SUBSTRATE / SURFACE DESCRIPTION White plaster is the main ingredient in paperfaced plasterboard, set plaster, fibrous plaster and other similar materials. They are generally used for interior ceilings and walls. MOST COMMON PAPERFACED PLASTERBOARD Paperfaced plasterboard is set plaster sandwiched between cardboard faces. The edges are recessed to allow the joints to be flushed with cornice cement or plaster compound. Paperfaced plasterboard should be flat and smooth on jointed areas, free of dust and have undamaged paper surfaces. Ensure paper has not been scuffed by sanding at jointed areas. Poor flushing of the joints or inadequate priming will cause visual "banding" when painted. Ensure a high quality of levelling and sufficient priming to unify surface porosity. Ensure water resistant grades have been used in areas where steam, condensation or moisture may occur. FIBROUS PLASTER, SET PLASTER Fibrous or set plaster should be inspected for fine surface cracks, uneven trowelling, large cracks & air bubbles. The surface should also be examined for excessive moisture around jointing & scrimmed areas, powdery or weak and "drummy" surface layers and areas of porosity differences and areas contaminated with oily release agents. Jointed areas using added lime should be checked for alkalinity. WATER RESISTANT PLASTERBOARD A paperfaced plasterboard which has been treated with a waterproofing material LEAST COMMON FYRELINE PLASTERBOARD A fire retardant grade of plasterboard. PLASTERGLASS A smooth, white cast plaster with glass fibre reinforcement used mainly for ceilings in Western Australia

PPL008 New PLASTER PRODUCTS REPAIR SURFACE IMPEFECTIONS Fill cracks and surface imperfections with patching plaster or a suitable filler. Any gaps resulting from structural movement should be filled with a flexible gap sealant. SAND Sandpaper smooth. CLEAN Ensure surface is clean and free from dust. Dust off thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove loosely adhering jointing compound or cornice cement. Nb: Fibrous plaster and set plaster must be sealed with a solvent based pigmented sealer. Repaint ASSESS SUITABILITY Inspect to determine the degree of deterioration of existing coatings. Check coating adhesion using the cross-hatch test. CLEAN SURFACE Clean to remove all dirt, dust and all other surface contaminants by using a suitable cleaning agent and rinsing / water blasting clean with water. Treat mould with a suitable mould treatment and rinse clean. REPAIR SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS Prepare all areas that have poor adhesion, are cracking, peeling and flaking by sanding, power sanding, scraping, wire brushing or burning off as appropriate. Feather edges of the surrounding sound paint to completely remove visual ridges and wash / dust off to remove debris. Any major design faults leading to structural failure must be corrected prior to repainting. SANDING Sand the entire cleaned substrate to an even flat gloss level to provide a smooth, even surface and to provide a good key for the new coating system to adhere to. PRIME Prime any bare areas with a suitable primer. Nb: Fibrous plaster and set plaster must be sealed with a solvent based pigmented sealer.
