Chapter 4 How To Catch A Witch

This chapter is all about the trials and focuses mainly on Rebecca Nurse, Dorcas Good, and Briefly on Sarah Good , and Sarah Cloyse.

The story of Rebecca Nurses trial is that she was very loyal to God, but the afflicted continued to cry out her name. She has said I can say before my eternal Father I am innocent, and God will prove my innocence. Later in her examination she was arrested. At the next church service Rev. Parris read John 6, 70: Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil. Sarah Cloyse (Rebecca Nurses sister) Got out of her seat and left the meeting house. On her way out she slammed the door shut on April 3rd. She was, the next day, accused.

Dorcas Good was the 5- year old daughter of Sarah Good. She claimed that there was a snake (the devil) that sucked her blood at the lowest joint of her finger, and indeed there was a deep red spot umong her forefinger. Dorcas Good was arrested, and her confession confirmed the improsionment of her mother, Sarah Good.

John, Parris slave, had accused Goody Procter of hurting him. She had said, I take God in heaven to be my witness that I lnow nothing of it, no more than the child unborn. Her

husband, John Procter, was accused of beating Mary Warren out of her fits, and threatening to drown or kill her if she countinued to throw them. Marry Warren threw fits on and on again, but she was soon accused of being an afflicter. She threw fits and cried out I will tell! I will tell! and soon she was brought back to prison.

This source is one of the most important contributions to my project because it is the most descriptive and informative. This will be found in almost every page because of its detailed information on most of my websites topics. - - -. Witchcraft at Salem. Witchcraft at Salem. New York: George Braziller, 1969. 64-66. Print. This section is about Bridget Bishop and Samuel Shattuck. Bridget Bishop had records of being accused but had never been sent to jail or put to death. But she soon became a suspect for the trials of 1692 when she was found of using voodoo. Samuel Shattuck, the local dryer, when she had brought him for drying Sundry pieces of lace, some which were so short i could not see them for any use. by this he meant that the lace was too small to be warn by a human, but not for a voodoo doll, which is often dressed like that of the victim. One of Shattucks children had become ill and thrown fits so for him to stop, he brought the child to go scratch Bishops face. But Goodwife Bishop didnt fall for that, instead she scratched the boys face, and ever since he has been involved in grievous fits and will never recover. I will use this information in my project to show that some were indeed practicing witchcraft, and this is to allow viewers to acknowledge what happened.

Mercy Lewis was 19 when she was afflicted. She accused Giles Corey Bridget Bishop and many more. She was born in Maine where her family was killed by an Indian attack. Orphaned, she was sent to live with Thomas Putnam. She has played a large role in these trials accusing many causing their death. <http://ezinearticles.com/?So,-You-Want-to-Know-About-the-Salem-Witch-Trials--Part-Five---How-it-Ended-and-Bibiliography&id=2491360>. On October 12, 1692, the Massachusetts General Court held a meeting to figure out what to do about the situation They decided to band the imprisonment and execution of witchcraft. After four months all of the 150 accused were released. On December 17 1711 the families of those killled were given money. Betty Parris died at the age of thirteen in 1696. Ann Putnams parents died and Ann was left to take care of her family. She later wrote an apology, I justly fear I have been instrumental, with others, though ignorantly and unwittingly, to bring upon myself and this land the guilt of innocent blood...As I was a chief instrument of accusing Goodwife Nurse and her two sisters, I desire to lie in the dust, and to be humbled for it. I will use this information in my website for the Aftermath tab. Linder, Douglas. The Witchcraft Trials in Salem: A Commentary. www.law2.umkc.edu. N.p., Sept. 2009. Web. 17 Oct. 2011. <http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/salem/ SAL_ACCT.HTM>. Betty Parris and some friends became strangely ill and acted very unusual. People soon believed that the girls were being tormented by witches, and the accused were Tituba ( the Parris slave) Sara Osborn (was old and hadnt attended church), and Sara Good. The girls and other local people would continue to make accusations about people tormenting the girls. Later on the witch hunt was over and many were accused in the process and killed. In my project this information can be used in the revolution reaction and reform tab because it is pure information about most everything in the trials. Linder, Douglas O. Ann Putnam. www.umkc.edu. she was the oldest child of Thomas and Ann Putnam Sr. Ann Putnam Jr. was a smart normal child until the outbreak of witchcraft struck. Two servants in the Putnam household, Mercy and Mary, both the age of 17, were both afflicted as well as Ann. Then and 6 others have listened to Tituba. They all started to throw strange fits. After Betty Parris was sent away Ann claimed to be afflicted by 62 people. Later in 1706 she gave a sincere apology of her actions. This information can be used the revolution reaction and reform pages because its content shows the trials in Anns actions. - - -. This website is short but provides key information on the aftermath of the trials. 19 accused were hanged, 1 pressed to death and 13 plus died in prison. I will use this information in my project in the reaction and aftermath pages to show what the trials caused by the end of its horrifying epidemic. - - -. Tituba. www.umkc.edu. N.p., Sept. 2009. Web. 20 Oct. 2011. <http://law2.umkc.edu/ faculty/projects/ftrials/salem/ASA_TIT.HTM>. Tituba was an Indian who was brought to

Barbados to be bought off as a slave. Samuel Parris bought Tituba when she was 12-17 years of age, People believed that she showed Betty Parris of witchcraft when she was ill. This website provides information that can be used to illustrate what one person was thought to be able to do, as a witch. McCandlish, Kelly. Mary Walcot. www.virginia.edu. Ed. Bernard Rosenthal. Mary Walcott was eighteen during the trials. She wasnt the most notorious of the accusers but she played an even role with the rest. Marys mother died when she was young and her father remarried distantly relating them to the Putnam family. She was calm but she did cause a lot of trouble with the accused. In my website i can use this information to show that there were peaceful people in the trials but they still played a vicious role. Rebecca Nurse. umkc.edu. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Nov. 2011. <http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/ projects/ftrials/salem/SAL_BNUR.HTM>. Rebecca Nurse was 71 when she was accused. She had written, This venerable lady, whose conversation and bearing were so truly saint-like, was an invalid of extremely delicate condition and appearance, the mother of a large family, embracing sons, daughters, grandchildren, and one or more great-grand children. She was a woman of piety, and simplicity of heart. Thirty-nine signed a petition on Nurses behalf. Nurse had also said, I have got nobody to look to but God. Rebecca Nurse was Not Guilty until all of the afflicted cried out in pain. She was executed on July 19.

This information is very important because it displays that no matter how innocent any one person is there was no safety. Salem. nationalgeographic.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Nov. 2011. <http://www.nationalgeographic.com/salem/>. This creates a short summary of the trials and gives an overview of the trials. I can use this in my project as a sort of base to build of of because of its general overview. Snyder, Heather. Giles Corey. Virginia.edu. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2011. <http://www2.iath.virginia.edu/salem/people/gilescorey.html>. Giles Corey was born in England in 1611. He was in his eightys when he was accused. He was one of the six men to be executed, but he was pressed to death under a pile of stones because he refused to be on trial. In 1675, Corey killed a farm worker named Jacob Goodale. He was found guilty of the murder and ordered to pay a large fine. His third wife Martha was arrested for witchcraft during the trials. the next month Giles Corey was accused and arrested. On September 18 he was pressed to death, and he said more weight. symbolizing that not even imminent death could convince him to go to trial. I will use this in my project to show that some refused to go to trial because they knew they were innocent, and while undergoing death, they kept their right. Sutter, Tim. Salem Witchcraft: The Events and Causes of the Salem Witch Trials. www.salemwitchtrials.com. N.p., 2003. Web. 19 Oct. 2011. <http://www.salemwitchtrials.com/salemwitchcraft.html>. Tituba was accused of making a witch cake witch is supposed to show if the afflicted is a witch. Soon after that Tituba was a main accusation for the witch hunt as well as Sara Osborn and Sara Good. The girls

show signs of being tormented by the three women. And soon Tituba confessed of being a witch, while the other two claimed their innocence. After this the witch hunt began and many were accused and many were killed. In my project i can use this because it supplies me with general information on my topic but its very detailed. Walsh, Sarah Nell. Elizebeth Parris. www.virginia.edu. N.p., Spring 2001. Web. 18 Oct. 2011. <http://www2.iath.virginia.edu/saxon-salem/servlet/SaxonServlet?source=salem/texts/ bios.xml&style=salem/xsl/dynaxml.xsl&chunk.id=b10&clear-stylesheet-cache=yes>. Betty Parris ans some friends were interested to know their future so they tried Venus glass. When they saw the shape of a coffin, Re. Samuel Parris reported it to the council. Soon the girls acted strange ans threw fits , and may people were accused. They complained of being tortured. Soon Bettys mom was worried about her health so she sent Betty to live with distant relatives. As Betty grew up she married d and had a family of her own. I can use this for the aftermath page because this article is partly about what happened to Betty Parris after the trials. Yost, Melissa M. Abigail Williams. www.virginia.edu. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Nov. 2011. <http://www2.iath.virginia.edu/saxon-salem/servlet/SaxonServlet?source=salem/texts/ bios.xml&style=salem/xsl/dynaxml.xsl&chunk.id=b33&clear-stylesheet-cache=yes>. In 1962, Abigail Williams was around the age of 11 or 12, and she lived in the Parris household. As of now many believe in Abigail Williams and some of her friends meeting in a circle practicing voodoo and fortune telling with the Parris Indian slave, Tituba. The girls were most interested in knowing the occupation of their future husbands. Around the

time in 1692 in mid-January, Abigail and her cousin Betty Parris were experiencing strange illnesses. A neighboring doctor was called and he had said that, were bitten and pinched by invisible agents; their arms, necks and backs turned this way and that way and returned back again so as it was impossible for them to do of themselves and beyond the power of any Epileptic Fits or natural Disease to effects. Soon there was talk of witchcraft. The trial began and soon came to an end with many accused and many executed. I can use this information in my website because it tells a lot about one of the main contributors of the trials and what happened on her part.
