Weekly Advent Review: The Advent wreath means coming a special holiday in which we are looking forward to at Christmas. Many people looked for the coming of Jesus thousands of years ago. The wreath points upward to heaven. That is something to look forward to in expectation. In the meantime, as the green of the wreath represents growth, we are to grow as Christians here on earth by praying, reading our bible, and exhibiting the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Last Sunday was about the shepherds who shared the message of hope of the birth of the Christ child. The angels had appeared to them while they were watching their flock by night

in the field. Although they were terrified, the angel gave them words of peace.

Say: Hi Kids, this is Donte. He is helping us with the lesson today. Make him feel welcome. Can you tell Donte hello? Donte, can you tell us anything about angels? Donte: Little children have a guardian angel. Teacher: Isnt that wonderful, Donte! In the book of Matthew chapter 18 in verses 10-11, the Bible says: Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Gods angels are watching all the time to protect and keep us from harm. When we go to sleep at night, our guardian angel is watching over us all night long in case we need them for some reason. When we drive in a car or ride on a bus, our guardian angel is available to us. They work to protect us and keep us safe. Donte: Angels are stronger than prison bars. Teacher: You are right, Donte. In Acts we read about how the angel let Paul and Silas out of jail. Listen to this: But an angel of

the Lord during the night opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, Go your way, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life." (Acts 5:19-20)

Angels do whatever God commands them to do, and here it was to release Paul and Silas from jail. God gives angels jobs or assignments to do, and sometimes it may be about us. Donte: Angels never have to die. Teacher: How did you know that?
Rev. Jeanne McIntosh December 2011 All rights reserved.

Donte: From the book of Luke. Teacher: Lets read about that from the Bible. (Open bible) But

those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage; for neither can they die any more, for they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." (Luke 20:35-36)
Hmmm! This is interesting! Here on earth, when we get old or real sick, we may pass away and go to be with Jesus that is if we have our sins forgiven. However, according to the Bible, an angel will never die. I doubt they get sick either. They never get to marry and have a large wedding with bridesmaids and grooms and a big wedding cake. They are forever busy working for God in heaven and on earth. Donte: Angels are policemen. Teacher: Are you sure about that. I have never seen an angel carry a pistol or shotgun have you? I know in the bible they patrol all over the earth to see what is happening and report it to God in heaven. Listen to this verse: .These are those whom the Lord has

sent to patrol the earth. So they answered the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, and said, We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is peaceful and quiet."
(Zechariah 1:10,11). That sounds like angels are watching to and fro the earth to make sure that everything is the way it should be for Gods people according to His will. They must patrol in church, around our neighborhoods and communities, and wherever we go shopping. They have a very busy job to do. We do not see them in all their workings; nevertheless, they are there. Donte: Angels comfort us when we are afraid or sad.

Teacher: I can remember a place where that is true, Donte. Remember when after Jesus had been buried in the tomb and the women came to check on him at the tomb. Here is what the angels said to the women: "And the angel answered and said to the women,

Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying." (Matthew 28:5, 6) God sent
an angel to give them a message of hope. He knew they would be troubled and fearful about not finding their Lord Jesus, so he sent an angel to comfort them that day at the tomb. God created the angels and they all report to Him. They live forever, and help God with any task that he assigns to them. Donte: Angels announced Jesus birth. Teacher: You are right, they did. An angel appeared to Mary one day and told her that she was chosen from all women to be the mother of Baby Jesus. Mary did not know how this could happen because she had never been with a man in that way. She was not married, and knew that people would think she was a bad person having a baby. Back then, they had very strict rules, and if women had a baby if she was not married, she may be stoned to death. The angel told her that the Holy Spirit would put Baby Jesus inside her womb and that she was not to worry about anything. Donte: Wow! What happened next? Teacher: God sent another angel to talk to Joseph. When he found out that Mary was pregnant, he was concerned. He did not want to marry someone who had messed around. So one night while Joseph was sleeping, an angel came to him and told him what was really happening and that he was to go ahead and take Mary as his wife. Donte: Did Joseph do this?

Rev. Jeanne McIntosh December 2011 All rights reserved.

Teacher: Yes, he did take Mary as his wife. They both decided to have Baby Jesus as a married couple husband and wife. Joseph would be the earthly father and Mary would give birth to Baby Jesus. Mary was so happy. She went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who was also pregnant. When Elizabeth heard Mary greet her, the baby that was in her womb gave a happy jump. Can you imagine that? Babies can hear while they are inside the womb, that is why we must talk to them and play them some good music. We want them to be happy, too. Donte: Wow! This is all such good news! I hope the kids like this story today. I sure did! Teacher: We have so much to be thankful for this Christmas and every day of the year. God used the angels to bring Good News of Peace that was worth repeating by the shepherds. God has many things to share with us too, and used different means to do this. Here he used the angels to share about His Birth, but he gives us His Word (the Holy Bible), teachers, good friends, and pastors to share with us today. They help us understand the Bible and how to live that we may share good words with others. It is important what message we give to others message of love, kindness, mercy, peace, and sometimes sad. Donte: I like Good messages message of peace! Teacher: I do too, Donte. The angels message was good about Gods Son, Jesus - the greatest gift that we can ever receive. He gave his only Son, Baby Jesus to die on a cross for the sins of the whole world. He died to save us and take us to heaven someday when he returns or when we pass away. Praise God for his gift, Baby Jesus! I am so glad that you helped with the lesson today, Donte, Thank you! Do you want to tell the kids goodbye? Donte: Goodbye and merry Advent week three!

Advent Reading and Lighting of Candles Angel (Peace)

Teacher: The first candle we light stands for the coming of Jesus and His great love represented in the advent wreath. (Light a purple candle) Teacher: This second candle stands for the hope that we have in the Savor, Jesus Christ. Child 1: Hope is something that we have to look forward to, and that is only comes through Jesus. Child 2: God so loved the world.that He gave His only Son Jesus. Teacher: This second candle is lit to share that hope of his coming to the entire world. If we confess our sins, He will forgive us and give us life everlasting in Him. Let us be a witness of that Hope! (Light candle purple) Teacher: Today we celebrate the peace that the angels brought to the Shepherds. Child 1: Thank you, sending good news to the Shepherds. Teacher: We also celebrate the peace that you brought to Mary when she was with child. Child 2: Thank you, God for giving Mary peace in her heart and calming her fears. Light candle (Purple)

Memory Verse Games Create a Line Write one word of the verse on separate pieces of cut out angels. Have the kids practice the verse several times. Pass out the angels to all the kids. Have kids get in a correct line as quickly as possible. Musical Angels put an angel in all empty chairs with the exception of one less than the amount of children that are present in attendance. Play some music such as Angels We Have Heard in High. Play the verse only and stop the music. All kids must get walk around the chairs until the music stops and then pick up an angel. Whoever does not have an angel picks three other kids to sing the chorus of the song with them. Continue the game. Burst the Balloon Blow up about ten balloons and tape to a Christmas tree made from cardboard or use a fake tree. Before you blow up the balloons, place inside on a piece of paper the word angel. Do this for each balloon. Put all the kids names on a cut out angel and into a cup. Draw out one name at a time, and that child gets to burst the balloon. After they have burst the balloon, everyone says the verse. Do this for all ten balloons. Give the child their name on the angel cutout to keep and take home. They will like this. PEACE Message Think of a word for each letter of the word peace that would be a Good Message of Peace. Write these on the board as the kids share.

Drama Teacher: Mary a little girl in the 2nd grade class got in a serious car accident. Keala: She lives on my street. Teacher: Maybe you could take her the cards from our class that we make today. Keala: I would like that. We play together. Sometimes, she comes over to my house and we do our homework together. Teacher: It sounds like you are a good friend to her. Keala: We are. I think I will draw an angel on my card. Teacher: That would be nice. Angels have many jobs.
