EDCNRP - Development in meat consumption

From Statistics Explained

=> Environmental Data Centre on Natural Resouces and Products (EDCNRP)

This indicator shows meat (bovine, pork and poultry) consumption trends and is relevant to environmental issues as meat products have generally high negative environmental impacts.

Development in meat, milk and dairy products consumption

The environmental impacts of development of different meat and diary products differ across different types of meats, diaries, for instance a switch from beef to chicken or pork will lead to reduced environmental impacts. Data on this indicator is extracted from FAOSTAT Food Balance Sheets (FAOSTAT FBS). The name Food Balance Sheet (FBS) refers to the balance accounts in each country between supply of a particular commodity, production, imports and exports, and stock changes, and uses, food, waste, food manufacture, and other uses. In Table 1, supply of different types of meats, milk and dairy products in the EU and within the time period 2000-2007 is shown.

In each year period, the supply of 'pig meat' accounted for the highest EU meat supply per capita. The next type of meat, in order of its supply, for the EU as a whole is 'bovine meat'. In Figure 1, the percentage shrares of different types of meats from the total per-capita meat supply in the year 2007 are depicted.

The dynamics of the EU supply (kg/capita/year) of 'Bovine meat' for the time period year 2000-2007 are shown in Figure 2. As illustrated in the figure, the Bovine meat supply per-capita in the EU was fluctuating in this time period, dropped by 2.7% in 2001, however, increased by 2.3% in 2007 with respect to yaer 2000.
