Lesson Planning Waynesburg University Globster Food Web

Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson: (Provide Standard number and statement) BIO.B.4.2.1: Describe how energy flows through an ecosystem (e.g., food chains, food webs, energy pyramids). BIO.B.4.2.2: Describe biotic interactions in an ecosystem (e.g., competition, predation, symbiosis). Lesson Objective(s) (Stated in observable and measurable terms) The students will be able to: 1. create a food web 2. identify trophic levels 3. identify consumers, producers and decomposers 4. explain carnivore, herbivore, omnivore Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?) Students will be informally assessed as they are researching and creating their food webs. Their food webs will be graded to make sure all required elements are present according to a given rubric. Materials: 1. computer access 2. Instruction sheet for project

Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: Students with special needs may create a simpler food web. If needed students with disabilities may create a simple food chain for their animal. . Enrichment Techniques: Students may incorporate YouTube videos of the animals in their food webs. They may also add more animals to their food webs. Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson):

Lesson Presentation Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: I will review a food web with the students. Then I will show the students an example Globster food web.

Detailed Teaching Sequence: (Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred) a. I will go over the directions for the project with the students 1. Choose a top predator. 2. Research what your predator eats. You may also need to research what the animals that are eaten by your predator eats and the ecosystem in which your predator lives. 3. You must include in your food web a. your top predator b. at least 2 secondary consumers c. at least 3 primary consumers d. at least 4 producers e. at least 2 decomposers f. sun

4. You will create a globster of your food web. You will have to include pictures of all the
organisms.

you need to find pictures of your organisms as your research.

5. On the work sheet list your producers. Why are they called producers? What trophic
level are producers? Why are consumers so important to the food web?

6. On the work sheet list your primary consumers. Why are they primary consumers? What
is another name for them? What trophic level are primary consumers?

7. On the worksheet list your secondary consumers. Why are they secondary consumers?
What might these animals be called if they only eat meat? It they eat plants and animals? What trophic level are secondary consumers? 8. 9. What is your top predator? What kind of consumer is it considered? What trophic level are they? What are your decomposers? What trophic level are they?

10. What ecosystem is your food web part of?

b. Go to computer lab so they can research their predator

1. Fill out sheet with all the needed information 2. Save pictures of each animal

c. On a blank sheet of paper students will sketch their food web so they are ready to create the
Globster d. I will show the students a Globster 1. Give students written directions on how to access globster 2. Go over how to access globster on the white board before we go to the computer lab

a. Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities a. Students will go to the computer lab with their sketches and create their globster with the required elements previous researched

Closure: In groups of 4-5 students will share their globsters with each other.
