Theoretical Framework

The Neuman`s System Model served as a theoretical Ioundation to this study.

(Alligood,MR,200), For Neuman, the model describes a person as a complete system. As a
complete system, he interacts with his environment. There are some elements considered Ior the
person to maintain. First was the core energy. In this, he has Iield oI energy to protect him
where constant energy exchange occurs between a person and environment.

Within the core, a person is protected by lines oI resistance, which are considered as
deIenses activated by the person when Iacing stress. These normal lines oI deIense maintain the
level oI wellness oI a person and protect them Irom stressors. When the stressor penetrates the
Ilexible and normal lines oI deIense and lines oI resistance are activated, energy depletion and
system instability occurs.

However iI a nurse is sleep deprived, her lines oI deIense weakens. ThereIore she can`t
handle stressors eIIectively, which eventually aIIects her psychomotor perIormance. Because oI
the working hours and the irregularity oI sleep, nurses may experience sleep deprivation. A
sleep deprived person may have poor job perIormance and reduced productivity. Thus, sleep
deprivation have shown a signiIicant impact regarding medical errors.

Aside Irom the psychomotor, there are also changes in physiological and psychological
aspects oI nurses. Changes in appearance may be experienced as an eIIect oI sleep deprivation.
Sleep is under physiologic needs and iI enough sleep is not met, homeostasis and normal body
Iunctioning might be aIIected. On the other hand, psychological aspects are also compromised
because their concentration is highly aIIected upon experiencing sleep deprivation. At the point,
brain Iunctioning and alertness is decreased resulting to lesser concentration during duty hours.
And since concentration is aIIected by sleep deprivation, it is also expected that changes in
social interaction will occur.
