube connected
to a 1HP regenerative blower, which then exhausts the
fumes into the main collection tube.
• Below the Material – All fumes produced below the
material are collected through ports in strategic locations
below the table slats and then directed into the 16”
(0.4m) diameter tube at the rear of the system. The tube is
connected to an exhaust system, which pushes the fumes
through 3 filters.
• Providing up to 4500 cfm

Safety Controls

MultiCam uses safety controls on all systems, but the safety controls incorporated with the 2000 Series Laser
show that MultiCam’s commitment to safety is exemplary in the industry.

• The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), part of the FDA, requires that all manufacturers
of laser systems in the US follow the product regulation 21 CFR 1040.10. (Laser manufacturers in Europe
may self-certify to various product standards.) MultiCam is in compliance with this regulation and has been
issued an accession number.
• All power controls are easily accessible to the operator at the front of the system and are keyed per the
CDRH regulations.
• Each system contains a mechanical shutter to ensure that the laser beam can be shut off when the need
arises.
• The light stack located on the top of the control cabinet contains three colored lights to indicate the status of
the machine at a glance: green = no laser output, red = laser output, yellow = maintenance mode. The light
stack is located in clear view of all personnel during operation.
• All doors that could expose the operator or other personnel to any kind of laser radiation are interlocked. If
the interlocked door is opened, then the system will stop motion, close the mechanical shutter and indicate
on the keypad that further instruction is needed from the operator.
• The Emergency Stop (E-stop) can quickly disable the laser power source and motion from the keypad as
well as other optional locations per customer request. Operators can reset the system back to the stopping
point using the handheld controller.

In addition to the standard safety controls used on MultiCam’s 2000 Series Laser, there is optional equipment
available for increased safety.

• Safety mats – The area around the laser system can be fitted with safety mats to provide a safe area for
operators to enter when needing to stop motion and close the mechanical shutter. The safety mats act like an
additional E-stop by requiring the operator to reset the system back to the stopping point using the handheld
controller.
• Light curtain – The area around the laser system can be fitted with a one-, two- or three-sided light curtain
to provide a barrier that will stop motion and close the mechanical shutter. The light curtain acts like an
additional E-stop by requiring the operator to reset the system back to the stopping point using the handheld
controller.
• Laser safety eye wear – Operators and other personnel are encouraged to wear laser safety eye wear that
will provide additional protection for the eyes during laser operation.

Materials

MultiCam’s 2000 Series Laser can be used for many

applications on many different types of materials, both natural
and man-made. As with all laser applications, operators should
consult the MSDS sheet for any material to be processed and
pay close attention to the information regarding smoke or
fumes produced when the material is heated and burned. The
following materials are the most common for laser cutting.

• Acrylics – All cast and extruded acrylics can be processed

with amazing results. The cut edge is left with a fire-
polished finish, reducing the need for a post-process after
machining.
• Woods and wood products – The laser cutting on wood
and wood products leaves a charred cut edge but a very
small kerf width, which can provide operators a limitless
supply of possibilities.
• Metals – The maximum power laser offered by MultiCam
can cut carbon steel up to 5/16” (7.9mm) and stainless steel
up to 5/32” (4.0mm). Unlike the high kilowatt systems, the
sealed tube design of the CO2 laser maintains a very low
daily cost of operation.
• Marble/Granite – The 2000 Series Laser cannot cut
through but can imprint amazing quality images on the
surfaces of marble and granite.
• Polycarbonate – Thinner polycarbonate materials (e.g.,
Lexan) at 0.04” (1.0mm) can be laser cut with a dark brown
to black cut edge.

Laser Processes

The laser is used for cutting, engraving and rastering material. Each process is described below.

• Cutting – Laser cutting is typically used in the production line and for industrial manufacturing applications
such as cutting flat-sheet, structural and piping materials. Laser cutting works by using a computer to direct
the output of a high power laser at the material to be cut. The material then melts, burns, vaporizes away or
is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a high quality surface finish.

• Engraving – Laser engraving is a very technical and complex technique whereby a computer drives the
movements of the laser head to engrave or mark an object at a high rate. (Other systems use tool bits to
contact the engraving surface, and those bits wear down and need to be replaced regularly.) Materials like
polymer and novel metal alloys are specially designed for laser engraving, but marking can be a preferable
alternative when the customer does not want to physically alter the surface of the material. Laser engraving
machines can mark materials using such techniques as printing, hot-branding and laser bonding, which
would normally have been done by other processes.

• Rastering – Laser rastering imprints an image on the material surface with the depth primarily controlled
by the motion speed and the laser power. This image can be in picture file formats such as BMP, JPG, TIFF
or GIF. The rastered image can be very eye-catching, especially in 3D, when processed in materials such as
acrylic, wood, marble or other coated materials. Even materials that are commonly unable to be processed
by cutting or engraving can be plated or coated with a special cover to help with the rastering process.
