1. Calculate your ecological footprint, print a copy of your report and submit it with your SGQs. Discuss three ways in which you could decrease your ecological footprint, and for each, identify the mental or physical barriers that make decreasing your ecological footprint difficult. 2. Explain what the sustainable use of resources means. Provide three examples of resources which are not currently being used in a sustainable manner, and for each, explain why it is difficult to attain sustainability. 3. It has been suggested that gasoline would cost over $10 per gallon if its price reflected the full costs to society of gasoline. Discuss the actions and activities that contribute to those costs. 4. Other than those discussed in class, describe a Tragedy of the Commons. In the description, identify the commons and the events that have lead to the tragedy as well as possible solutions to the tragedy. 5. Look up the population data for one less developed country, and one more developed country. Compare and contrast the population data for the two countries. Discuss, in general, how population dynamics in less developed and more developed nations differ.
6. Distinguish between age-structure diagrams representing the populations of several different countries. Explain how the shape of each agestructure diagram indicates distinguishing characteristics of the population. 7. Draw and label a graph that represents an idealized version of a demographic transition. Discuss the changes that occur in a country during each stage of a demographic transition. 8. Define infant mortality rate and explain why it is often a reliable indicator of the quality of life of a nation. 9. With economic development comes urbanization. Discuss the implication that this trend has on the environment. Explain the role of economics in determining public policies. Use examples to illustrate your explanation. 10. Describe some of the benefits to a countrys population that may result from the empowerment and education of women in less developed nations.
