Seamless and Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Tubing for General Service This specification covers nominal wall thickness austenitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion resisting and low or high temperature service.

Dimensions and Tolerances

Dimensions. Tube sizes and wall thickness usually furnished to this specification are: - 1/4 in (6.4 mm) ID and larger. - 0.020 in (0.51 mm) nominal wall thickness and heavier. Cut Length. No tube may be shorter than specified. For tube <11/2 in (38.1 mm) cut length may be up to 1/8 in (3 mm) longer than specified. For tube >11/2 in (38.1 mm) cut range may be up to 3/16 in (4.8 mm) longer than specified. These tolerances are increased by 1/8 in (3 mm) for every 10 ft (3 m) over 24 ft (7.3 m), up to a maximum tolerance of 1/2 in (13 mm).

Notes 1 Thin walled tubes. Therefore ovality tolerance increases, but mean OD at a cross section must be within permissible variation. 2 Ovality = Difference between maximum and minimum OD 3 Or tubing with ID < 60% of OD

Manufacture
Materials. Refer to chemical composition table. Manufacture. Seamless or welded, hot or cold finished. Heat Treatment. Refer to heat treatment table and supplementary requirements S1 and S3. Marking. ASTM tube general requirements, page 3-5, apply, plus indication whether the tube is seamless or welded. Also: HT temp = final heat treatment temperature if under 1900 F (1040 C), NDE = Nondestructive electric test performed.

Ordering Information
Item Specification number Size Quantity Name of material Grade Test report Options and supplementary requirements A 269 - 96 Outside diameter and nominal wall Random or specified lengths. Total length or number of lengths. Seamless or welded austenitic stainless steel tubes Selected from chemical composition table DIN 50049.3.1.B Standard, or DIN 50049.3.1.C optional (3rd party witness test) at extra cost Refer to optional and supplementary requirements S1 to S4 thickness Notes

Note - The above table is based on ASTM requirements except with regard to test reports, where standard practice options are added. See also page 10-2 for ISO based ordering and general delivery information.

Finish and Repair

Finish. Tubes to be pickled, free of scale. Where bright annealed, pickling is not necessary. Repair. ASTM tube general requirements, page 3-6, apply

Mandatory Testing
Product Analysis. One billet or one length of flat rolled stock or one tube made from each heat to conform to chemical composition table. Flaring Test for seamless tubes or Flange Test for welded Tubes. One specimen to be tested from one end of one tube from each heat treated lot. Hardness Test. One specimen to be tested from two tubes from each heat treated lot. See the hardness requirements table and Exceptions (bullet) following. Reverse Flattening Test. Welded tubes only. One specimen from each 1500 ft (460 m) of finished tubing. Coiled tubing >1500 ft (460 m) (without circumferential butt welds) is sampled at both ends. Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Tests. Each tube to be tested. Exceptions. Tubing with wall thickness t<0.065 in (1.65 mm) may be tested using Rockwell superficial hardness or Vickers test. Tubes with inside diameter ID <1/4 in (6.4 mm) or t<0.020 in (0.51 mm) need not be hardness tested. Smaller tubes are tension tested only as for tube standard ASTM A 632 - 90 (see page 3-43). Lot Sizes. A lot is all tubes of same size from same heat of steel and same heat treatment. For tubes heat treated by continuous process a lot is up to 125 lengths for ODs <1 in

Optional Tests and Supplementary Requirements

Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Testing. Final Heat Treatment at under 1900F (1040C) may be specified for special service characteristics. S1 Stress-Relieved Annealed Tubes. Tubes in grades TP304L, TP316L, TP321, TP347 and TP348 may be specified in this condition to improve stress corrosion resistance. Heat treat at 1550 F (845 C) to 1650 F (900 C) after roll straightening. Cool in air or by slow cooling. No further mechanical straightening is permitted. Tube straightness is as agreed with purchaser. S1 Air Underwater Pressure Test. Tube tested to 150 psi (1034 kPa) minimum underwater. S1 Stabilisation Heat Treatment. Tubes in grades TP321, TP347 and TP348 may be given this treatment using a temperature lower than that used for initial solution annealing heat treatment, as agreed with purchaser. S1 Intergranular Corrosion Test, in accordance with Practice A262 Practice E. If this test is specified, S3 may be required to achieve a pass.
