I'm used to dealing with dogs. Afew
weeks ago I delivered a package to a
new house. and was greeted by a
very friendly dog that wagged his tail
and couldn't wait to be pet.
Aweek later I stopped by the same
house to deliver another package.
However, this time the dog came run-
ning out barking and growling at me.
I tossed him a few dog biscuits, but it
didn't seem to work. Finally the
homeowner came out to rescue me.
"What happened?" I asked. "Why
doesn't your dog like me anymore?"
"I don't know," the man replied.
"But it could be because last week
you delivered his shock collar!"

drools, keep an eye out for abnormal
amounts. If your dog begins to drool
excessively, it could be sign that
something is wrong. Problems with
their teeth are the largest cause,
including a chipped tooth or infected
gums. Dietary problems, poisoning or
certain diseases may also cause exces-
sive drooling. For you and your dog's
safety, have a professional veterinari-
an check out any unusual drooling
behavior.
Jingle Bells
Most people are acquainted with the
famous experiment of Pavlov's dogs.
His groundbreaking work in the area
of Physiology demonstrated that there
was a connection between the envi-
ronment and how our body reacts. In
a series of experiments, he struck a
bell every time his dogs were fed.
Over time, the dogs learned to associ-
ate the sound of the bell with food.
After a while, the mere ringing was
enough to cause the dogs to drool at
the anticipation of a meal. This exper-
iment, along with numerous other
findings, paved the way for behavioral
sciences and resulted in Pavlov's
Nobel Prize in 1904.

Dear Classified Guys,
Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted
a puppy named Charlie. So when my
husband and I bought our first home,
I decided it was time. I carefully
researched every detail to find the
breed that I thought would be per-
fect. Believe it or not, I decided on a
Bullmastiff. Despite their potentially
large size, I was drawn in by their
gentle nature. I found a litter of pup-
pies advertised in the classifieds and
picked the cutest of the bunch.
Charlie's adorable and I love him,
with one exception. He drools a lot!
Despite all my research, I never
thought about it. I know all dogs
drool, but this guy takes the prize. If
he brushes up against you, you need
to change your pants. And if I hold a
dog biscuit in front of him, I need
to mop up the puddle he
creates. He's like one of
the family now, but I could
use a solution to control
his drooling. Can you help?

Cash: I can only imagine that when
Charlie shakes his head, you need a rain-
coat.
Carry: We are happy to hear that you
took time to research breeds before you
chose a dog. That's a very responsible act
that everyone should do, especially before
giving a dog as a gift for the holidays.
Cash: In your case, it was particularly
important. If you were not prepared for
the enormous size of a Bullmastiff, you
might have had one "big" problem on
your hands. Although they average
around 130 pounds, we personally know
some that top over 180 pounds. That's a
big dog!
Carry: And like you've discovered,
Bullmastiffs are also known for drooling
quite a bit. This is due to the excess skin
they have around their mouth that col-
lects the saliva.
Cash: Since it's part of Charlie's
nature, there isn't much that will prevent
him from drooling, but you can help con-
trol it.
Carry: For starters, keep a few small
towels handy throughout your home.
When dogs play or get excited, they tend
to drool more. Aquick wipe of Charlie's
jowls may keep you from having to
change your clothes.
Cash: Most importantly, change how
you handle feeding your dog. If holding
a biscuit causes him to drool, avoid treat-
ing him in that manner. Instead, put the
treat in his food dish with little warning
so drooling is kept to a minimum.
Carry: With a little effort on training
him around food, you just might keep
from needing that raincoat!

It may not snow often in southern Kentucky, but when it does the whole family heads outside to enjoy some
frosty fun. Whether youre building a snowman, making snow angels or catching flakes on your tongue, get
ready to explore a winter wonderland one snowflake at a time!
Have you ever wondered A Why are all snowflakes different?
A How many different types of snowflakes are there?
A How are snowflakes formed?
You may have heard that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. That isnt totally true, although the c hance of finding twin snowflakes
is very, very unlikely. Scientists estimate the chances of two snowflakes being exactly alike are ab out 1 in 1 million trillion (thats a 1
followed by 18 zeros). Meteorologists think that there are 1 trillion, trillion, trillion (a 1 with 36 zeros!) different types of snowflakes.
A snowflake has three basic ingredients: ice crystals, water vapor and dust. The ice crystals for m as water vapor freezes on a bit of
microscopic dust. The dust particles can come from many different places, including flower pollen, v olcanic ash and even celestial
bodies such as meteors.
Snow forms in very cold clouds containing water droplets and ice crystals. As water droplets atta ch themselves to ice crystals, they
freeze, creating an even larger ice crystal. In any crystal, little bits line up in a pattern. In ic e crystals, water molecules line up and form
a six-sided shape called a hexagon. This is why all snowflakes are six-sided.
The temperature of the cloud it forms in determines the shape of an ice crystal. The amount of mo isture in the cloud determines the
size of the ice crystal. More moisture will create a bigger crystal. When several ice crystals stick together, they form a snowflake.
As snowflakes tumble through the air, swirling and spiraling, they each take a different path to the ground. Each snowflake falls and
floats through clouds with different temperatures and moisture levels, which shapes each snowflake i n a unique way. Even though two
snowflakes may form in the same cloud, their different journeys to the ground will affect their shap e and size, giving each snowflake its
own unique identity.

Snowflakes in a Jar - Try i t out!
No need to wait for the first snowfall to explore the world of ice crystals. You can grow your ow n
crystallized snowflake inside a jar!
If you look at a snowflake under a microscope you can see the various patterns of the ice crystal s
which make up the snowflake. You can make your own ice crystals at home, and you dont have to wait
until its frosty and cold outside. This cool experiment can be done any time of the year.
Things Youll Need:
White pipe cleaners
Scissors
String
Pencil
Borax
Boiling water
Wide mouthed jar
A measuring tablespoon
Optional: food coloring
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cut the pipe cleaner into 3 equal pieces.
2. Twist together the 3 pieces of the pipe cleaner to form a snowflake.
3. Tie the string to one point of one of the pipe cleaners and then continue tying
the string to the other points to form a pattern for your snowflake.
4. Using another piece of string, tie one end to the middle of the pencil. Tie the
other end of the string to the top of one of the pipe cleaners.
5. Using boiling water, fill the jar about 1/2 full of water. Add Borax to the water.
Use 1 tablespoon of Borax per 1 cup of water. Stir to dissolve. If some settles to
the bottom thats okay.
6. Add food coloring now, if you choose to tint your snowflake.
7. Holding the snowflake by the pencil, put the snowflake into the borax filled
water. Rest the pencil on the opening of the jar letting the snowflake dangle in
the water.
8. Let the snowflake sit overnight and in the morning, you will see crystals
forming on the snowflake.
9. Leave the snowflake in the solution for several days to see how many more
crystals form.
