The Salmo Ski Hill is busy preparing for the 2012 season with hill, lodge and lift maintenance. The highlight for January 2012 will be the celebration of 50 years of operation. The hours of volunteering to keep the Salmo Ski Hill operational are countless. The past and present volunteers, members and staffs commitment will be celebrated and honoured on January 21. The Salmo Ski Hill is seeking members for our volunteer Ski Patrol Program. Hours available include evenings Monday through Thursday and days on Saturday and Sunday. In exchange for volunteering, we offer a complimentary seasons pass. Either Occupational First Aid Level I or OFA Level III or equivalent is required. Harley came to us after his owner unfortunately passed away and the remaining family could not care for him. He is a purebred American Eskimo, with the white fur that comes along with the breed. He has been groomed in his life and I recommend continuing brushing him regularly, which fortunately he enjoys. Just go slow with him and he will melt into the brush for you. At the ripe old age of 11, Harley is doing well. He recently did have dental work in 2008, when his teeth were cleaned and infected teeth were removed. I would recommend that his new owners keep a close watch on his remaining teeth, to ensure he doesnt develop a new infection. The best type of home for Harley would be more on the quiet side, where time spent on his own would be limited. Perhaps a retired person or persons who have time at home, and would do well with a dog that doesnt need as
much time outside as a younger dog would require. With that being said, Harley is on the heavier side, so a proper diet and a couple of walks a day would help him lose the weight he needs to lose. Once he loses the weight, his joints will bother him less and he will breathe easier. At the moment, he does cough from physical exertion, but we feel that it is caused from his weight. He will require more trips to the vet as he ages, so a person or family who is financially able to provide that for him would be best An older dog can still be a great addition to your family, and Harley definitely still has a lot of love and friendship to give. If Harley sounds like a senior dog you would like to give a great retirement home to, please come to the Trail BCSPCA and meet him. Updated Resource Recovery Bylaw
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Board of Directors has adopted an updated Resource Recovery Bylaw. The bylaw, which will come into effect on Livestock January 1, 2012, replaces the old solid waste disposal bylaw CHRISTMAS RABBITS...Satin Angora, $100; New Zeaas the regulatory framework for resource recovery activities land Breeders, $30; bunnies, $20; package discounts. The update clarifies disposal policies and formalizes the RDCKs commitment to implementing best practices in waste management, many of which are already in place at local resource recovery facilities. RDCK representatives anticipate that adoption of the bylaw will reduce the environmental impact of resource recovery operations by strictly controlling the types of materials that are accepted for disposal. Highlights of the bylaw include: An expanded set of definitions which will provide site staff and the public with unambiguous information about what materials are accepted at RDCK facilities; A simplified user fee schedule which will be easier for site staff and the public to interpret; and Controlled waste and prohibited waste schedules which will regulate disposal of certain materials that are hazardous, difficult to manage, or accepted in recycling programs. The new bylaw reflects an aggressive approach to solid waste management, stated John Kettle, RDCK Board Chair. By establishing clearer and more comprehensive disposal regulations, the RDCK will be better able to achieve its resource recovery goals. Those goals include maintaining a high level of service to the public, promoting waste diver&DOO XV sion, and minimizing the impact of waste management activities on human and environmental health. 4-H Clubs Of Canada

For nearly 100 years the 4-H Clubs of Canada have played a vital roll in bringing national attention to the benefits of supporting local agriculture and what that does for our communities. There are about 26 thousand youth who participate in 4-H Clubs across our country. The province of British Columbia is host to clubs that focus on topics such as Field Crops, Honey Bees, Leathercraft, Small Engine, Poultry, Beef, Horses and many more. The 4-H Provincial Council, in partnership with the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, provides many programs and services for these clubs. They organize events and learning opportunities that range from understanding the ALR to animal husbandry, from farm and food safety to invasive plants, communications, and even seminars in Ottawa. Here in the Kootenay and Boundary Districts there are several 4-H Clubs: in Cranbrook, Creston, Nelson, Trail/ Castlegar, Grand Forks and Rock Creek. The Kootenay Cinch and Saddle 4-H Club (Horse) in the Trail and Castlegar area will celebrate its 12th year in 2012. Since their beginning they have been active members of the equestrian community and have been seen riding in local parades, performing drill team formations at riding club anniversaries and raising funds for the Childrens Wish Foundation. In addition to these activities they organize several events throughout the year includ-
ing Equestrian Youth Camps, Fun Clinics, Horse First Aid Classes and Equestrian Massage Workshops. Not only are they active locally; they travel, with and without their horses, to various equestrian events on an annual basis. ock Creek is host to the Regional Livestock Judging Competition where members test their knowledge of livestock confirmation. The Okanagan Stock Show held in Armstrong, is one of the years most anticipated events. Members from all over the Provincial Interior come together for nearly a week and partake in equestrian education and skill building challenges. This year the club also attended the Mane Event in Chilliwack, a three-day extravaganza of equestrian learning. All the members come from various backgrounds and communities throughout our area. Bi-monthly meetings are held in Robson and most clinics take place at the Trail Riding Grounds. Members also participate in activities at the Nelson Riding Grounds as well. On Thursday, January 12, 2012, between 6:30-8:30 pm, the Kootenay Cinch and Saddle Club will host their New Members Introductory Meeting in Robson at the elementary school. Ages 9-19 welcome! Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is pleased to announce the first communities participating in its new Community Directed Youth Funds (CDYF) program. CDYF aims to support services for youth ages 12 to 19 by providing each area with $100,000 over four years to increase activities, opportunities and services for youth. The program will be available to the remaining Basin communities over the next two years. We are very excited to be putting funds in the hands of communities to benefit youth in their specific regions, said Wayne Lundeberg, CBT, Director, Youth Initiatives. These first communities demonstrated a readiness to come together in a collaborative manner to set priorities, address issues in their regions and enhance activities and services for their youth. Six pilot communities and their surrounding areas that will begin the program this winter are: Revelstoke, Golden, New Denver/Silverton, Salmo/Ymir, Crawford Bay/ Riondel, and Montrose/Fruitvale/Beaver Valley.

Trans Connect, the education, resource, and referral network for Transgender/Gender Diverse people living in the East and West Kootenay, is pleased to announce the premier screening of its documentary Rural Transcapes. The film will be shown on Thursday, December 8, 7 pm, at SelfDesign High (420 Victoria Street) in Nelson and will be followed by a panel discussion. This topical film profiles four transgender individuals who have chosen to live in the rural area of the Kootenays. Christopher Moore is one of the people featured in the film and is the founder of the Trans Connect program, which has provided education to over 300 participants in 18 different communities as well as outreach services to Transgender/Gender Diverse Folks around the East and West Kootenay. Trans Connect, started 3 years ago, is a vital program, funded over the years by Columbia Basin Trust and the Vancouver Foundation, who also provided funding for the movie, as well as ongoing funding provided by ANKORS, the HIV/AIDS/and/or HCV support network. The office of Trans Connect is located in the heart of Nelson at 101 Baker Street and the coordinator, Christopher Moore, can be contacted at 250-354-5362. Amy Bohigian of Watershed Productions was asked by Christopher last year to create an educational tool and the result is this 30 minute film, which delves into difficult and inspiring stories of courage and authenticity. The film also features Dr. Chris Cochrane and Dr. Esta Porter, two medical professionals based in Nelson who work directly with the transgender community. At a time when Chaz Bono has made transgender a household word, let this event create a deeper appreciation of what it truly means for the folks featured in the film.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was proclaimed on December 10, 1948. Ordinary people have struggled to win the protection of human rights and it is ordinary people who must speak up when these rights are denied. On Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11, Nelson Amnesty International members invite you to join Amnesty International in marking this day of global action. Started by Amnesty members in Poland 8 years ago, the idea is powerful and simple. People write letters in their homes, schools, workplaces, places of worship and coffee shops. They join thousands of concerned individuals around the world on and around December 10, writing short, personal letters to help protect human rights, free prisoners of conscience, stop violence against women and make powerful changes in the lives of individuals. Bringing about a prisoners release or saving lives of victims of human rights abuses on the other side of the world has been accomplished, time and again, through the local efforts of Write-a-thon supporters. In Nelson this year, the Amnesty International Write-a-thon will be held at two venues on two consecutive days : The Nelson Municipal Library, 602 Stanley Street on Saturday, December 10 from 11 am to 3 pm; and the Oso Negro Cafe, 604 Ward Street on Sunday, December 11 from 10 am to 3 pm. There will be room set aside for people to gather and write letters, and all necessary information and writing materials will be provided.
