ISO 14001 / R2 Overview

This presentation gives a general overview of the concepts and requirements of the: ISO 14001: 2004 Environmental management systems -Requirements with guidance for use AND R2: October 30, 2008 Responsible Recycling Practices (R2)

ISO 14001 & R2 - General

ISO 14001 and the R2 are both a set of general requirements that establish a Management System. A Management System is an established way that a company conducts its business operations to ensure compliance to the various requirements.
ISO 14001 sets forth the requirements for ensuring sound environmental practices within the business. R2 sets forth the practices for ensuring sound environmental, health and safety practices of the business relevant to electronics recycling.

ISO - General
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees (ISO/TC). Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

ISO 14001 - General

ISO 14001 specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organization to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal requirements and information about significant environmental aspects. It is intended to apply to all types and sizes of organization and to accommodate diverse geographical, cultural and social conditions. A system of this kind enables an organization to develop an environmental policy, establish objectives and processes to achieve the policy commitments, take action as needed to improve its performance and demonstrate the conformity of the system to the requirements of ISO 14001. The overall aim of ISO 14001 is to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs.

R2 - General
The R2 sets forth responsible recycling (R2) practices for use in accredited certification programs that assess electronics recyclers environmental, health and safety, and security practices. It provides a simple means of verifying that an electronics recycling company is forthright and responsible about how it manages used and end-of-life electronic equipment. Additionally, it provides electronics recyclers a means of highlighting their values and performance to customers. The purpose of R2 is to develop a commonly accepted set of practices for the electronics recycling industry.

The Process Acquiring the Basic Information

(Video Session II)

The Process
1. Determine how the company currently operates.

2. Collect current policies, procedures, forms, etc.

3. Develop Initial Draft reflecting current operations and requirements.

4. Determine implementation and Roll Out

5. Develop FM Management Plan and AIVRM 6. Conduct Review / Revision of system 7. Develop Revised Draft 8. Conduct Final Review / Revision of system

9. Conduct Audit and Review

10. Proceed toward Certification with Certification Body
